Manufacturing


Novotema continually invests in the latest manufacturing equipment and techniques to deliver the highest quality product. Operating its own in-house tooling department to create the numerous dies and moulds required for manufacturing elastomer seals and components.

The tooling department is fully equipped with high speed CNC milling machines, CNC lathes (4 axes), electrical discharge machine (EDM) and grinding machines. This capability allows responsive prototyping, reduced lead-time for production moulds and greater control to achieve superior mould performance.

Component Design


Component design can be critical to the performance of the elastomer part and the equipment in which it is used.  Novotema’s team of highly skilled elastomer engineers have many years of accumulated knowledge and experience, they are on-hand to provide practical advice on all aspects of elastomer component design to achieve the optimum performance and service life.

Our team of application engineers capture customer requirements and translate these into hardware recommendations and custom rubber component designs using MARC®, which offers three dimensional parametric Computer Aided Design (CAD) capabilities.

When a standard off-the-shelf component is not suitable, Novotema can design and develop a custom rubber component that exactly matches the geometry and operating conditions.

Laboratory Testing


Novotema’s laboratory undertakes research and development, testing and analysis of polymer materials to ensure final components meet customer specifications and requirements.

  • Compound definition – for each new project the correct elastomer compound is identified, if it does not already exist in our extensive database, the laboratory will work closely with our polymer suppliers to define a new compound.
  • Compound control - each batch of compounded material is verified to ensure it conforms to specification before production commences.
  • Process control - laboratory testing of components at various stages of production ensures the highest levels of quality throughout the process.
  • Post-production control – mechanical tests are carried out on the final product to ensure its physical properties meet the specified requirements.

Surface Treatments


Novotema offers a number of surface treatments that can be applied to moulded components which enhance their operating characteristics and performance.

Surface coatings typically lower the friction coefficient of elastomers parts, thereby reducing wear to rubber components used in dynamic applications and reducing the sliding force in reciprocating applications, in addition to increasing protection from chemical attack.

Types of surface treatment:-

  • Plasma coating (PECVD - Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour deposition)
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
  • Chlorination
  • Molybdenum disulphide (Molykote®)
  • Silicone oil

 

Benefits of surface treatments:-

  • Makes initial installation, feeding on automatic machinery and the assembly of equipment easier, the coating acts like a lubricant, reducing the friction coefficient.
  • Improved performance of dynamic sealing components with reduced friction and sticking.
  • Extended life-time of components due to reduced wear and protection from chemical attack.


 

FEA Simulation


Finite Elements Analysis (FEA) is a computer based technique used to analyse engineering applications and sealing components to understand their behaviour under a variety of conditions.This analysis involves Finite Element Modelling (FEM) which is often used for new product design, or to refine an existing product design.

This virtual environment allows Novotema engineers to predict how components will perform in real-life applications.

FEA analysis typically includes:-
