D-sub (d-sub, d sub, dsub, sub d, d subminiature) connectors are the best known In/Out (I/O) interfacing connector type having a trapezoidal (vaguely "D" shaped) shell such that they have an inbuilt polarisation male to female. Steel shells are normally plated with nickel, tin or RoHS compliant Trivalent Chromium zinc although for anti-magnetic applications the base material may also be brass or other suitable metals. Male connectors with tin plated shells are normally "dimpled" to create good electrical continuity with the mating female, thus ensuring EMI/RFI shielding if screened cables have been terminated to the shell. D-subminiature connectors are available in five standard shell sizes: 9, 15, 25, 37 and 50 way. The dimensions of d-subminiature connectors are generally in accordance with DIN 41652, BS9523 F0018 and MIL-C-24308; because of this they are compatible and interchangeable across manufacturers.

The contact pitch or distance between pins in a standard size connector is generally 2.77mm with 2.54mm or 2.84mm between rows dependant upon whether it's a US or European PCB board 'footprint'. D-sub connectors are available with solder bucket, straight PC, right angled PC, IDC, surface mount or wire wrap terminations and can be fitted with a range of board locks, female jackposts, etc. The application will normally dictate the use of either precision screw machined or stamped and formed contacts with gold plating over nickel finish. The circularity of the contacts and the thickness of the gold plating will influence the number of mating cycles achievable. Insulators are generally polyester with UL rated self extinguishing properties. High-density, 15 (VGA), 26, 44, 62 and 78 way are versions which pack more contacts into a standard dsub shell ~ e.g. a 15 way VGA connector has 15 pins in three rows in a standard 9 way dsub shell size.

Combination connectors allow the engineer to accommodate coaxial, high current or high voltage contacts in the same footprint as a signal connector, thus one connector allows a mixture of in/out functions at the equipment interface. Industrial applications from the simplest hand held data logger to a fully blown industrial Ethernet system have carried the world's best loved I/O connectors into a harsher and less tolerant environment. Industrial connectors face numerous environmental stresses. In order to support transportation, communications, networking, IT, medical systems, etc. they must match the level of product technology and the rapid development and growth of the sector and must combat temperature and humidity; exposure to liquids, oils and chemicals; shock or vibration and RF/EMI interference. 

IP67 Dsub connectors must allow no ingress of dust with complete protection against contact.

They must also prevent ingress of water in harmful quantity when immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time. IP67 is  intended for applications that will get ‘rained on’, or occasionally washed/drenched. They are not intended for use under continuous pressure. In consideration of the broad range of ‘rained on’ definitions, the industry appears to have agreed to a ‘test of immersion for 30 minutes, at a depth of 1 metre, or the equivalent air test at 1.45 psi. That is the Qualification Test. (Protected against the effects of temporary immersion between 15cm and 1metre. Duration of test 30minutes).

In2Connect's IP68 Pintail circular connectors from Weipu build an indoor/outdoor interconnect system that offers the performance and reliability of MIL threaded connectors at the cost of a commercial (COTS) product. The SP13 (front panel mounting hole size 13mm), SP17 (front panel mounting hole size 17mm) and SP21 (front panel mounting hole size 21mm) series of multi-pin, threaded coupling connectors will provide IP68 integrity when mated ("Ingress of water in quantities causing harmful effects shall not be possible when the product is continuously immersed in water under conditions which shall be agreed between the manufacturer and the user") and will work reliably indoors, outdoors and in harsh UV and hostile wet environments. Generally speaking environmental tests performed during design and qualification of IP68 Connectors are standardised to IP68 at a depth of 2 m and duration of 24 hours. They are widely used for safe control and power connections between equipment where IP68 is critical, e.g. in instrumentation, process control, industrial machinery, automotive, marine and other applications like outdoor lights, LED lights and LED display walls, outdoor security cameras, etc.

