Three Axis Goniometer for UHV (Slimline)

This is a new ultra high vacuum (UHV) compatible goniometer for applications which require accurate angular alignment of a target with a particle beam and detector, as, for instance, encountered in Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and channelling, low-energy ion scattering (ion scattering spectroscopy) and atom beam scattering experiments.

The instrument, pictured above, facilitates rotation of a target about three perpendicular areas with an angular reproducibility of better than 0.05°. It is shown mounted onto a high precision xyz translator which adds three target translation. All six drives can be converted for stepper motor drive.

The instrument is a completely redesigned version of our original 3-axis goniometer introduced over a decade ago which has proven its long term reliability.

Arrangements have been made on the specimen mount for the mounting of a detachable or fixed target holder. The detachable holders may be transferred under vacuum from an insert chamber in which six samples can be vacuum-loaded at any time.

The goniometer, target insert chamber with carousel and transfer system, can be obtained as an add-on package to most existing scattering chambers.

Motorised
The goniometer can be automated by fitting stepping motor drive attachments, such as those of our type RMD34. Careful orientation of the motor dirves can reduce installation size.

Automatic 3-axis goniometer system

This is a precision remote control, 3-axis goniometer, typically used for ion beam channelling experiments.

The goniometer allows for crystal orientation in three planes inside a vacuum chamber at pressures of the order of 10-6torr. Also available is a translation table attachment (shown in the picture) which gives the operator an additional fourth linear movement of ±30mm. The movements on the goniometer are driven by 200-step Phytron stepping motors.

Precision Translator

This Precision Specimen Translator has been introduced to complement our range of Rotary Specimen Manipulators and UHV Goniometers.

We believe this to be the only translator on the market specifically designed for Computer Control. Each axis is fitted with a handwheel which is itself a toothed belt drive pulley and the body has mounting facilities to accept a Standard Stepper Motor drive attachment.

Made to the very highest standards of accuracy, this unit features six mini CF34 vacuum input flanges set at an angle to give easy access.

The Z Translation is available in varying lengths to suit individual requirements.

Precision Rotary/Linear Manipulator LMRMD70

The Panmure rotary/linear specimen manipulator utilises a unique eccentric drive mechanism which is beneficial in two ways. Firstly it enables the component parts to be manufactured to the most exacting tolerances, and secondly we can now directly couple the linear motion shaft to the micrometer thimble eliminating the use of spring returns.

These benefits used in conjunction with ball bearings throughout give this drive a smooth feel and enable it to run at high speed with large loads for a long expected life.

Precision Double Rotary Specimen Manipulator 2XRMD70

The Panmure double rotary drive is truly unique in two ways. Firstly, because both rotations use the eccentric drive mechanism that enables us to produce all our manipulators with ultra high precision on high rigidity. Secondly, we can solidly couple to both motions so as to give direct rotation of one shaft inside the other. Both shafts give a continuous 360° rotation.

Sample Transfer Carousel

This unit has been designed to assist with Multi-sampling and movement of samples within the UHV environment. Specifically designed for use with our range of Specimen Manipulators and Goniometers it could easily be modified to accommodate any sample size or loading system. Ideally the carousel would be mounted in a Sub-Chamber, isolated from the Main Chamber by a suitable Gate Valve and would be used in conjunction with a magnetically coupled Linear/Rotary Drive complete with a pick-up device. Samples would be collected in the Sub-Chamber and transferred through the valve to the Main Chamber and there deposited on to the Manipulator

This unit cannot be used in conjunction with the LN Cooling System.
