  1. How To Create The Perfect Shipping Container Retail Space!
    3 October 2023

How To Create The Perfect Shipping Container Retail Space

Learning how to create the perfect retail space in shipping containers is growing increasingly popular as business owners search for a more flexible and cost-effective option to start, or build a retail empire.

We are all shopping in different ways, and the UK high street as we know it is diversifying. This is largely thanks to the growth of online shopping, and a growing trend for supporting local, independent businesses.

Converting shipping containers into commercial spaces is something we have been doing at Budget Shipping Containers for some time. The average shipping container is 20ft or 40ft in size, so you have to be a little more creative with the space available for the storage and display of your merchandise.  Let’s take a look at how to create the perfect retail space inside a shipping container.

    Shipping Container Doors and Shutters

    Personnel Doors vs. Cargo Doors

With limited interior space, you may want to avoid doors that open inwards.  You could instead choose a traditional personnel door that opens outwards.  Or you could keep the original double cargo doors that are on the end of the container.  These doors swing outwards to open up the entire end of your container, allowing plenty of space for customers to see directly inside your retail space from the outside.  Not many shops are able to offer that!

    Tunnel Containers

Why not take your cargo doors up to another level and consider a tunnel container?  Tunnel containers have double cargo doors at both ends, enabling you to open both ends of the container.  This 20ft tunnel container is a good example of what you can expect, 40ft tunnel containers are also an option if you need more space.  We can also source high-cube tunnel containers which provide additional ceiling space too.

    Side-Opening Shipping Containers

Side opening containers are another option. Side opening shipping containers are fitted with one huge set of side doors that span the full length of one long side of a shipping container (and a single set of end opening doors too).  This allows optimum access to the inside of your container whilst bringing in plenty of natural light too.

If you don’t have enough space for fully opening doors, why not consider a full side-opening roller shutter?  You can still open the entire length of your container without the issue of enormous doors getting in the way!

    Shipping Container Serving Hatches

A roller-shutter serving hatch is a great option if you want to serve customers without them entering your container. Perfect for takeaway outlets or pop-up bars.  A bit like this Shipping Container Ice Cream Kiosk we discovered at our local country park.

This article on Shipping Container Doors offers further information on all options available for access into your container.

    Shipping Container Shelving

Storing or displaying your stock is key in making the most of the space in your shipping container.  For storage, we can offer a range of shipping container shelving and racking options.

To optimise display space inside your shipping container, you can design your own custom shelving which can be fitted by our conversion team, or you may prefer to do this yourself.  Either way, we can advise you on the options available.

This case study of one of our Shipping Container Bar Conversions gives an example of the shelving and bar space that can be installed into your container.

    Extend Your Space

A shipping container is a compact space but there is always the option of extending your retail or service area with outdoor seating. This can be covered with a roll-away awning, or for larger areas, you could consider a Shipping Container Canopy.

Container canopies can be erected atop any original 40ft shipping container and double-stacked containers.  They provide cover for outdoor space and can be used for temporary or semi-permanent requirements.

    Modular Container Stacks

If outdoor space isn’t an option, why not extend your container space upwards? Modular containers can be stacked on top of each other to create multi-storey spaces.  A shipping container staircase can add access and you are using half of the ground space needed than if your containers were arranged alongside each other.

This Custom Built Multi-Use Container Sports Pavillion gives a great example of how stacked modular containers can be used to create retail or hospitality service spaces.

    Container Retail Parks

Fancy conducting some market research? Shipping Container Retail Spaces are a growing trend across the UK. BOXPARK now has several sites across London and was one of the original container shopping concepts.  Whilst HATCH Manchester is another award-winning food, drink, and retail destination created from used containers. Both have definitely paved the way for others to follow and show how a diverse collection of retail and hospitality container businesses can work together to create a fantastic retail experience.

  2. Shipping Container Maintenance Advice
    22 September 2023

Shipping Containers require very little in the way of on-going maintenance, but in this guide we detail some of the basic hints and tips to help maintain your shipping container in a good condition for as long as possible. In this guide we give you some very basic shipping container maintenance tips to help you get the best lifespan out of your container. There are a few simple pointers here to keep your container looking and performing at its best, a few minutes attention every few months can help squeeze years more useful life out of any container.

In this guide we detail some of the basic shipping container maintenance tips for the average customer using their container for storage use, after the initial delivery and setup is completed.

Before any shipping container maintenance is undertaken, its important to have the container positioned and correctly supported – please refer to our guide on how to place a shipping container on your site for storage use if you are unfamiliar how to set up the container for best use and life. In very basic terms we recommend to keep the container raised slightly off the ground and supported on its 4 base corners. This will ensure the underside stays as dry as possible and lasts as long as it can, and keep the container level to ensure the doors work at their best.

    Shipping Container General Use

Take care on the roof. The roof of a shipping container is not designed to carry weight as it is the corner posts provide the strength to stack containers on top of each other. Even the weight of a person walking on the roof can be enough to flex it and lead to damage. Note: avoid walking on container roofs. They are as slippery as ice when wet or damp, and very dangerous if you are unprepared.

Storage of empty pallets and similar on the container roof may help get them out of the way. But this will help to hold water against the metal surface for longer after rainfall which can help the shipping container roof rust away faster. This can also help scratch away the paint layer which is your first line of defence against rusting away. Similar will apply if you have items leaning up against the outside of your shipping container.

