What's it all about?

"A/C - It doesn't have to be a problem" - In today's world of energy and health consciousness and with phrases such as "Legionella Bacteria" and "Sick Building Syndrome" cropping up in the press from time to time to give A/C a bad name you have to be careful that you make the right choice of system to match your budget for capital and ongoing maintenance expenditure, giving the best control and improvements possible to the workspace and providing lowest possible operating costs.

ECA - An incentive for Air-conditioning Systems - Can you ignore it?

The Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme was set up by the Government to entice businesses to use energy on new installed equipment wisely. We fully support this, whilst realising that we are selling yet another piece of equipment which uses more energy and which thus further burdens the country's energy production, we nonetheless prefer to do so as energy efficiently as we can, and inverter driven compressors are recognised as one of the best forms of energy saving device for air-conditioning equipment. Because this power saving means you will use less electricity than normal for the system, manufacturers using inverter technology in their units apply to have their equipment approved into the scheme, and if accepted into the register of equipment that meets the criteria in the Climate Change Levy brief, then the Government acknowledges this energy saving in the form of a tax credit against your end of year accounts.

The way it works is that we issue a certificate after installation, (to prove the technology). The rest is up to your accountant!

Air conditioning for cooling

In this example of an air conditioning split system which comprises an indoor and an outdoor unit, connected together by small copper tubing, in summer, the indoor unit extracts heat from the room and exhausts it via the outdoor unit through heat exchange coils and the principle of pumped refrigerant gas.

Air conditioning for heating

In winter, the reverse occurs. Natural heat, which is present in the outdoor air - even when it's cold is extracted and transferred indoors. Air conditioners that are able to heat and cool are known as heat pump systems. A heat pump system can be less expensive to run than traditional central heating.

The means to provide heat can take many different formats. We try to do so as energy efficiently as possible. These are a few types we can recommend and provide for you -

• heat pump-based over-door screen heaters - fan assisted w/ air (electric)
• balanced flue convector heaters - fan assisted warm air (gas)
• h/eff. unit heaters, high level - fan assisted warm air (gas)

• air-to-air, air-to-water and ground-to-water type heat pumps (electric)
