Laboratory Safety Clothing

Safety clothing or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is designed to protect the wearer from health and safety risks during the activity they are undertaking. These hazards include chemicals, extreme temperature, excessive noise and physical risks such as falling or being struck by moving vehicles. In the health and safety hierarchy of controls, PPE is the last option to be used meaning it is not possible to remove, replace, isolate or change the hazard. PPE includes a wide range of items such as safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, fire retardant clothing and safety footwear. In a work environment, it is the employer's responsibility to provide the safety clothing and the employees' responsibility to wear it for the purpose it was intended. Safety clothing is essential wherever there is a health or safety risk to the individual carrying out the task where the hazard cannot be removed. Any industry which carries out these tasks will need safety clothing therefore, it is widely used in many environments such as factories, utility companies and farms and in the construction and medical industries.