Repainting your container can help smarten up your container, but at the same time it can help add a few years more life by giving a new protective layer for the metal from the elements. If you have purchased a container that comes with a small indent in the roof it can help lifespan if you’re able to pop this out, but as long as the shipping container roof can dry out between wet spells this will last a very long time regardless.

    Container Door and Hinge Maintenance

Doors and hinges are the only real moving parts of the container and will be subject to wear over time. We recommend greasing or oiling the door hinges periodically for best free movement.

The door seals generally are very hard-wearing but may start to go brittle and crack when reaching the end of their life. If your seals are starting to fail you will need to get these replaced. The most common problem we see with doors is becoming stiff/jamming due to containers not being on level ground. Over time, particularly on soft surfaces, a container can settle, which could mean that it is no longer level and the doors start to get stiff or jam. If this is the case you will need to re-level your shipping container.

Do check the door hinges and gaskets. after some years of regular use, door gaskets will degrade which can also make a door almost unworkable. All door gaskets are checked in our yard before the sale but it’s an issue to watch carefully if buying your own used container privately.

    Keep your Shipping Container Dry

If water is allowed to collect on the roof of the container this can lead to rust, metal thinning, and moisture intrusion into the container. A roof in good condition should allow water to run off, but any dents or damage may mean water collects on the top.

Always have damage to the roof repaired if the container is stored in an exposed location. Try to keep the inside as dry as possible too, consider using desiccants or a dehumidifier, particularly if the contents are moisture sensitive. If your shipping container has doors or windows in addition to cargo doors check the seal on these occasionally, replacing caulk and weather stripping as required. Keeping water out is probably the most important aspect of shipping container maintenance.

It is important to note, that if the goods you are loading into the container are wet, then you are carrying this moisture into the shipping container. Try to only load your container in the dry where possible, or if you’ve had to load the container when wet, consider venting the container on the next dry sunny day (keeping the doors open to allow the air to circulate). Without removal, this moisture may lead to mould and mildew and may damage your goods.

In basic terms, if you carry water in, it can’t get out. All goods are likely to have a moisture content as well that may need to be considered.

    Container Annual Inspection

Inspect the general condition of the shipping container annually at least, not forgetting the roof. Clean off any debris using water and a brush. If there are any dents, scratches or rust spots consider repairs if needed. Touch-up paint as required – Hammerite will work well if you don’t have access to marine grade paints or other quality metal / outdoor use paints. Remove any loose paintwork and clean any areas before adding a new paint layer but don’t worry about removing every last bit of rust.

Shipping containers are made from Corten Steel which, when rusting, still forms a waterproof layer protecting the metal beneath. Cosmetically you may want to remove rust to improve the look of your container, and of course, fresh paint does offer an extra level of protection, but removing this rust layer won’t significantly affect lifespan positively or negatively. We consider it a cosmetic improvement only. When a scratch is found, a quick rubdown and touch-up with some paint may help prevent an unsightly rust patch from forming.

  3. Do you need planning permission for a shipping container?
    22 September 2023

Do you need planning permission for a shipping container? Our guide answers your key questions > https://buff.ly/2QWugOA

Is planning permission required for a shipping container in the UK.

In the UK Shipping Containers should be classed as a temporary structure and should be exempt from any planning permission requirements. This is the same exemption as used by caravans and mobile homes. The structure (whilst not having wheels) is portable, it has no foundations, and is not designed to sit permanently. Hence it should be exempt from planning permission requirements.

However, we can’t provide a blanket guarantee. There may be special conditions in place in your area such as areas of natural beauty which can involve extra conditions. One council can interpret one set or rules or guidelines differently to the next. For these reasons we advise to check with your local planning office in advance of ordering a shipping container if there are any concerns.

A single shipping container will class very differently to a yard full of them or a house built from shipping containers. If you are setting up a commercial operation such as a self storage yard and want to use shipping containers, then our advice is that planning permission would almost certainly be required. As would be the same for any house or large structure built from shipping containers (you may also like to check out our top 10 tips if looking to set up your own self storage yard).

If you are a farmer or a small industrial unit, wanting a single container on your site to store your own gear in relevant to your day to day trade or business then in the vast majority of cases no planning will be required.

If you are planning to fit permanent electrics or plumbing into a shipping container, this may also alter the interpretation of a temporary structure, and this may mean planning permission is now required. There is a lot of ambiguity here and its not possible for us to give you a clear answer that will apply to every case.

We have helped many customers who have needed planning permission for their shipping container. Sometimes our additional services have helped with the approval of the planning permission. Here are a few options that we can offer, and a couple of DIY options that may help the planning process if built into any planing application.

Refurbished Shipping Containers, repainted in your choice of colour.

Taking a fully checked and repaired used shipping container, we can give it an external repaint, often in a neutral dark green shade that can help it blend in with the surroundings. Very popular in all settings (both urban and rural locations). This refurbished range offers a very cost effective way to ensure your shipping container is easy on the eye when compared to a basic used shipping container. As with a used container you will still get dinks and dents along the side and end walls, but the repaint offers a much cleaner and more consistent finish. Dark green is our most popular shade for ‘blending in’ but we can offer almost any colour to request.

Its very common for us to repaint a shipping container dark green to help fit with planning requirements. Aside from meeting planning requirements its also often a great way to help the shipping container blend in better with the surrounding land and can help appease neighbours and other interested locals.

