A contactor is used to switch and control high power in electrical circuits (typically 9 amps and above). Unlike relays, contactors are normally connected directly to the load (current carrying) circuit. Downlights (or down lighters) are one of the most modern and attractive types of lighting. With thousands of different downlights to choose from, Downlights Direct has the most comprehensive range available. When choosing downlights, make sure you consider the legal requirements (if any) for example; before choosing your downlights we recommend you refer to the Building Regulations. Different Regulations will apply depending on what type of property they are being installed in. For instance; a residential dwelling is different to a commercial building. To be totally sure that you comply with the Building Regulations we recommend our latest range of downlights; EvoLED downlights. Evo LED downlights comply with Parts B,C,E, L and P of the Building Regulations and are suitable for commercial and residential use.

In terms of energy efficiency; downlights are generally not energy efficient. In almost all cases you will have to install numerous downlights to replace a single lighting fixture. For example; replacing a single light fitting with ten 50W halogen downlights would consume 500W instead of 100W and although the lighting effect would be superior there would be an increased cost on your energy bills. There is an alternative option; low energy downlights. LED lamps or CFL’s (compact fluorescent lamps)are now available that can replace halogen. Most LED and CFL lamps can be retrofitted into existing downlights. Some LED and CFL lamps are deeper such as the 11W GU10 or Philips Master LED bulb and require the use of a deeper downlight known as a CFL downlight. Complete LED downlights such as EvoLED or Kosnic are also available, they come with a downlight trim, LED module and LED driver. Less power goes in and more light comes out!

Low energy downlights such as LED or CFL will save you 80 - 90% of energy and reduce your electricity bills while lasting twenty to fifty times longer than halogen. With recent advances in LED technology, power LED downlights and LED retrofit lamps are now available that out perform halogen and CFL in every way. Power LEDs provide a crisp, bright, white light and are instant startup unlike CFL which takes time to warm up. Dimmable LED downlights are also available either by using a 7W Philips Master MR16 LED bulb and a fire rated low energy downlight or our new 1x10W LED downlights which are supplied with a dimmable LED driver.

LED downlights are the most advanced type of downlight available, they out perform halogen and compact fluorescent (CFL) in every way. The main advantages of using LED downlights is that they are energy efficient and provide energy savings of 80-90%. Although LED downlights are more expensive, they cost less to run and will pay for themselves in energy saved between 1 and 2 years depending on usage.

Whereas an inefficient 50W halogen downlight actually uses more power to run it (up to 75W), LED downlights are energy efficient and use only 7.9W to power the 3x3W LEDs. Less power goes in but more light comes out.

To make ordering and installations easier, the LED downlights in this section come as a complete fitting, the 3x3W LED module is integrated into the fitting and is supplied with a built in LED driver for direct mains voltage supply. The life expectancy of LED downlights is between 30,000 and 75,000 hours depending which type you choose. When compared to halogen which is between 1,000 and 5,000 hours or CFL which is 10,000 to 15,000 hours. With an average use of 6 hours per day LED downlights will last between 15 and 30 years. No lamps will ever need replacing again!

Contrary to popular belief LED downlights do not generate a lot of heat, nowhere near that of a halogen. Evo LED downlights in particular are cool to touch even when they have been left on for a long period of time. Each LED downlight comes with a built in heat sink. The heat sink allows air to pass through the fins and effectively dissipate any heat that is generated.

Part L of the Buildings Regulations states that around one quarter of all lighting must be made up from energy efficient sources. For light fixtures such as downlights to comply with this they must produce 40 lumen per watt. Nearly all CFL downlights do not achieve this and even some LED downlights don't. The natural white version of Evo LED downlight produces 54 lumen per watt and the warm white produces 46 lumen per watt, both easily exceeding the requirements.

Evo LED downlights can be installed with full peace of mind as they are fire rated and comply with Building Regulations Parts B, C, E, L and P.
