Refrigerant Gas R22

Refrigerant Gas R22

Do any of your refrigeration plants use R22?

The Montreal Protocol agreed that some refrigerant gases including CFCs and HCFCs (e.g., R12, R502, R22) were ozone depleting and as such should be phased out globally to help reduce global warming.

The European Union banned all CFC (e.g. R12, R502) from use after 1994. The use of HCFCs (e.g., R22) was banned from use in new equipment from 2000, followed by a ban on use of virgin HCFCs for any purpose after 1st January 2010. Furthermore it will not be permissible to use any R22, even for service work from 2015 onwards.
The vast majority of water chillers manufactured prior to 2000 used R22 as a refrigerant, so from 2015 onwards the systems will become unserviceable as it will be illegal to recharge with the refrigerant within the EU. This will be law under EU Directive 842/2006. The directive also requires any engineers working on a refrigeration system to be REFCOM approved meaning they have a City & Guilds certificate or similar.

F&R Products Ltd are able to offer a solution to this problem; simply replace R22 with a drop-in refrigerant for a fraction of the cost of a new chiller. OK, there is a small price to pay in that these refrigerants are slightly less efficient but many water chillers are oversized duty-wise so there is often capacity to spare.

F&R Products Ltd are Refcom approved and therefore able to service all makes and models of refrigerated water chillers. We offer annual service visits to ensure your compliance with EU Directive 842/2006 or a contract where we visit twice a year to maintain your refrigeration plant and give priority to your company in the event of a breakdown.

If you have any doubts about your site’s compliance please call us on 01823 663 281.

Hyfra Pedia eCHILLY range

Hyfra Pedia eCHILLY range

Hyfra Pedia “eCHILLY” range of smaller packaged water chillers have been redesigned to incorporate the new generation of micro-channel aluminium condensers, enabling the design to be more compact whilst using 60% less refrigerant than its predecessors.

The range as standard now incorporates copper evaporator, volt free alarm signal, low water level switch to stop pump, metal mesh air filter and stainless steel enclosure on painted metal base plus all other features incorporated in the original “CHILLY” range . . . . . and they are less expensive!

Spindle Cooling

F&R Products Hyfra Pedia range of small compact packaged water chillers have proven very popular with machine shops, managers and suppliers alike who require suds oil cooling for their machinery spindles.

The eCHILLY range being particularly versatile in the range of cooling temperatures they can achieve, provides a unique opportunity for a single chiller to satisfy many applications whilst being small in size.

As standard they claim a temperature stability of plus/minus 1°C whilst, if required as an option, stabilities of plus/minus 0.1°C are achievable.

Reliability of F&R Products Ltd's Water Chillers

Reliability of F&R Products Ltd’s Water Chillers

F&R Products Ltd, one of the oldest and most experienced manufacturers of industrial cooling systems in the UK, can trace the design and components in equipment manufactured by themselves, back to 1961.

The oldest known unit built by themselves still in use is an RCU5 built in June 1980 which cools a plastics moulding machine and is regularly serviced by F&R Products Ltd.

With the aid of these comprehensive records it has been possible to replicate designs and duties of equipment made by the company over its 55 years of existence.  The company would be interested in hearing from anyone who has equipment manufactured by F&R that is older than this.

F&R Products Ltd manufacture, sell, service and repair all types of industrial water cooling equipment throughout the UK and Ireland, they are also agents for the Hyfra Pedia range of water chillers.

Winter is coming ¿ check your water cooling systems!

Winter is coming ¿ check your water cooling systems!

Winter is coming – check your water cooling systems!

As the first signs of winter shows itself with the days getting shorter and the mornings colder, it is time to check glycol levels in your water cooling systems.

To prevent that expensive repair or replacement invoice check NOW the glycol levels in your cooler to prevent frost damage.

There are two main types of glycol; Ethylene and Propylene.  Ethylene for systems not associated with food industry and Propylene for systems that may be ingested.

Ideal concentration would be 25% to 30% thus preventing system from freezing in ambients down to minus 10°C to minus 16°C.  Too much glycol will result in reduced cooling duty.