Cladded Shipping Containers to help with Planning Permission

One step up from the repainting option, wooden cladding offers a very smart finish, ideal for sites where the container will remain on display for large numbers of visitors to site. We can clad any of our containers in wood, from a basic storage container up to a fully kitted out office or canteen unit, or a complete office building built from a number of 40ft shipping containers.

Hide your container to help with planning permission

This may not be an obvious option, but depending on the space and time you have available this can be one of the most cost effective ways to keep your shipping container out of sight.

Some customers have used fencing with a front gate entry to hide the shipping container in its own small compound, others with more time have planted bushes and hedgerows around the shipping container.

At this time we don’t’ have many example pictures to show you. We would like to invite any customers to send in some photos of their hidden shipping containers and we will reward you with a treat for your office as well as a permanent link to your website here and a shout out on our social media channels.

  4. 10 uses for Shipping Containers you might not have thought of
    5 September 2023

Can you think of alternative uses for shipping containers? When you look at a shipping container you might just see a giant steel box that is used to move goods all around the world.  But look a bit harder and you will discover a whole list of other possibilities and uses for humble shipping containers that will make life a bit more organised, efficient, and more interesting.

We know this might take a little bit of imagination so we have collated a list of 10 innovative uses for shipping containers that you might never have thought of.

    1. Building site offices and stores

Construction sites can be dangerous places for visitors and its hard to maintain a professional welcome while large machines drill and rumble around you.  Builds don’t stop for bad weather but you still need somewhere nearby to hold a site meeting or those all-important tea breaks.  Shipping containers can be useful for all manner of reasons on a building site including reception areas, offices, canteens, and toilet facilities – not to mention temporary, secure storage for the valuable machinery and equipment that needs to be locked away at the end of the day.

We can supply a range of new, used, and refurbished shipping containers that have been (or can be) easily adapted for use for any of the above requirements.  We can supply containers with fitted security doors and secure windows with anti-vandal shutters, fitted with electrics and water supply if needed.

We can also supply containers for use as secure areas for lockers and changing rooms for site workers.  Due to new COVID restrictions, these might benefit from a door at either end to create an efficient one-way system.  Take a look at these neat 12ft office containers as an example of what is available.

For storage of large machinery, you might like to consider a high cube container, with a standard height of 9ft 6, these are excellent options for keeping diggers and small tractors safely under lock and key.

    2. Storage for house renovation or removals

Moving house or renovating your home is a stressful business.  Everyone hates packing their whole life into boxes, finding somewhere to keep it, and unpacking it all again at the other end.  If you have a large-scale house renovation project, the last thing you need is any worries about damaging your belongings or having them stolen if they are not stored in a secure location.  Shipping containers are ideal for short term or longer storage requirements such as these because they are extremely secure and can be easily delivered to your desired location for a reasonable price.

We can easily supply a smart-looking container from our range of used storage containers varying in size depending on how much stuff you have to store and how much space you have to keep it.

    3. Sports club stores

Sports clubs and grounds often approach us for assistance with storing excess sporting equipment and furniture that is cluttering up other areas.  Shipping containers can be used to safely and securely store equipment for a whole range of sports, kits, discarded tables and chairs, goals, and even lawnmowers.  A used shipping container is ideal for this kind of storage use, many are still in good visual condition and won’t cause an eyesore on your grounds.

Have a look through our used container section to see what bargains we currently have at a depot near you.

    4. School storage

We have supplied storage containers to many local and national schools in the UK to securely store surplus classroom furniture, PE equipment, staging blocks, and PTA paraphernalia for the school Christmas and Summer fayres.  One of our most recent commissions was this very smart 2oft Shipping Container for Warwick School

If you are concerned about the contents of your container being damaged by damp or mildew we can recommend and supply a range of anti-condensation treatments for shipping containers

    5. Hospital and PPE storage

The global coronavirus pandemic created a huge rise in demand for PPE in hospitals and healthcare settings.  Supplying shipping containers to hospitals, care homes, and pharmacies became an important part of our business during the UK lockdown.  Shipping containers can be dispatched and delivered at relatively short notice for storage of PPE and medicines and we will always prioritise key industries where possible.  This is an example of one particular container order we delivered to East Surrey hospital for PPE storage during the lockdown.

For efficient storage that makes the best use of the space available we recommend one of our shipping container shelving systems listed here

    6. Horse tack rooms

Secure and weatherproof storage for horse tack and equipment is important, and shipping containers fit the bill perfectly.  A storage container placed in your yard won’t attract too much attention with its anonymous appearance, and even if they do, a steel container is pretty much as secure as they come.  New (one trip) containers come with a lockbox (padlock cover) fitted as standard, and these are often fitted to our used and refurbished models too (depending on what the container was used for previously).  A lockbox will protect the container padlock from thieves and vandals and we highly recommend them for storage containers.

    7. Secure tool storage

Tool thefts from vans are becoming more common than ever and tradesmen cannot risk leaving their tools and livelihoods vulnerable overnight in a work’s van.  A shipping container offers a secure and inconspicuous storage solution for power tools that can be placed on your own land keeping your precious kit highly protected and away from inquisitive eyes.

     8. A holiday

Our recent blog post on 10 cool shipping container hotels for a socially distant getaway attracted a lot of attention and we had a great time researching shipping container accommodation to include in it.  There are way more shipping container B&Bs, glamping lodges, hotels, and hideaways than you would ever imagine.  Not only are they comfortable, but they offer a very cool and quirky way to have a break from it all too!