Circular connectors

Circular connectors are used primarily for external interfacing. Typical applications include measuring equipment, industrial sensors, industrial equipment and machines, computers and peripherals, medical equipment, and audio and video equipment. A connector will either be male type (with pins or sockets) or female 'receptacle' type (with sockets or pins). Possibilities available with circular connectors include coupling or adapters, cryogenic use, environmental protection, gold plated contacts, hermetic sealing, insulated bodies, locking nuts, underwater use, washdown capability and weatherproofing to IP68. Military (MIL-SPEC) connectors are shell-type connectors built in accordance with military specifications. Their design takes into account the need to protect the connection from environmental factors, allowing them to be used in military and aerospace applications. Parameters to consider when specifying military (MIL-SPEC) connectors include temperature range, the number of contacts, contact type, shell size, shell style or gender, coupling type (generally screw thread or bayonet), contact size (AWG), contact termination options and backshell accessories.

In2Connect offer industry standard, 2 and 3 contact, panel and cable mounting, vibration proof, gasket-sealed screwlock connectors. In2Connect offer forms A, B and C, all of which provide protection to IP 65 per IEC 60529. When correctly assembled with the gaskets and screws which complete the package, this ensures reliable performance when exposed to fluid jets and dust. They conform to DIN EN 175301-803 (formerly DIN 43650).

The three styles: Form A (27.5 x 27.5mm), Form B (28.5 x 21mm), and Form C (15.5 x 15.5mm), have 18 mm,11 mm, and 8 mm contact separations, respectively. Form B is commonly referred to as a "micro" connector, while Form C is often referred to as a "sub-micro." Their black, grey or transparent body mouldings are suitable for ambient temperatures from -40 to + 125ºC and the screw type; snap-inserted, silver plated contacts are rated at 10 Amps max. Uniquely there is a double cable inlet grommet for Form A enabling the same connector to be used for both
PG9 and PG11 cables. Right angled connectors can be purchased factory moulded to PVC or Polyurethane cables, these have solder connections. 1 and 2 metres lengths are standard, other lengths are available on request. ATEX Approved versions are available for Ex II 2GD applications.

M12 X 1 circular connectors of the Sensor Actor Line from CONEC are used to connect a distributor box and a sensor.

The M12 style connector comes with a screw lock, used for low voltage and has between 2 and 8 contacts. Conec M12 connectors are IP67 rated and well suited for wet, moisture-laden environments.

These M12 connectors may also be coded. The common used keyed types are:


A-Coded; used with Sensor Actuators

B-Coded; used with field buses

D-Coded; used with Industrial Ethernet   

X-Coded; used with10 Gbps Ethernet

These connectors can be used to implement a flexible input-output (I/O) or field-bus connection on the circuit board. M12 connectors with D-coding comply with Industrial Ethernet standards (IEC 61067-2-101, Amendment 1). M12 connectors are now recommended for nearly all field-bus specifications, and meet the IP67 protection standards rating (IEC 61076-2-101). They are not intended for use under continuous pressure. In consideration of the broad range of ‘rained on’ definitions, the industry appears to have agreed to a ‘test of immersion for 30 minutes, at a depth of 1 metre, or the equivalent air test at 1.45 psi. That is the Qualification Test. (Protected against the effects of temporary immersion between 15cm and 1metre. Duration of test 30minutes). They are also traditionally used to connect sensors and actuators in automation systems. An expansion (Amendment 1) of the IEC 61076-2-101 standard describes a 4-pole, D-coded variant specified for a higher protective class of Industrial Ethernet applications ~ these requirements correspond to those of a Category-5 modular jack (RJ45) connector, according to the EIA/TIA standard. The D-coding prevents the connector from being confused with the A-coding used for sensor-actuator wiring, or the B-coding used with some field buses. 

ATEX Approved versions are available for Ex II 2GD applications.

Also available are fully hermetic M12 connectors. 

