Dyes and Pigments

A dye is a coloured substance that has an affinity to the substrate to which it is being applied, while a pigment is a material that changes the colour of reflected or transmitted light. Both dyes and pigments are coloured because they absorb some wavelengths of light more than others Types of dyes and pigments include acid dyes, basic dyes, mordant dyes, vat dyes, reactive dyes, disperse dyes, azonic dyes, and sulphur dyes. They are usually categorised into natural and synthetic. Lots of materials can be dyed or absorb wavelengths of light – including paint, ink, plastic, fabric, cosmetics, and food.
