Blacksmiths Workshop Since 1790
Founded more than 200 years ago in Brading in 1790, our family business has continued until today and we make no secret of being proud of it! The Stay family still lives in Brading and although much has changed over the last two hundred and twenty years, some things do remain the same…

When W. Stay & Son was founded, metal was worked with fire, forge and hammer – and it still is. Back then, our great grandfather had never heard of a telephone table, but if you drew him a picture he would have made it for you. The same applies today and the old anvil and some of the original tools used by grandfather and great-grandfather are still in use in our blacksmiths workshop. Of course, there have been changes on the way, for example we now also have a modern blacksmiths workshop with appropriate technology and safety standards.

Since the start of our business, skills have been passed down from father to son and each generation has added current technological advancements to our traditional base. In the same way, contemporary design has added to our repertoire, rather than replacing the traditional. This process is not at an end. We are always ready to expand our horizons. Your own design may even be futuristic, or perhaps it has never been made before. Rest assured, if it can be made in metal, we can make it!

Because the basic truth remains: We are blacksmiths in a blacksmiths workshop, we work in metal, we create in metal – it’s what we do and we’d love to do it for you! Just contact us and tell us your requirements. We will do the rest.

Estate or park fencing is the traditional five rail continuous fencing which delineates your grounds, keeps stock in and large wild animals out.

Park fencing is at the heart of our business and we can provide and install it anywhere in the United Kingdom… even though our roots remain firmly in Brading, Isle of Wight, where they were originally put down all those years ago.

In keeping with our commitment to progress and respect for the traditional, we now produce a unique ‘home installation’ method for estate or park fencing, which enables it to be assembled by local personnel. This ‘easy fit’ park fencing has weld line strength, without the need for welding on site.

At all times we have a large stock of easy fit fencing and aim to have your order processed and despatched to you within a few days.

The easy fit park fencing uprights, posts and gates come already finished. The top rail and the four lower rails can be primed or galvanised, ready for painting once they are in place. *Please note: When ordering, please state if you would like your estate fencing primed or galvanised. Bespoke Wrought iron gates and railings
It all began with my great grandfather and grandfather crafting gates and railings together in their forge at Brading. In those days of course, all work was bespoke. Nowadays, the market is flooded with mass-produced and sometimes characterless designs, but at W. Stay & Son, we still create bespoke pieces using the age old method of fire, forge and hammer.

Shown below is a selection of designs which will add character to any home. Whether your dwelling is mean or manorial, a cottage or a castle, a semi or a stately home – we can provide you with suitable designs that are still affordable. If you can’t see what you want here, our team of experts will gladly work with you to produce a design that will suit your taste and be totally unique. And to ensure a perfect fit, we hang all our gates and fit all our railings ourselves.

For added security, our gates can be supplied with security locks and keys and we can also supply posts or bolt-on fittings. Upon request, our designs can be individualised with names, numbers and decorative elements of your choice.

Whether your garden is a stately spread or a tiny terrace, our range of wrought iron garden furniture can be manufactured to suit your budget and taste. From practical, hard-wearing and colourful seating, to planters, bowers and tree guards – all our furniture and accessories are made to look great and withstand the tough British weather. Or are you looking for purely decorative items? Our steel spheres, for example, sit perfectly beside our practical combined boot jack & scraper.

Whether you’re after a delicately crafted rose, with individual petals teased out of solid steel, or simply a gate displaying your own initials or family crest, we can deliver it.

For example, our garden furniture can be customised to meet your own design or size specifications. Why not include your initials, or the name of your house, pub or restaurant? As long as it can be made in metal, we can make it happen.

Likewise, any other outside furniture, fencing, gates, gazebos, balustrades, boot scrapers or other items from our range can be made to meet your exact needs. For example, we can provide tables with a glass top to reveal your own pattern, logo or design worked into the support.

And what about indoors? From metal furniture to fittings and accessories – we have all the skills and know-how to totally customise your interior too. Our fireside companion sets can be made to match existing fittings and our fire-baskets, grates and ‘dogs’ of traditional or modern design can replace those thrown out in the post-war rush to modernise.