Hermetic M12 connectors from In2Connect are designed to exceed IP68 in an unmated state. These connectors have a wide variety of applications and can be found in most industry sectors, such as transport and instrumentation, for use with proximity switches, sensors and interconnection in harsh environmental conditions. Standard Hermetic connectors are sealed by fusing a single piece glass insert into a machined Stainless Steel Shell. The pin contacts are permanently fused into the insert. To maintain thermal compatability with the glass insert, the contacts are manufactured from a nickel alloy. The protective plating on the pin contacts is electro-deposited gold over nickel. The Jam Nut is supplied with a fluorosilicone rubber O-ring for panel sealing. All In2Connect M12 and M12 hermetic connectors are RoHS compliant. The standard hermetic M12 connector is not designed as a pressure resistant connector even though the inserts are capable of withstanding high pressure differentials. These IP-67 rated connectors allow designers to incorporate data ports in the most challenging harsh environments, such as WiMax, Long Term Evolution (LTE), and Remote Radio Heads using Fibre to the Antenna (FTTA) connectivity. Ideal for communications, security and surveillance equipment applications, the connectors provide increased protection from contamination and moisture in addition to mechanical stability, temperature resistance and vibration immunity. Optical Fibre systems are immune to heavy sources of EMI.

The need to send high-speed data across harsh environments has forced designers to rethink the cabling and connector interfaces they use. With data speeds and data volume pushing the limits of Ethernet, more applications are requiring fibre optics.Until now, there were very few sensible choices of outdoor fibre-optic connectors.

Designated the LC Series, CONEC offers the broadest ODVA-compliant fibre-optic connector portfolio in the industry, providing both full-metal and plastic versions of the IP67-rated interconnects.  CONEC’s extensive ODVA-compliant product portfolio gives customers design flexibility, and ensures that FTTA systems meet telecommunication industry standards as well as harsh environment requirements.  In addition, CONEC can provide cable and plug kit assembly services to deliver a complete FTTA systems interconnect solution.

For enhanced performance, Conec also included a Multi-Mode 50/1µm (300 metre 10GbE - OM3) cable option.

The IP67-rated LC product family features a 1/6th turn bayonet coupling for fast and secure mate/unmate, even with gloved hands. To optimize chemical resistance, UV resistance, and tolerance to physical abuse. We offer these connectors in two different housing materials: black plastic and nickel-plated, zinc die-cast. All connectors are duplex LC type, in single-mode, multi-mode, and APC types.

The product line includes panel-mounted receptacles, mating plugs, and protective caps. Pre-assembled jumper cables including cables suitable for outdoor use and direct burial, in standard lengths from 1 metre to 300 metres are also available.

The IP67 LC connectors ensure a continuously secure connection and are dust proof and weatherproof, with a silicone ring seal that makes a watertight connection to the panel. They are not intended for use under continuous pressure. Cable assemblies are available from In2Connect. According to Wikipedia, a cable harness; also known as a wiring harness, cable assembly, wiring assembly or wiring loom; is a bundle of cables and/or wires used to transmit data/control signals or operating currents. The individual cables are bound together by clamps, cable ties, cable lacing, sleeves, electrical tape, conduit, expandable polystyrene tubing, etc.

Commonly used throughout industry, custom cable assemblies provide several advantages over loose wires and cables. Most aircraft, automobiles and spacecraft will use wire harnesses, to secure and protect wires and cables against the adverse effects of vibrations, abrasions, and moisture. From the most complicated industrial or military electrical/fibre optic hybrid harness to the simplest computer interconnect assembly like RJ45 to RJ45, wiring harnesses optimise space and installation time.

Working with insulating materials like PVC, Polyethylenes, Silicones, ME Fluorocarbons, Polyurethane, TPE, etc. Calmont's performance is unrivalled for applications that require high reliability, small diameter, low noise, chemical resistance or maximum flex life, like:

