The original selection of products manufactured by Franke Industrie AG ranged from dying machines for laboratory test for the textiles industry to letter boxes to engine components. One significant milestone was the manufacture of the afterburner (ATAR 09C) for the Mirage fleet of the Swiss Air Force in the 1960s. A few of the first milestones were: combustion chamber for the Goblin 3 engine (in the BEA Vampire fighter jet), afterburner system for Snecma ATAR 09 C (in the Dassault Mirage III fighter jet), and the exhaust pipe Avon 203/207 Hunter. The products required a high level of technical knowledge, not only in the area of manufacturing, but also in metallurgy and process security. In particular the high-quality nickel and cobalt based tools opened up new doors, or rather, new customer segments. This paved the way for the production of hot section components for industrial gas turbines and for aviation and space travel, and the company was able to establish itself as a reliable supplier to well-known OEMs. In 1990 came another important step, with participation in the European Ariane 5 space travel programme. Franke produced, and still produces today, the divergent nozzle of the second stage. In addition, the company is taking part in the Atlas programme with the production of acoustic absorbers for the payload fairing. In 2004 Franke’s industrial engineering branch became its own, stand-alone company: Franke Industrie AG. Franke Industrie AG possesses experience in all areas and processes to do with the manufacture and supply of finished components made from stainless steel, speciality steel and heat-resistant materials, which can be used throughout the entire aviation, space travel and gas turbine industries. The well-founded expertise in the areas of sheet metal production, welding and non-destructive testing methods forms a solid basis for the manufacture of complex components for gas turbines. High combustion temperatures required new technologies; for this reason modern laser drilling units were installed. Hot gas path parts (HGPPs), such as burners, flame tubes, ducts, front elements, thermal shields, metal gaskets, compressor shells and sheaths etc. today constitute some of our most important products.
