Masks and Respirators

The primary use of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is to protect the user from inhaling harmful/toxic fumes, vapors, particles, dust or gases that exist in their environment. These pieces of equipment, when used correctly, can help protect against serious life limiting or deadly conditions. These range from reusable respirators to disposable dust masks. Respirators will fall into one of two categories, either air-purifying which works by forcing the air through a filter or air-supplied where a supply of fresh air is provided. Dust masks are one of the most common forms of air-purifying respirators and are inexpensive and relatively simple to use. Escape only respirators and hoods are also examples of air-purifying respirators. Self-contained breathing apparatus such as those used in escape sets or rebreathers use air supplied respirators. All respirators must have the mark CE to show that the design has been tested to a recognised standard, they should also be marked to show the relevant standard for that specific mask. Respirators are potentially lifesaving pieces of equipment and are used by the emergency services and across such industries as construction, agriculture and utility companies. They also used in domestic situations.
