Following the success of the Applegate Academy, a traineeship scheme launched in collaboration with Petroc in October last year, three students from North Devon have started Degree Apprenticeships in Business and Management in partnership with Plymouth University.

Claire Knight, Jo Nancekivell and Jon Loates have enrolled on the course, that fully covers the fees of tuition. They will work four days a week and study for the remaining one during their five-year syllabus that is scheduled to run between 2016 and 2021.

Each student will receive a BSc Honours Degree, a Chartered Manager qualification and an additional Chartered Institute of Management certificate whilst gaining five years of valuable, hands-on experience in the workplace.

Stuart Brocklehurst, Chief Executive of Applegate Marketplace, commented: "Each year, five new students will have the opportunity to enrol on a Degree Apprenticeship with Applegate Marketplace. By combining vocational and academic learning, we hope that these courses will provide students with the confidence and necessary experience to make a real impact in the workplace, whether here in North Devon or further afield."

The new Applegate Degree Apprentices shared their thoughts on their aspirations for their five-year course with Applegate Marketplace, Petroc and Plymouth University:

"The friendly atmosphere of staff was a major factor in my decision. It enables me to study for my degree, earn money and gain invaluable experience in the workplace," said Jo Nancekivell.

"I chose the apprenticeship scheme as it will broaden my knowledge within the sector and help me to make a committed and considered decision for my future," commented Jon.

"I wasn’t entirely interested in studying towards a degree and instead wanted to gain experience from a job. This opportunity came along just at the right time." added Claire Knight.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Plymouth University, Professor Simon Payne, commented: "Degree apprenticeships enable us to work even more closely with local businesses to enhance skill levels. They provide students with opportunities to earn and learn, transforming them into rounded graduates fully prepared for the world of work."¿

Petroc Principle, Diane Dimond, commented: "Degree Apprenticeships are a new initiative, we are delighted to be working in partnership with Applegate to provide young people with opportunities for degree level study and ultimately graduate employment in North Devon."
