Category 5E cabling is the most cost effective way to get Gigabit Ethernet to your desktop.

There are no existing protocols that will work on Category 6 but not on Category 5E, but Category 6 does have a bandwidth of 200Mhz against Category 5E at 100Mhz.

So unless you are moving large files over the network, you will notice little difference.

Cat 6 cabling systems can support up to 1 Gigabit per second.

Cat 6 cabling attracts a cost premium of 20-30% over Category 5E, mainly because it is much more delicate than Category 5E and requires larger and better containment (trunking & cable trays)
