Synthetic Rubbers

Synthetic rubbers are polymers that are synthesised from petroleum by-products. Of the 15 billion kilogrammes of synthetic rubber produced each year, almost two-thirds are synthetic as opposed to natural. The expansion of the motor industry created a need for the production of rubber on a large scale, that the global supply of natural rubber couldn’t fulfil. There is a range of synthetic rubbers used in industry for the production of products. Viton is used in the production of chemical resistant gloves and other extruded goods, Neoprene is used in a variety of applications including electrical insulation and automotive fan belts and Hypalon which is used to make inflatable boats, folding kayaks and in roofing materials. The primary use of synthetic rubber was in the automotive industry in the production of tyres, but it’s also used to produce hoses, matting, belts, door and window profiles and flooring. Synthetic rubber is also used to produce building materials, hospital and lab equipment, boating equipment and in textile printing, where it's known as rubber paste.
