Solid State Lighting

Solid-state lighting (SSL) is a specific type of lighting that uses alternatives to electrical filaments, gas or plasma to provide illumination. SSL uses a semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs), organic light emitting diodes (OLED) or polymer light emitting diodes (PLED). All SSL provides visible light but with less energy and heat generation than other light sources. The light is created by an electric current passing through a special semiconductor diode which causes the material to glow and emit light. The main advantage of SSL is how energy efficient they are compared to incandescent bulbs as well as having a life span of around 20 times the lifespan of a compact fluorescent light bulb. Due to these advantages, SSL has many uses and are being utilised across a variety of industries and within the home. SSL is used in traffic lights, vehicle lights, street lighting, cameras and torches and are now a popular choice within the entertainment lighting industry.
