Animal Foodstuffs

Animal foodstuffs is commonly known as animal feed and is given to domestic animals (including pets, horses, farmed fish, farm livestock, zoo and circus animals). Animal foodstuff has an influence on the quality of products the animals produce for human consumption and it is, therefore, highly regulated by legislation at European Union (EU) level. The two types of animal foodstuffs include fodder and forage. Fodder is used to describe food which is specifically given to animals, and which they do not have to find themselves - this includes straw, hay, silage, pelleted feeds, oils, grains, legumes and straw. Forage is used to describe foods that animals find themselves, such as cereal, pasture and crop residue. Animal foodstuff is used in the industry of animal husbandry (which is the care and management of farm animals).
