Metallurgical Test House and Consultancy

TEi has a comprehensively equipped and UKAS accredited laboratory with a team of highly qualified, trained and experienced metallurgical and technical staff operating to the requirements of an internationally acknowledged quality standard ISO/IEC 17025.

We offer a range of services including:

  • Mechanical Testing
  • Material Identification
  • Corrosion Testing
  • Failure Investigation

Mechanical Testing -Tensile, Impact and Hardness

Ambient, elevated and sub-zero temperature tensile testing to European (BSEN) and American (ASTM) specifications.  Testing can include Yield & Ultimate Strength, Elongation, Reduction of area & Proof testing.  All testing is carried out using a 500kN Servo-hydraulic MAYES machine linked to an INSTRON controller.

Dedicated European and American test machines for cryogenic, ambient and elevated temperature Charpy Impact tests and Universal Test Machines for evaluation of Toughness and fracture properties (ductile and brittle behaviour).

Flexibility, Formality and Fracture properties.

Rockwell, Vickers and rebound hardness test machines for evaluation of hardness properties.

Metallurgical Examinations and Failure Analysis

Using optical microscopes and stereoscopes Micro and Macroscopic examination of materials up to x1000 magnification is available .Scanning Electron Micrsoscopy (SEM) with magnification upto 200,000x and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy are also available for analysis of fracture and microscopic features.

We offer characterisation of:

  • Service failure mechanisms
  • Degradation of microstructure from elevated temperature service and exposure to corrosive environments.
  • Grain size and morphology
  • Phase balance
  • Cleanliness
  • Defect evaluation
  • Coating
  • Thermal treatment evaluation.

Corrosion Testing - G48 and A262

Pitting and Intergranular Corrosion tests can be conducted to measure the stability of materials and fitness for purpose.

We typically test to standards:

Chemical Analysis

We offer chemical composition analysis of all steel alloy and many other metal alloys using Optical Emission Spectrometry (OES).

We offer gas in metal analysis utilising Thermoconduction and Infra-red techniques.

In situ chemical analysis can be carried out using positve Material Identification (PMI) with XRF.

Analysis of debris, corrosion scales and other objects not suitable for the above techniques can be accomodated using our in house SEM and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) Spectroscopy suit.

Heat Treatments

MUFFLE FURNACES are available for heat treatment of test specimens and establishing simulated high temperature service effects on microstructure and physical properties.

We can assist with the optimisation of product heat treatment parameters and determination of hardenability.

Non-Destructive Testing

We offer a raange of NDT solutions including:

  • Radiography
  • MPI
  • DPI
  • Ultrasonics
  • Tube inspections: DINSearch, Iris, Eddy current, Borescope

In Situ Testing

Supplementary to the NDT techniques TEi Metallurgical Services specialises in:

  • Alloy verification and Positive material identification
  • Portable hardness testing using Equotip or Krautkramer MIC10 equipment
  • In-situ metallographic examinations and replication of Microstructure (Thermal degradation and creep cavitation assessments)
