Application Engineering for Orbital Welding Equipment

Require tooling to adapt a standard weld head to fit your application? If your application requires a completely new weld head we can help

IBW Weld Heads

The ability to complete a weld from the inside can very often provide the solution to a seemingly insurmountable problem. This can be achieved in a variety of ways using modified standard OD weld heads or dedicated internal bore welding (IBW) heads. Applications typically require torch assemblies that are taylored to suit the reach and diameter necessary to access the weld joint.

We have provided specialised equipment and application engineering for a number of IBW projects for the aerospace, power generation and nuclear industries.

Orbital Welding Equipment Controllers

Orbital Welding Equipment Controllers

Orbitec manufacture a selection of Orbital Welding Controllers, each model is designed to provide a unique solution depending on your budget and project requirements. The most popular over recent years has been our ´Tigtronic Orbital´ controller, specifically designed to work with a range of welding inverters providing a flexible system that combines both Orbital and manual TIG capability. This controller was the first on the market to provide operators with automatic parameter calculation:

  • Enter tube outside diameter
  • Enter wall thickness
  • Enter weld head code
  • Start

It could not be simpler!

Inverters

Orbitec offer a selection of Inverter based power supplies that can be used with all of our Orbital Welding Controllers, each model provides a practical option to suit your budget and project requirements providing a highly flexible combination of system options unique to Orbitec, all can be used for both Orbital TIG and manual TIG/MMA capability.

  • Tetrix 180 Inverter
  • Tetrix 301 Inverter
  • Tigtronic 160
  • Tigtronic 205
  • Tigtronic 205 Autorange
  • Manual Torches & Accessories
  • Water Coolers & Chillers
  • Mobile Workstations

    Mobile Workstations

Orbitec offers a selection of mobile solutions for your orbital equipment providing a practical, portable ‘workstation’ to house a complete system together with full size gas bottle, weld head bracket, cable hooks and other complementary accessories. All options combine to create a tidy, professional appearance particularly on site where the additional protection offered to the main equipment is also beneficial.

    Enclosed Weld Heads

Enclosed Weld Heads provide complete inert gas protection of the full weld bead circumference (an industry requirement for producing welded joints in electro-polished and hygienic applications). Collets are required for each tube diameter to be welded.

‘Fusion’ applications only, filler wire cannot be used with these heads. Welding will be made after preparation of the tube ends to provide a flat, square face. During welding the weld head remains static, only the rotor carrying the electrode rotates in an ‘orbital’ motion around the tube.

Our range of OSK weld heads are unique in design, the cable and handle/motor assembly is separate from the weld head itself, so one handle assembly can run a variety of different sized weld heads. This concept provides significant cost savings on multiple weld head systems and unmatched flexibility using the same weld heads on different manufacturers´ power supplies.

    Open Frame Weld Heads

The open frame weld head locates one side of the weld joint. During welding a gas or water cooled torch and cable assembly rotates around the tube or pipe.

Some advantages of open frame weld heads:

    • Robust construction
    • Ease of handling
    • Option to add wire feed
    • No ‘size specific’ collets required, each weld head will accommodate its full tube/pipe OD size range as supplied
    • 90° Tilting Torch Bracket option available

Two versions of open frame weld heads are available: OSW and OSZ depending on the tube or pipe size to be welded, they can be used for fusion welding or for wire feed applications when used in conjunction with an external wire feeder.

    Wire Feed Units

Orbitec offer a choice of 2 external wire feed units depending on your preferred spool size. Both units can be used with the OSW and OSZ range of open frame weld heads and the Turn 300 and TT115 Turn Table systems.

The normal wire size for Orbital welding is 0.8mm dia. and precision layer wound is preferred over random wound.

    Tube to Tubesheet

Orbitec have a selection of weld head options for tube to tubesheet applications, the choice is dependant on whether your application requires wire feed or is fusion only. The following weld head models are available:

With wire feed: RBK16, RBK20,       Fusion only: OSK4TK,

    Turn Table Systems

Orbitec manufacture two turntable options for use with the Tigtronic Basic, Orbital and Integral Controllers. The Turn 300 which is a dedicated turn table system, TT-115 which converts the OSW115 open frame weld head into a turntable, a slection of Accessories and upgrades are also available.

    Tube Squaring Systems

Orbitec manufacture 2 systems for facing tube ends, the Planfix HP40 for diameters from 3mm to 40mm OD, and the Planfix 115 for 8mm to 115mm OD. We also offer a selection of accessories and hand tools to compliment the range.

Tube squaring is essential for preparing the tube end where the original cut has been made by means other than an orbital tube saw, such as a tube cutter, hacksaw, bandsaw or grinder. Square cuts can be made using cutting blocks and a hacksaw, but these too should be finished with a tube squarer.

    Orbital Cutting Saw

Orbitec manufacture a robust and easy to use orbital cutting saw, the ORS121 Portable Cutting Saw is capable of accomodating diameters from 5mm to 121mm OD. Accessories include the Tripod stand which provides a stable platform for safe and efficient operation and a choice of blades are available to suit the thickness and material to be cut.

    Cutting Blocks

Orbitec supply a range of cutting blocks for cutting into pipework where power tools cannot be used. The cutting blocks are made from hardened steel and privide a guide for tube cutting with a hacksaw, the resultant cut can be suitable for orbital welding after minimal deburring and cleaning. However, facing of the tube end with a suitable tube squarer is always recommended for ensuring a high quality orbital weld.

    Features:

    • Quick lock system
    • Easy to use
    • Flexible use on site

    Oxygen Analysers

Precise purging is essential for controlling weld quality, particularly when welding high-alloy, corrosion-resistant materials that are highly sensitive to oxygen in the welding process.

Our oxygen analysers can be connected to the Tigtronic Orbital and Integral Controllers for monitoring ID Purge quality as part of the programmed weld schedule parameters, values measured during welding will also be recorded as part of the weld data recording facility.

The maximum oxygen value (in ppm) is entered in the controller (typically 20-30ppm). Welding will not commence until the measured value drops below the programmed threshold. Since oxidation starts at around 30ppm analysers with values displayed as a percentage are not recommended (i.e. 0.1% = 1,000ppm).

Orbitec manufacture 2 models of oxygen analysers, the Oxy-2 and the Oxy-Integral with a selection of accessories and consumables.
