Lowest Life Cycle Cost Pumps
Once considered the theoretical concept of academics, rarely applied in practice, life cycle cost analysis is fast becoming the accepted method for the evaluation of both capital projects and items of replacement plant. Indeed to assist pump users in the evaluation of whole life costs the Confederation of Pump Manufacturers has in 1999 issued a specification (LLC) for establishing and reducing Life-cycle costs.
The developing world has become acutely aware of the effect of its waste and the introduction of levies on CO2 emissions now directly taxes the inefficient users of energy. Globalisation is squeezing maintenance budgets and demanding an increased mean time between major service outages.
Initial capital cost is, in most instances, a fraction of the whole life cost of a typical pumping installation. Energy, unplanned downtime with resultant loss of productivity and replacement of "lower life expectancy consumable parts" such as seals and bearings equates to as much as 80% of the total life-cycle cost.
SPP's recognition of this increasing emphasis on whole life cost when evaluating pumping schemes for the twenty-first century has lead to the development of our 'Lowest Life-Cycle Cost Series' of pumps.
The concept behind this series is quite simply to provide our customers with pumping solutions offering them the lowest total cost of ownership.
Incorporating both clean liquid and solids handling pumps, a world class series of pumps has been assembled combining many of our existing well proven hydraulic designs, finely tuned with the aid of three dimensional computational fluid dynamics with new innovative designs.
Mechanical designs have been substantially upgraded, utilising high grade materials for standard build options previously only associated with fully API 610 compliant products.
Lowest Life Cycle Split Case Pumps
SPP's Lowest Life-cycle Cost Series of Horizontal Split Casing pumps have been specifically developed to meet the requirements of the 21st century pump user. The best of SPP's existing, well-proven designs, have been fine tuned with the aid of three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics, to attain the optimum performance minimising power consumption and internal re-circulation.
Mechanical designs and standard materials of construction have been substantially upgraded, in order to offer the end user unrivalled longevity and the lowest cost of ownership.
Single and Multi-Stage Vertical Turbine Pumps
SPP's Lowest Life-cycle Cost Series of Single and Multi-Stage Vertical Turbine pumps have been designed for longevity and incorporate many standard features, which facilitate ease of maintenance.
A spacer coupling between the thrust bearing assembly and seal chamber allows a cartridge mechanical seal to be removed without dismantling the headpiece and removing the driver.
Easily removable keyed muff type couplings connect all shafts, facilitating disassembly of the whole pump unit with minimal risk of damaging expensive component parts.
High-grade standard materials of construction and a rugged stiff shaft mechanical design coupled to state of the art hydraulics, offer unrivalled longevity and the lowest cost of ownership.
Multi Stage Pumps
SPP CD range or horizontal and vertical multistage pumps are designed for longevity, minimum through-life cost and ease of maintenance.
High grade materials of construction and generously rated bearings provide a rugged combination to meet the demands of heavy-duty applications.
CFD tuned hydraulics and state of the art manufacturing techniques optimise efficiencies and minimise running costs.
Rigid, heavy duty, fabricated-steel baseplates prevent distortion. Optional, low-cost, SPP design condition monitoring packages enable predictive maintenance schedules to extend service intervals.
Condition Monitoring
In order to minimise the ownership costs of capital equipment, it is critical for the user to monitor and maintain the equipment once installed. Failure to do so will impact both on the mechanical integrity and economic performance of the installed equipment.
Early diagnosis of potential equipment failure can result in considerable repair cost savings and crucially a reduction in unplanned downtime. Monitoring of pump energy consumption and system efficiency, will bring visibility to pump wear, operating efficiency and highlight any system irregularities, all of which will help the user minimise energy consumption and reduce operating costs.

Transformer Oil Pumps
SPP's transformer oil pump range is designed and manufactured to the highest quality standards. SPP have been producing transformer oil pumps for more than sixty years. Life expectancy in many cases has exceeded forty years. Applications include oil circulation in the following:- power transmission, distribution and electric traction locomotive transformers.
Weatherproof - they can be installed in the open without any protective covering, all moving parts being completely enclosed and sealed.
No gland leakage - the pump and driving motor are built as a unit on a common shaft. The transformer oil circulates through the windings so that no shaft seal is required, thus eliminating completely the dangers of oil leakage or entry of air.
Easily mounted and coupled - with four alternative branch positions for either vertical or horizontal mounting, the pumps can easily be accommodated in a variety of cooling pipework arrangements.
Robust construction - the pumps are robustly build and the glandless construction enables the impeller to be fixed close to the shaft bearing.
Rotation - a window is fitted in the shaft end to enable direction of rotation to be observed.
No lubrication - the heavy duty ball and roller bearings carrying the robust shaft are lubricated by internal circulation of the transformer oil.
Traction
Traction pumps are used on Traction Transformers and Converters fitted to most types of electric train operating around the globe. The purpose of the pump is to increase the efficiency of the transformers and converter by force circulation of transformer oil around the transformer or converter.
These pumps are manufactured from high grade cast aluminium giving high strength performance with excellent strength to weight rations. The aluminium avoids the ingress of rust or oxidation that can be present with some cast iron or steel designs and the pump incorporates an in-line integral stator rotor which provides the power drive. The pumps are glandless with the stator rotor being in line and integral to the pump. The stator rotor is immersed in the flow of transformer oil. Insulation to IP55 these pumps are weather proof.
The high design and manufacturing standards ensure a long and trouble free operational life. All pumps are thoroughly performance and mechanically tested and certified before despatch.
Inline
The transformer oil in-line pumps are integrated pump/motor elements within the same frame, of weatherproof construction, specifically for outdoor use and arranged for direct pipeline installation. The compact design saves space and allows for horizontal or vertical mounting.
To allow for minimum thermo-syphonic resistance the pumps are designed with large passages.
The in-line arrangement allows for close positioning of supporting bearings. Lubrication of the bearings and cooling of the motor windings is achieved with the circulated transformer oil. This results in a very efficient rate of cooling of the motor windings with minimum recirculation losses and maximum utilisation of available motor power.
The in-line design is selected to meet specific customer duty requirements. All pumps supplied are performance tested and statically tested at 5 Bar in hot oil at 60º C for 24 hours to prove joint integrity.