    9. A sturdy garden shed

Shipping Container sheds give perfect protection for your precious garden tools and equipment, with ample space for all of your furniture, toys, bikes, and more.  Traditional wooden sheds are a popular option but they are not as secure as a sturdy shipping container, and they tend to rot and wear over time.  A shipping container can withstand countless ocean crossings and still look almost new, so it could certainly hold up well as a garden shed!

There are a few options to consider when searching for a shipping container as a garden shed including a used shipping container, or a flat pack garden storage shed which are both available from our yards.  If you are concerned about upsetting the neighbours by plonking a giant steel box into your garden you could also opt for some external timber cladding.  Cladding is an extremely popular customisation option, and an option we can readily assist with.

    10. Somewhere to live

Shipping container homes are a growing trend across the world.  Container homes are more sustainable and often predominantly cheaper than traditional building materials.  Many shipping container home builders describe them as giant lego blocks due to the seamless way they can be stacked together to create space and interesting shapes and sizes.  You can invite light with glass walls and roofs, paint them all manner of colours and add all kinds of extra features.  Shipping container homes are definitely here to stay and if you have a container home project in mind, we would love to be involved!

10 uses for Shipping Containers you might not have thought of
  5. Flat Rack Shipping Containers
    5 September 2023

Flat rack shipping containers are made for shipping of specialised and oversized items. They consist of a flat bed and end-frames of the container, with no side walls or roof. Oversized cargo beyond the full width or height of the container can be loaded. Flat racks will have a number of lashing points along each side to use when securing cargo.

There are several variants of flat rack container, so it’s very important to make sure you are buying the best type for your use. In this article we aim to give a basic overview of the options for flat rack containers, and their uses.

    Flat Rack Container Sizes

As with all shipping containers, flat racks are all 8ft wide. They came in lengths of 20ft and 40ft. The larger 40ft flat racks are also sometimes available in ‘high cube’ size (9ft 6ins high, rather than standard 8ft 6ins – this only relates to the heights of the ends of the flat rack container)

    30ft Flat Rack Containers

30ft Flat Rack containers are not produced or used by the shipping lines. Whilst 30ft is a standard ISO size for shipping containers, none of the major shipping line run 30fts any more, meaning most ports, boat and trains are no longer made to handle this size of shipping container.  If your item is longer than 20ft you will need a 40ft flat rack to ship, unless you can break it down to fit into 20ft containers.

    45ft Flat Rack Shipping Containers

45ft flat rack shipping containers are produced in very small numbers and are rarely available on the open market. If nothing else will work for you, please let us know and we can check with our network of suppliers if any are available.

Types of Flat Rack Shipping Containers

Flat Rack containers come in a few different variants, with varying spec for the end sections, the floor type and the maximum payload it can carry. Typically, a 20ft flat rack will have a payload of around 31,000kg and a 40ft will have around 39,000kg, however higher rated options are available if required for super heavy loads.

Fixed End Flat Rack Shipping Containers

These containers have the bed section and fixed (non-collapsible) ends. They can be loaded for shipping. Provided that the overall width (inclusive of securing and lashing materials) does not exceed 2438mm then they are treated as ‘in-gauge’. If the cargo is wider than this they are still shippable, as ‘out of gauge’ cargo.

Fixed end flat racks are an older design of flat rack container, and are generally no longer produced.

    Collapsable End Flat Rack Containers

As the name implies, these are much the same at first glance to fixed end flat rack containers, but the ends can be collapsed. This has several benefits; if they are to be stored empty then much less space is needed, and you can also stack and transport multiple empties on one vehicle.

When transporting empty flat rack containers in a stack, they can commonly go 4 or 5 high on a UK truck without going over-height, but they require stacking pins or interlocks to secure them for transit. They can be also be moved on boats and trains empty like this if required.

Flush Folding Collapsible Flat Rack Containers

These containers have been designed as a collapsible End Flat Rack Container, but with the added feature that the end walls fold flush with the base when collapsed. These containers can be used for ‘over length’ cargo by collapsing the ends and lashing down the items. Please note that shipping lines will charge significantly more for over-sized cargo, so if you can break down your shipment into standard containers this will almost certainly be cheaper overall.

Super Heavy-Duty Flat Rack Shipping Containers

Flat Rack containers are made for transporting large, bulky goods. Heavy machinery and items such as ships propellers or turbines are often moved this way, some of which are heavier than the standard payload of around 39,000kg! For this reason, flat racks are produced with payload ratings of up to 65,000kg. If you do need a flat rack container with increased load capacity please contact us for availability.

    Platform Shipping Containers

Platform Containers consist of a deck only, with no walls, end frames or roof. Like a flat rack container these are made for transporting oversized cargo, but platforms cannot be stacked once loaded. Platform Containers are not commonly available in the UK, but are more widely used elsewhere in the world. Due to their scarcity these containers tend to be more expensive than standard flat rack containers – but this will vary on what stock we have available and where they are.

Alternative Uses for Flat Rack Containers

Outside of shipping cargo, flat rack containers have proved to be ideal for the construction of temporary or semi-permanent bridges. Their high load capacity and slim profile mean that they can be used to span a waterway or other obstruction as an instant bridge. With adequate support at each side a flat rack container bridge will have the strength to cope with large vehicles and machinery. Most options will need to have their end frames removed to be used in this way, we can help with this.

