Acetylene

The industrial gas Acetylene is a hydrocarbon and the simplest alkyne. It’s manufactured by reacting calcium carbide with water. It's a colourless, odourless gas in its pure form but commercial grades usually have an odour due to impurities from the production process. Acetylene is one of the hottest and most efficient fuel gases on the market, and is available in a variety of purities and packaging, depending on the intended application. Acetylene has many heating applications in industry such as brazing, flame hardening, flame cleaning, profile-cutting, branding wooden pallets, and it’s also the only fuel gas that can be used to weld steel. As well as its role as a fuel gas, acetylene is also used to produce certain plastics and chemicals and plays a role in organic and chemical synthesis.
