Silver-flo™ 55 is a cadmium free silver brazing filler metal. It combines a low brazing temperature with a short melting range. Silver-flo™ 55 is very free flowing and produces neat joints with small fillets. These characteristics make Silver-flo™ 55 an excellent general-purpose silver brazing filler metal. In many countries it is accepted as the best cadmium-free alternative to the low-melting cadmium containing filler metals. For example, it is used as a substitute for alloys such as Easy-flo™ and Easy-flo™ No.2. Joints made with Silver-flo™ 55 are suitable for seawater applications, being resistant to dezincification. The optimum joint gap for this filler metal at brazing temperature is normally 0.05-0.15mm.
Silver-flo™ 40 is a very widely used cadmium free silver brazing filler metal. It offers a combination of medium melting temperature and flow characteristics. It can be used to fill gaps that cannot be tightly controlled. These properties make it a popular choice as an alternative to the higher silver content Silver-flo™ filler metals (Silverflo™ 55 and 56). Silver-flo™ 40 is widely used as a general purpose silver brazing filler metal as well as in joining copper to steel in refrigeration pipe work. It should be noted that this filler metal contains tin and may be described as being ‘hot-short’. It should not be quenched from high temperatures (in excess of 300¿C) and care should be taken when it is used to braze components with widely differing coefficients of thermal expansion as in both cases cracking of the joints may occur. Optimum joint gaps at brazing temperature are 0.075-0.2mm.
Easy-flo™ Flux Powder is Johnson Matthey’s leading brand brazing flux. It is sold widely throughout the world and is recognised
as one of the best flux powders available. It is very fluid at the bottom end of its working range resulting in early and extensive
flux spread. This ensures that the joint surfaces are well protected from oxidation at the earliest possible point of the brazing
operation. This high level of fluidity also helps to reduce flux voids / entrapment in the joint, the low viscosity of the flux aiding its
displacement by the brazing filler metal from the joint gap. Easy-flo™ Flux Powder has a working range of 550-800¿C. It is
suitable for use with silver brazing filler metals melting below 750¿C (such as Silver-flo™, Easy-flo™ and Argo-braze™ filler
Sil-fos™5 is a 5% silver-copper-phosphorus brazing filler metal, which is used to braze copper and copper alloys. When brazing copper the phosphorus within the alloy imparts a metallurgical based self-fluxing capability. When Sil-fos™5 is used to join copper alloys (such as brass, bronze or gun metal) a separate flux will be required because the self-fluxing action only occurs on copper. Sil-fos™5 is extensively used in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat-exchanger components for flux-free brazing of copper pipes and tubes. It is also used for joining copper in electrical engineering applications.
Copper-flo™No.3 is a copper-phosphorus brazing filler metal containing a nominal 6.2% phosphorus and conforming to EN 1044 1999 CP203. It is primarily used for the brazing of copper tubes and pipes in refrigeration and air-conditioning applications and is a popular choice for this type of work. When it is used to braze copper the phosphorus within the alloy imparts a metallurgical based self-fluxing capability. If used to join copper alloys (such as brass, bronze or gun metal) a separate flux will be required because the self-fluxing action only occurs on copper
