Rugged System

A rugged system is a computer which is designed to operate in harsh conditions and environments. This includes under pressure from strong vibrations, water, dusty conditions or extreme temperature. In a rugged system, it’s not just the external housing that is built for extreme environments but also the internal components and all types of cooling components. Rugged systems are generally used in military vehicle controls, helicopters and UAVs. In each case, the levels of ruggardisation are not standardised but can be measured by a certification like MIL-STD810 or ATEX. Typical industries that use rugged systems include retail, public safety, field sales, healthcare, retail, transportation, distribution, manufacturing, and military. They are also widely used in agriculture and in outdoor recreation.