This type of container has also been used as a temporary wall (the platforms being stood on their sides). This was used to divide a scrap yard or aggregate yard into sections, which could be adjusted as space requirements for each section changed.

We have also used flat rack containers as decks for roof access to shipping containers. The roofs of shipping containers are not designed to hold weight, so even just one person standing on top is likely to damage it. A flat rack container placed on top will make this area usable as a platform for storage, or a handy vantage point.

Flat Rack containers can be stacked, so can even be used as outdoor racking for palletised storage. They can be stacked up to 8 high at standard payloads, but you may want to check on how high your forklift can reach! When stacking containers we would always recommend use of interlocks to fix them together.

Cutting the Ends off Flat Rack Containers

Depending on how you are using the container you may want the ends of a flat rack removed. We can help with this! Let us know your plans and we can advise on how best to achieve your aims. If you do need the ends removed from your container, we can arrange this before delivery. Very often this is a minimal extra cost (depending on the level of finish required)  This will depend on scrap steel price and labour rates in the yard concerned (idea being that the scrap value of the removed ends covers most or all of the labour costs to cut them off).

  6. Essential guide to setting up your home office (from a shipping container)
    18 August 2023

More people than ever are choosing to work for themselves.  Self-employment is a big step and setting up a new workplace is a huge cost for a new business, but it is important to set a clear boundary between your work life and your home life.

Working from home might seem like a great idea, but unless you have a clearly designated workspace you may find that domestic life creeps into your work time.

Housework, families, dogs demanding walks and unexpected visitors can have a negative effect on your productivity.  When you are in ‘work-mode’, you need a clear head-space, privacy, peace and quiet, and the right ambiance.  It is difficult to find these when you are sitting at the kitchen table.

Installing an office in your garden – or perhaps further afield if you find some available land – will create a dedicated place of work that still belongs to you, without the distractions of a hot desk in a business centre, or working in your spare bedroom.

A shipping container office offers a cost-effective and customisable solution to your need for a work address.  And creating one is simpler than you expect!

This essential guide to setting up a Shipping Container Office will help you create your perfect home office from scratch.

    Where to start?

    Space and Accessibility

There are a few boxes to tick before you start looking for a shipping container, beginning with space and accessibility.  A shipping container delivery truck must be able to access your property and have enough space to offload your container.

When you order your container, you will need to supply a delivery postcode and any information that delivery drivers need to know about accessing your property.  This includes the route in, narrow lanes, low bridges, overhead restrictions, and anything else you can think of.

The delivery truck will need to park on hard ground to offload your container, and if your address is on a busy road you will need to advise of traffic regulations for loading and unloading. Delivery drivers are not allowed to block a public highway so you may need to assist with managing traffic while they deliver.

We may ask you to supply photographs of your site and the area where the truck will be sitting to deliver your container so we can carry out any necessary checks for smooth delivery.  We ask that you are completely clear when discussing your delivery with us, to avoid delays, extra charges or complete cancellation if the driver encounters something unexpected when they arrive.

If you are at all concerned over access restrictions please get in touch. We can often advise on access and suitability, and if we simply can’t get a shipping container office into your garden we do have a number of flat pack office options that can get around the delivery access issue.  There is a wealth of information on delivery available on our website here, and in our FAQs section or feel free to ask our team, that’s what we are here for.

Do I need planning permission for my container office?

This is probably one of our most asked questions about shipping container offices!  Generally, shipping containers are classed as temporary structures, as they do not require foundations.  This should make them exempt from planning permission but there are exceptions to every rule, so we always recommend that you check with your own local authority.  Planning may be required if you are to fit electrics or plumbing to any unit, so please check with your local planning authority in advance if there is any doubt.

    Sticking to your budget

Our name is Budget Shipping Containers for a reason!  We will work with you to find a container office that meets your budget and your requirements.  You are essentially buying a big steel box, but this box could be a ready-made container office that needs some minor modification to suit your requirements, or you might decide to have a new shipping container converted and customised into a bespoke office.  We will help you decide on which would work best for your budget and talk you through each option.

You can use our website as a starting point to view the different types of container offices that we offer to find which one would work better for you.

New, Used or Flat Pack Container Office?

As previously mentioned, there are several types of container office to choose from.  Let’s look at each in a bit more detail:

    New Container Offices

This is a new (one trip) container that can be completely modified to your specific office design.  You get to choose where the doors and windows are placed, the colour, where the electrics go, and any water supply points if you choose to have a toilet or sink fitted. Having your own container office made to order gives you a degree of customisation that you won’t get elsewhere. You can genuinely design he space around your needs.

New containers will also be fitted with a secure lockbox as standard; this offers excellent security for your office which is vital to protect any valuable equipment or files.

    Used Container Offices

A used container might be better for you if working to a stricter budget.  These containers have previously been used as offices so they will come with doors, windows, etc already in place – and potentially a few dinks on the exterior.  A used container won’t offer you as much choice as this is based on what stock we have available at the time but we generally have a wide stock available, and you can rest assured that it will be completely checked over – including electrics – by our professional team.  Have a look at some of the used container offices on our website – they offer fantastic value!

    Timber Clad Container Offices

TIMBER CLAD CONTAINERS MAKE AN ATTRACTIVE HOME OFFICE.

