The most cost effective solution to shield against close proximity Ionising radiation is Lead. Measures must be taken to provide a complete ‘envelope’ within the room to prevent radiation emitting to personnel on the outside.

The shielding requirement will be specified by the RPA (Radiation Protection Advisor) The shielding requirement will normally be specified as a “Lead equivalent” (L/E). For example, 2mm L/E.