Medical ~ reusable and disposable cables including optics, lumens, drain tubes for ~ catheters, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, laparoscopy, medical robotics, etc. By definition, disposable cables are intended for one time or limited use. Minimizing cost, while performing its intended function is of primary importance. PVC and PE are the insulations most commonly used. Conductors are generally bare or tinned copper. Shields when needed are spiral or aluminized mylar. These cables may be gamma radiation sterilized. Reusable medical cables are built to endure constant flexing and extended cycles of sterilization. Calmont manufactures cables for robotics applications by extruding specially compounded materials over ultra-fine, high strength alloy, stranded wire. Whether your application requires a unique composite cable consisting of twisted pairs, triads, and coaxial cables, or you simply require ultra flexible hookup wire, Calmont can help. Silicone rubber adds superior chemical resistance, and polyurethane jacketing protects against abrasion, oil, notching, microbes and hydrolysis. Smooth surfaces prevent adhesion to adjacent cables. High Temperature ~ silver or nickel plated conductors, etc. with Tefzel, Teflon PFA and FEP, Silicon rubber and other specialist polymers. Calmont manufactures a variety of cables used to monitor temperature, pressure, motion, position and other characteristics. A wide variety of thermistor, bridge and transducer, and LVDR applications use our cables. Insulation material other than standard insulations are often required in sensor applications because of their unique operating environment. Unusual materials such as Valox®, Ultem®, Siltem®, Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA), Cellulose Acetate, Delrin®, and Lexan® have been utilized to meet demanding customer requirements. These include applications such as vacuum chamber environments, zero halogen requirements, low water absorption requirements and requirements for extreme rigidity.

FluoroFlex - Calmont's precision extrusion techniques combine the superior properties of FEP with the durability of a highly stranded conductor to produce an unequalled product. It is small and lightweight, yet will withstand the severe and repeated flexing that usually destroys other fluorocarbon insulated wires. FluoroFlex is highly versatile and suitable for broad usage in aerospace, computer, and medical electronics. Being chemically inert, FluoroFlex can be used for medical implantation. It has the smallest finished diameter of any of the Calmont high flex products. This is of great importance in aerospace applications. FluoroFlex's excellent dielectric properties also make it ideal for data and audio applications.

SiliFlex - SiliFlex is distinguished by its extreme limpness and flexibility. It is the most limber of all the high flex products offered by Calmont. Silicone rubber insulation compounds are inherently soft and pliable and resist the plastic flow that characterizes many insulation systems. Silicone compounds can be tailored to meet a variety of demands such as extreme high and low temperature requirements, flame resistance, flexibility, radiation resistance, strength and purity. SiliFlex is used extensively for robotic, aerospace and medical applications.

In2Connect can help solve your toughest wire and cable problems. Providing wires and cables designed to operate in a temperature range from -100°C to +1000°C requires a great deal of experience in selecting the most suitable raw materials and cable constructions for the application.

From blast furnaces to cryogenics, we have many years of such experience in high temperature cable.

Wire and cable insulation's commonly employed include: Kapton Polyimide tape, modified silicone rubbers, magnesium oxide, Teflon®, polyurethane, PTFE, mica tapes, TPE, foamed FEP or Tefzel®, thermo-set cross-linked polyolefin etc.

By careful selection of these materials and utilising worldwide industry standards, we aim to keep minimum manufacturing quantities land lead times low.

From single conductor to complex composite thermocouple cables the product mix includes: fixed and flexible wiring cables, furnace/areo engine test bed instrumentation cables and thermocouples, and fire 'critical' circuit cables.

Conductors ~In the UK plating is generally employed on copper or copper alloy conductors to improve resistance to corrosion/oxidisation at high temperature and to assist termination.

Very often it is the plating which will determine the temperature rating of a given cable and the accepted UK 'norms' are:

Tin plated copper continuous   135ºC
Silver plated copper continuous 200ºC
Nickel plated copper continuous 260ºC
Nickel Clad plated copper continuous 260ºC

For cables operating at a high temperature, e.g. 260ºC to 500ºC, Copper/Nickel, Nickel/Chrome (Nichrome) or other suitable high conductivity alloys, or even Grade A Nickel will need to be utilised. Pure Nickel has around 17% the conductivity of electrolytic copper, hence can generally only be used for signal/thermocouple applications. The more common 27% Ni-clad copper conductors (which will ultimately promote long term conductor life in the presence of long term heat and flexing) have circa 70% ~ so cables required to carry LV power at temperatures above 500 degrees C are generally limited to the sort of MICC construction available from your local Electrical Wholesaler.