Timber cladding your container office is ideal if you want to smarten up the exterior.  Timber cladding is a very popular option for container offices and is available on new or used containers.

    Flat Pack Container Offices

If you worry that a delivery truck could not lift a standard 10ft shipping container into your garden, you might consider a Flat Pack Container office.  As the title suggests, they can be broken down into panels and moved as needed, which makes them great if you don’t plan to stay in one place for too long!  Flat Pack Container Offices are also lined and insulated and fitted with electrics if required, they are pretty much ready to go!

Learn more about New, Used and Flat Pack Container Offices here.

The exterior of your container office

Have you dismissed a shipping container office because they look too much like – well, shipping containers?  That’s a fair reason, we can imagine that some disgruntled other halves or fussy neighbours might object it you plonked a bit rusty box in your garden.  But fear not!  We can help you transform that rusty box into an attractive container office in no time at all!

YOU CAN CHOOSE THE COLOUR OF YOUR SHIPPING CONTAINER OFFICE

    Shipping Container Painting

Our custom shipping container painting service means that you can paint your container office pretty much any colour you like – as long as you can provide the RAL colour code – we offer this service at all of our depots.  We use Marine Grade paint, which is extremely hard wearing and durable, so it will also help to extend the life of a used container.

You can choose from an array of colours, there is a full-colour library on our website to give you some inspiration.  Click here to view.

Be clever with your office space

A 10ft or 20ft shipping container office doesn’t give you very much space to play with. For a standard garden office, this doesn’t pose a problem, but you do need to consider storage space, desk space and room for any equipment you might bring in.

Pinterest is a great source for inspiration when deciding on the layout and décor of your container office.  You want your office to feel personal to your business and be a welcoming space if you intend to have clients visiting you.  You will be spending a lot of time in your office, so make it work for you.

    Choose natural daylight

Natural daylight will help boost your energy and productivity so don’t block it out!  If you are choosing a new container conversion, we can work with you to decide where to place windows, and our used container offices will very likely have them already installed.

When decorating your container office, use colours that invite and reflect the natural daylight to help create extra space.  Again, Pinterest is a great source of inspiration for internal décor ideas so get pinning!  Make sure to stop by our Shipping Container Offices board while you are there.

These helpful points to give you a good starting point for setting up your shipping container office.  If you have any queries at all our helpful and very experienced would love to take your questions, just contact us for advice.

  8. Guide to Shipping Container Sizes

    Shipping Container Dimensions

Shipping container dimensions are mostly standardised. This is to ensure that the ships, cranes and fleets of trucks around the world can handle and transport them.

Standard height shipping containers (8ft 6ins high) come in various lengths of which 20ft and 40ft are the most common. Other lengths are available (and for sale via this site) but are less common. There are also High Cube shipping containers (9ft 6ins high). These are mostly 40ft long but other lengths available.

In addition to the height and length, there are also several modified versions of these containers for specific tasks e.g. Side Opening containers, Tunnel containers, Flat Rack containers etc…

Please note that whilst we have tried to be as accurate as possible, some measurements (notably internal measurements) can vary slightly with the development and modernisation of manufacturing techniques over time. We recommend considering a circa 1 inch (2.5cm) tolerance. Where possible, we have given a range on known variations in dimensions between ranges but we can’t guarantee this to be totally accurate for all ranges. If you have a specific sizing problem or item to load that’s near these dimensions please double check with us in advance and if need be we will get someone to measure the exact container for you.

  9. 40ft HC Stadium Seating Container for FC Hartlepool
    26 June 2023

At the start of 2023, we were contacted by FC Hartlepool to build a stadium seating stand for their football club. FC Hartlepool are a professional association football club based in Hartlepool, County Durham.

Shipping containers for football clubs are incredibly popular, they can be used for storage or converted to changing rooms or stadium seating.

In this case, FC Hartlepool wanted the container converted to a stadium seating stand. Stadium seating is also very popular with other sports groups or outdoor events and activities.

Using a container for stadium seating, gives the stand a very smart look, gives your audience a clean and comfortable place to sit, while also being able to withstand typical British weather. A 40ft HC shipping container can provide seating for up to 74 people when converted to a stadium seating unit.

In this case, FC Hartlepool chose to have 63 seats to allow space for walkways. The solid back of the container will protect from wind and rain, and the overhead canopy will offer shade in those warmer summer days.

We converted the 40ft HC one trip shipping container to the stadium seating in our London conversion depot. One trip containers are a great choice for a project like this. At around a year old, one trip containers have a great long term value and provide a much smarter looking container. A high cube container was used as this has an extra foot of height compared to standard height containers. At 9′ 6″ this high cube container gives more overhead space for all those cheering crowds!

To make this stadium seating one 40ft side and both 8ft sides were removed to create an open viewing area for the spectators. Extra support had to fitted to reinforce the container roof, to stop it sagging over time.

The floor was raised ready for the seating to be installed so that all spectators should be able to see over those in front of them. Guard rails were added to the side and ends of the container as a barrier, with spaces for entrance/exit for the spectators. These guard rails allow the spectators help balance themselves when getting to their seats. The sturdy rails also offer some protection from flying objects, like footballs, cricket balls and maybe a stray bat or two. Fitting a guard rail, and removing the corrugated steel from the ends of the container gave the unit more visibility for the spectators in the stand.

