Hazardous Area Installation, Inspection & Maintenance

Hazardous Area Installation, Inspection & Maintenance

Inspection and maintenance of electrical equipment where an installation is situated in a "potentially explosive atmosphere" (hazardous area) demands knowledge relating to flammable gases, combustible dusts, vapours and of the various types of protection.

Our CompEx certified engineers, technicians and electricians have specialised expertise in "Hazardous Area" electrical installation, inspection and maintenance under the requirements of IEC 60079-14 and IEC 60079-17.

We understand that many companies do not have the necessary understanding or in-house expertise to ensure compliance with the following European Directives which address safety where there is a danger from potentially explosive materials:

94/9/EC (also known as ATEX 95) - Ensures that the quality of equipment, wherever  manufactured in the EU, meets essential safety requirements

1999/92/EC (also known as ATEX 137) - Ensures the health and safety of workers whilst in their place of work.

DSEAR (The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulation) - Transposes the requirements of ATEX 137 into UK law and incroporates parts of the EU Chemical Agents Directive.

Calibration and Repair

C&P can provide calibration and repair services both in our own calibration laboratory or at our customers' sites, ranging from process measuring instrumentation to oscilloscopes.

All our calibration is traceable to national standards via our UKAS certified working standards. C&P repair and refurbish most types of electrical / electronic devices, ranging from process / electrical measuring instruments to printed circuit boards and power supplies covering most manufacturing products.

Parameters include:
  • Temperature
  • Pressure
  • Level
  • Flow
  • Force
  • Frequency
  • pH
  • Voltage and much more...

Electrical Inspection and Testing

Electrical Inspection and Testing

Guidance Note 3 (Inspection & Testing - issued by the institution of Engineering and Technology) states that "Periodic inspection and testing is necessary because all electrical installations deteriorate due to a number of factors such as damage, wear, tear, corrosion, excessive electrical loading, ageing and environmental influences."

The Electricity at Work Act, 1989 states that all electrical systems and equipment used in the working environment should be maintained in a safe condition.

The Health & Safety Executive recommend that in order to comply with legislation a periodic inspection and testing programme should be undertaken at all places of work.

Licensing authorities, public bodies, insurance companies, mortgage lenders and others may also require periodic inspection and testing of electrical installation.

Our highly trained electricians and engineers are available to assist you in achieving compliance with your legal obligations as required in the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.

Our access control systems can be integrated into your existing security systems, enabling full control over who is entering, leaving and the safety and movement of people on your premises.

Portable Appliance Testing

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) ensures that all electrical appliances are safely maintained and suitable for the environment in which they are used. This involves periodic planned inspeciton and testing of portable appliances to meet all required standards and regulations. Failure to implement a program of regular appliance testing can lead to serious consequences, as well as affecting your insurance policies.

The IEE Code of Practice for In Service Inspection and Testing of Equipment sets out the standard to which each appliance is comprehensively tested. Our highly trained test technicians ensure that all testing and repairs are professionally carried out to the highest standards.

What does PAT involve?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) involves:

* A visual inspection to check the appliance casing and flex for wear or damage.
* Plugs are also checked for damage, loose cable connections, correct wiring and ensuring that the correct fuse rating is used.
* Once the equipment has passed a visual inspection it will undergo a series of electrical tests using a fully calibrated electrical PAT tester.
* A label will be attached to each appliance indicating the results (PASS/FAIL). Any item failing the tests will be easily identifiable and should be removed from service for repair or replacement.
* Detailed test results are generated and compiled for each electrical appliance and stored in our database.
* An appliance register and certificate including detailed test results are provided and should be retained for future reference.

Appliances that are found to be faulty will be appropriately labelled and brought to your attention. We will then recommend a course of action such as repair or replacement.
