  20. Everything you need to know about steel.
    3 April 2023

Mild steel is the most common metal used for components fabricated at Grenville.  A ferrous metal made from iron and carbon, and has exceptional tensile and high-impact strength.  The higher melting temperature means that mild steel is more ductile when heated, making it suitable for forging, cutting, drilling, and welding and easy to fabricate.

    STEEL GRADES

S235JR is a popular steel, all angles, RHS, channels etc., comes as 235JR as standard.  This steel is classed as a structural grade and is used for numerous items seen in daily life.

S275JR is the lowest grade of sheet/plate steel we stock; it bends easily, is the most common, and accounts for 70 % of our stock.  This grade is also classed as structural steel and used for all manner of items.

Cold-reduced DC01 is a brighter, more malleable steel with a much better surface finish.  This grade is commonly used for parts where strength is less of an issue and paint finish is essential.

S355JR is a higher, harder grade.  This more robust steel is used for parts where increased hardness is required – such parts manufactured by Grenville include safety struts, lift parts and parts for the automotive industry.

420MC is a harder steel, but the MC indicates that it’s been rolled with properties that allow bending into tighter radiuses.  Using this rigid but bendable grade, companies can use lighter gauge steel for applications where durable steel is necessary—allowing a good weight/strength ratio which is essential for products like trailers.

RQT701 and Domex700 are the highest and hardest grades of mild steel we use.  We manufacture many parts for the construction industry, such as safety struts and safety-critical items.

Corten is known as weathering steel; commonly used for garden furniture and products which require a rustic finish.  The weathered finish protects the surface of the steel so that once it gains its “rusty appearance,’ it does not continue to decline.

Most steel purchased is in three sizes as standard and dictated by the size of the parts and the best sheet utilisation at the nesting stage.  For more significant batch parts, we can purchase sheets decoiled to length to get the practical layout of components on the sheets, which allows us to provide more competitive prices for customers.

    • 2000mm x 1000mm
    • 2500mm x 1250mm
    • 3000mm x 1500mm

While every product is unique, most begin life at Grenville as a flat sheet of mild steel.  The metal is laser cut using one of our rapid Bystronic fiber laser machines or, depending on requirements, punched with our CNC Trupunch 3000.  Once cut, we form the part into the desired shape using one of our six press brake machines.  It can then be assembled and welded by one of our highly skilled welding team.

All components are subjected to rigorous deburring, grinding and dressing procedures to ensure the highest quality finish.

Mild steel isn’t rust-proof.  We, therefore, offer metal finishing services working to customer specifications, from shot blasting, painting, powder coating, and galvanising to zinc plating.  We carefully select premium suppliers to finish parts to a high standard, including BS EN ISO 1461, ISO 9001 and AS9100 delivering the highest quality finish.

Spanning more than four decades of experience and dedication, we produce the highest quality products from mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium to all specifications supported through the latest Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

Why choose Grenville?  We are committed to providing outstanding quality components, customer service, and technical expertise to an ever-growing diverse range of customers from concept to delivery.

Everything you need to know about steel.
  21. Grenville Engineering invest in fiber laser technology
    10 February 2023

Grenville Engineering the leading Complete Fabrication Solution provider has invested £500,000 in the latest fiber laser technology.

The Bystronic BySprint 3015 fiber laser supports the company's ongoing commitment to invest in new technology and provide an enhanced service offering for its customers.

Acquiring the new fiber laser opens new capabilities with the addition of cutting new materials such as brass and copper.

The new laser can cut with greater speed and accuracy than conventional CO2 lasers providing cost efficiencies and shorter lead times.

The Bystronic laser can cut up to 20mm mild steel, 12mm stainless and aluminium including now 6mm in brass and copper.

Joint Managing Director, Tony Fryer says " A major investment of £500,000 has been made by Grenville Engineering (S-o-T) to enhance its position in an increasingly competitive market of sheet metal fabrications.

The latest Fiber Laser Cutting machine recently installed will boost productivity to meet the demands of a current loyal and growing customer base, ensuring competitiveness along with sustained quality and service.

The Fibre Laser will be supported by a second investment of two CNC Press Brake machines to be installed early December.

The company is expected to reach a £4m turnover by the end of 2016 with further growth in the region of £5m - £6m predicted over the next 3 years.

Grenville's continued success is largely attributable to its hard working employees who are always willing to “Rise to new challenges”, the latest acquisitions will require and secure additional employment to its increasing work force of 56 employees during 2017 and beyond."

  25. Interview with Stuart Rawlinson on £900,000 investments
    10 February 2023

Read the recent ‘Engineering Capacity’ interview with Stuart, our Sales Director, on increasing capabilities and capacity at Grenville Engineering…

Grenville Engineering has invested over £900,000 in the latest laser cutting, bending and punching technology to increase its capabilities and capacity.

One of the key investments was a 10kW Bystronic Bysprint 3015 3000 x 1500 bed fibre laser installed in September 2021. This complemented existing 6kw and 3kW Trumpf fibre laser machines.

Sales Director Stuart Rawlinson explained: “Grenville wanted to invest in the latest technology and this new machine is much quicker than the previous machine. We can produce more parts per minute, get them to our customers more quickly, and increase our capacity.

Another benefit of the new machine is that the more powerful laser can cut thicker material and can also cut thicker material using nitrogen. This eliminates the need for a second operation to remove the oxide layer prior to powder coating.

Stuart added: “It has also taken us into different market sectors by cutting thicker stainless steels.”

Grenville also invested in a new Bystronic Xpert 200t, 3m bed press brake.

Stuart explained: “All our other press brakes are Bystronic models, so we kept with the same manufacturer. All our operators are fully trained on this brand of machine so there was no learning curve or need for extra training. We have been very impressed with the machines we currently have and they do everything we need.

The new machine increases the maximum tonnage available from 150t up to 200t and also has an increased open height for producing deeper boxed parts and also has a full length of integrated fold/flatten mechanism for producing safety edges.

The final investment was in a used Trumpf TruPunch 3000 S11 CNC punch press.

Stuart said: “Our other machine was ageing and having some issues. We decided to buy another but explore the used market again for this machine".

“It was purchased from Severn Machines Ltd. They do a complete refurb of the machine prior to installing it. Again, this was something we had done previously that had worked really well."

“This machine is quicker and has a lot more features, which allows us to use much more tooling available to the machine.”

Summing up how Grenville has enhanced the capacity and capabilities that it can offer its customers Stuart concluded: “Grenville has spent over £900k to increase our capacity and make sure we stay competitive at a time when resource costs are rising. These new machines enable us to offer a much wider variation of parts to customers whilst reducing lead times and increasing our capacity.

“We have had a very strong year and continue to grow, so we need these investments to enable us to keep pace with new and existing customers.”