Upright supports were fitted at the central entrance of the container support. These supports were made to be as thin as possible to ensure the view from the stand would not be disrupted.

To To finish, the stadium seating container was primed and then painted blue (RAL5013) to match FC Hartlepool’s club colours. The inside was painted white to lighten up the container and give the unit a clean finish. The seats were installed to alternate between the two club colours. The stadium seating container had 63 seats installed, this left space for the sides and central walkways within the unit. Once the container was delivered, FC Hartlepool fitted their own lights and electrics within the stand.

  10. 8 Questions To Ask When You Buy a Used Shipping Container
    20 June 2023

    1. What size shipping container do I need?

This is an important question, and a good place to start! The answer is very dependent on how you plan to use your shipping container, and the space you have available.  There are various sizes of shipping containers to choose from but if you want something very specific (like a side opening shipping container for instance) then you could be limiting yourself if it is in shorter supply.

A standard height shipping container is 8ft 6 inches and the most common lengths are 20ft or 40ft, and 20ft containers are usually the most popular due to their versatility. Learn more about shipping container sizes.

    2. Is the supplier reputable?

As with many industries, when buying a shipping container there are certain sellers who are out to make money at your expense and take advantage of any inexperience.  To avoid mishaps, do your research and look for a shipping container supplier with a sound reputation, good (genuine) reviews, and an established name. Approaching private sellers can be risky, and we would recommend that you see the container for yourself before parting with any cash if buying privately.

At Budget Shipping Containers we pride ourselves on the trusted reputation of our experienced team, our network of 16 container yards across the UK, and our competitive prices.  We are not a pushy sales team, and genuinely want to help you find the best possible container for your budget and requirements. We understand the huge value of referrals and repeat custom, so we want you to be happy with you container purchase!  You can read our reviews here. As well as reviews left on our own website we also have a number of reviews left on our Facebook page, our google profile and on yell.com as well as a few reviews on other review sites.

    3. Can you deliver my container (and how much will delivery cost)?

Shipping container deliveries can take careful planning, with specialist haulage vehicles and experienced drivers. Always ask your container supplier for a delivery cost, and make sure to be specific on the details of your site location, access, and surrounding space.  The last thing you want are surprises for the delivery team on the day which could result in extra charges for you, or even a failed delivery.

Shipping container delivery prices will vary depending on your location, whether a crane will be required to lift the container and how flexible you can be on the timing of the delivery.  We request all of this information at the time of enquiry so we can provide a quote for the delivery along with the price of your containers.  Learn more about our delivery options here.

    4. How much is the container?

The price of your shipping container is obviously a big deciding factor in your purchase. Be mindful that the lowest price is not necessarily the best choice, and sometimes it is better to go for quality over quantity [the price].  Gather a few quotes to get an idea of best value for money, and take into consideration other factors like supplier reputation, delivery options and the standard guarantee from your container supplier (see below).

    5. Is it watertight and structurally sound?

Shipping containers are sturdy, but they go through a lot during their years of service at sea and on land!  Check that your container is watertight and structurally sound – either in person by checking it for yourself (if a private sale), or seek confirmation from your supplier. Used shipping containers will very likely have some dinks and cosmetic damage to the exterior but this is unlikely to affect its structure or useability.

At Budget Shipping Containers we offer a 12-month wind and watertight guarantee on all of our storage containers, and all of our second-hand seaworthy containers come with a minimum 6 month CSC update, confirming at the time of sale that the container is suitable for export use for a minimum of 6 months.

Logistically we are not always able to offer container viewings prior to purchase, but we do offer our 12-month guarantee on all sales of used shipping containers which provides peace of mind for our customers. If your container springs a leek or a natural defect in the first 12 moths, let us know and we will come and fix it free of charge for you. If you or someone else damages the container repairs will be chargeable but this is a service we can offer for you.

    6. Can I customise my shipping container?

Being able to customise shipping containers is a huge part of their attraction! Repainting your container to match your custom colours, and adding other conversion options such as high-security doors, windows, electrics and lighting are all possible.  You can obviously make the changes yourself, or ask your supplier to do them for you (which is much easier and can avoid any damage from an inexperienced attempt!) Learn more about our container conversion options.

    7. Will my used shipping container be secure?

Shipping containers are extremely secure but to deter thieves, a lock box (padlock cover) is always a good idea. As a rule, used shipping containers are not fitted with a lock box as standard so this is an extra you may have to request from your supplier, or you may choose to fit one yourself.  Learn more about shipping container security.

    8. Has my container been professionally checked and repaired in the UK before sale?

Most UK traders buy their container stock from a shipping line or leasing company, they will have their containers checked and repaired and then offer them for sale.

Some other traders – these are often based abroad – may sell containers directly from a shipping line to the end user without having the containers checked over first.  These containers may be sold as ‘suitable for shipping’ but they may be relying on the fact that the container did not get damaged or incur any wear on its most recent import trip.

Many private sales (eg: via eBay) will be older containers that have not been checked over for many years, and these containers will often have door gasket issues making the doors very stiff or impossible to operate.

As container suppliers, we need to supply a reliable, consistent level of repair to our customers.  For this reason, we have every container checked over in our UK yards before they are sold to our customers.  This gives us the confidence to offer and honour to our 12 month wind and watertight guarantee.

If you buy a shipping container from someone who isn’t having their containers checked between arrival in the UK and re-sale, you may be lucky and not notice any difference. However, you also have a fair chance of having a container delivered with some wear and damage that may be near impossible (or very expensive) to fix once on your site.

