The UK's leading pump specialist for difficult liquid handling applications since 1971
Michael Smith Engineers Ltd was formed in 1971 as a specialist pump distributor. We have our head office in Woking, a sales and support office near Leeds and a satellite sales operation in Essex, allowing us to provide service and support to customers throughout the United Kingdom. Our workshops in Woking are fully equipped for assembly, repair and testing of our pump ranges and we also offer on-site consultancy, trouble-shooting, commissioning and service. With an average length of service in the organisation of over 15 years, we can call on broad experience to solve your difficult applications and pumping problems. We have been accredited to ISO 9000 by NQA Ltd since 1994.
Michael Smith Engineers Ltd is managed by Sam Smith and Adrian Turner. The rest of the team includes John Tyson, Stephen Goodway, John Maslen, Stuart Wilgoss, Adrian Dawson and Mike Ryder in sales and support, Monica Wonham looks after our accounts, Jane Miles is running our website and providing IT support, Dick and Steve Alder man the workshops and Emma Jackman and Vanessa Higgins are responsible for order processing. The main markets we service with our ranges of pumps are the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and process sector with our larger pumps as well as laboratories, research and development institutions and OEMs with our smaller pumps. We only promote products for which we have been appointed as distributors and currently hold around £150,000 in stock of pumps and parts.
We tend to specialise in sealless leak-free products and offer ranges of magnetically driven gear pumps, magnetically driven centrifugal pumps (including metal, plastic and lined centrifugals), canned motor centrifugal pumps, peristaltic pumps, tubular diaphragm pumps, metering pumps, valveless piston pumps, turbine pumps, high pressure diaphragm pumps, vane pumps and barrel emptying pumps.
We can supply pumps in a wide choice of wetted materials for liquids between 0.2 cP and 500,000 cP, temperatures between -50° C and +400° C, capacities from nanolitres per hour to m3 per minute and can offer pumps for high system pressures up to 350 Bar and high discharge pressures up to 500 Bar. We are also able to pump liquids with up to 60% solid content, depending on the nature of the solids and the specific duty details. Self-priming pumps are available for suction lifts up to 7.5 metres. Depending on the duty requirements, we can offer pumps which have a low shear action or have a smooth flow or which can be run dry. Corrosion resistant materials are available for many of our ranges include metallic options of stainless steel and high nickel alloys or plastic options of PVC, polypropylene, PVDF and ETFE.
Michael Smith Engineers have experience of pumping many hard to handle liquids including acids, bases, organic liquids, solvents, inorganic liquids, slurries, volatile liquids, corrosives, abrasive liquids, non-lubricating liquids, liquids with entrained gases and flammable liquids. We are able to provide a wide range of drive options for the various ranges we represent including single phase and three phase motors, inverter control, DC motors, air motors, ATEX approved drives and manual and automatic variable speed units. As well as supplying a complete range of specialist pumps and drives, we also offer a comprehensive range of accessories including filters, relief and loading valves, flow meters and tubing to complement the different types of pumps.
What's New?
LEAK-FREE MAG-DRIVE PUMPS FOR HAZARDOUS LIQUIDS
When pumping applications involve corrosive, toxic, explosive and other hazardous liquids Dickow magnetically coupled centrifugal pumps are a safe, reliable and leak-free option. Available from pumping specialists Michael Smith Engineers, the Dickow range of pumps includes the KM Series, capable of handling capacities up to 65 m3/hr at heads up to 65 metres.
All KM Series pumps are magnetically coupled, so they are leak free by design as there are no mechanical seals. They are available in either horizontal or vertical configuration and a choice of wetted materials including cast iron, cast steel and stainless steel. The vertical configuration option with the motor mounted on the top eliminates the need for a baseplate so is an ideal choice for where space is limited.
These robust and reliable pumps can handle liquids with viscosities between 0.1 cp and 200 cp at temperatures between -30 to + 200 Deg C. Other features include a pump sleeve bearing made from silicone carbide which is very hard wearing and resistant to corrosion and so guarantees long periods between servicing.
Typical applications for Dickow KM Series pumps include tanker loading and unloading and transferring to and from bulk storage vessels. For example, in food or beverage processing, soap and cosmetics manufacturing, biofuels production, bulk chemical storage, or wherever there is a need for reliable, leak free pumping of larger volumes of hazadous liquids.
Useful Information
It is our intention to provide useful reference materials, to help clarify and inform our customers about some of the technical and practical issues that need to be considered when sourcing and installing pumps for liquids. This includes chemical resistance guides to help specify suitable wetted materials for the pump and fittings, guidelines on viscosities of common liquids, information on suction filter sizing and a simple guide explaining the different IP ingress protection ratings.
We have also explained how to select a suitable drum pump or barrel pump and have given some guidance on when to select a positive displacement pump and their installation and operation. We have also clarified why positive displacement pumps should be protected from over-pressure by installing relief valves.
Information is provided on how gear pumps can be used for metering and dosing as well as data on how Hydra-Cell multiple diaphragm pumps perform against the American Petroleum Institute standard reference API 675 for Positive Displacement Pumps - Controlled Volume. Click Here for More Information
Internal Gear Pumps & External Gear Pumps
Our ranges of internal gear pumps and external gear pumps cover capacities from microlitres per hour to 345 m3/hr. Maximum discharge pressures between 8.7 Bar and 150 Bar can be covered, depending on the duty required and the pumped liquid's characteristics. All our gear pumps give smooth pulse-less accurate positive displacement pumping over a wide range of temperatures and viscosities, from thin liquids to high viscosity liquids. With a choice of wetted materials and shaft sealing options, we are able to offer you the right gear pump for your application. Click Here for More