    Always do your homework!

These 8 questions to ask when buying a used shipping container should help you make a well-judged container purchase.  Remember to do your homework as this is a big purchase, and it is important to make sure you consider all options before making a decision.

Budgetshippingcontainers.co.uk offer the UK’s largest online range of shipping containers for sale with a nationwide network of storage and conversion yards and crane equipped delivery vehicles.

8 Questions To Ask When You Buy a Used Shipping Container
  11. Shipping Container prices are dropping
    13 June 2023

It is with genuine delight we are able to confirm that the shortage of shipping containers appears to be over with container prices dropping significantly since the new year, and it looks like prices are just about normalising once again. In this article, we discuss the level of price drops when looking to buy a shipping container, and whether it’s a good time to buy a shipping container or not.

The post-pandemic freight boom is over, and as a result, shipping lines have spare containers so they are now able to sell off their old used shipping containers again. With one trip (new) containers from the factories, the factories no longer have more demand than they can supply which has resulted in new container prices!  Ex-factory containers have dropped significantly since their peak. A significant improvement in supply has led to a significant drop almost across the board. This is great news for our customers – and us too, as we believe prices are much more sustainable, and versus a lot of other competing options for a shipping container (eg a large wooden shed for a customer wanting a storage unit) prices for shipping containers over the next 12 months are likely to be more competitive than historical averages.

*Mini disclaimer, we can’t predict the future for certain, but we believe looking at the market today that price increases in the short term are unlikely *

    Will container prices drop further?

This is very hard to predict. It is possible, with prices normalising, this means they are nearing their historical average price. Prices have of course been below average many times in the past.

What we have seen is a big drop in our prices over the November 2022-Feb 2023 period, prices have since remained largely static/stable both from the factory when buying new containers, and from shipping lines and leasing companies when buying used containers on the trade market. this seems to suggest a period of stability but as we say above, we aren’t fortune tellers, any predictions we make are purely our belief when looking at the industry and trade. To us it looks like in the short term, it is unlikely that there will be a further significant shift in shipping container prices.

Is now a good time to buy a shipping container?

OK, in all fairness – anyone trying to sell shipping containers going to tell you that now is a good time to buy – but we say it’s always a good time to buy a shipping container! This question is a bit like asking a bartender if now is a good time for a drink. You will only ever get one answer!

Buying a shipping container is very individual. A lot of customers are solving a problem and an issue. A shipping container often offers a good competitive option versus other available ‘solutions’ in the market, meaning that even an expensive shipping container may still be a very competitive option.

However, one big area for us is self-storage yards and supplying to regular customers. Many of these customers suspended new purchases when prices were very high, and these customers are now coming back on board. This is great to see and it may also help hold prices steady as more demand comes back into the marketplace. This is also another big reason why we feel it is unlikely that we will see further significant drops in prices in the near future.

  14. NEW! Check out our awesome new Pitched Cabins!
    4 April 2023

These standalone pitched cabins are a top quality single unit with a high range of potential uses. Made to order in the UK, these can come in a range of different sizes, and be built to nearly any spec you may want.

These have proven to be very popular as:

    • Home Offices
    • Garden Rooms
    • Studios
    • Small commercial units (Beauty Salon, Barbers, Florist, Gym, and plenty more options)

These cabins can come 8-12ft wide, and from 12ft long to 40ft long. As these are built from scratch, you can specify where you want doors, windows and even internal fixtures and fittings (e.g. a sink unit can go where you want, we can build internal partitions to make multiple rooms inside this cabin. You can even specify where you want electrical points fitted to marry up with equipment you intend to install later on.

The high degree of customisation means there is a near infinite range of possibilities for your final cabin or your solution for your site. Whilst we show some examples of finished units we’ve done for other customers in our images, there are many more options as we can design this to order for you. For a bespoke designed and built product, you will find these prices near impossible to beat.

These are also made in the UK to a high specification, ensuring best long-term value and performance. They have very good levels of insulation as standard that can be upgraded even further.

Coupled with our guarantees, this means you can buy from us with considerable peace of mind versus other options which are likely to be built outside of the UK, to a non UK spec and with very limited level of support should something go wrong with a shipment, delivery or if there is an issue with the manufacture.

We can also build modular structures out of multiple cabins to make bigger spaces if required.

Prices for Mono Cabins and Delivery

Prices are very hard to list here. As these are all made to order to your own spec then we need to discuss your needs and wants before firming up any prices.

Firstly, to check we need to get our large delivery truck into your site, and up next to the spot your cabins’ needs to rest. we may want to check this in detail before offering quotes as if we can’t deliver this into your site, this may not be the best option for you.

From here, smaller basic units, circa 10ft x 10ft can come in well under £10k + VAT all in. A large 12ft x 40ft unit will start at a snip over £20k.

All prices will climb if you want to add in large picture windows, sliding or bi-fold doors, internal partitions, uprated electrics, or any form of plumbing.

    • High spec standalone units with pitched roof
    • Made to order in UK
    • Guaranteed wind & watertight
    • High quality insulation and build
    • Pitched roof high point 9ft 6 inches, low point 8ft.
    • Composite PVC wood effect cladding (Cedar cladding available as an optional extra)
    • Highly Customisable, refine your own spec for your specific site or project.
