External Retaining Rings

External retaining rings work in exactly the same way as other types of retaining rings, working as a shoulder to bear loads and positioning and holding mechanical parts in place. Whereas internal retaining rings are fitted inside a housing or cylindrical bore, pushing outwards, external retaining rings are placed around the shaft, exerting pressure from the outside. External retaining rings are available in various sizes and types. They are an efficient and cost-effective alternative to several other types of fasteners, such as bolts, nuts, washers and cotter pins. External retaining rings require only a minimal amount of surface preparation to the shaft. They can be used widely in a variety of applications such as pneumatic assembly and gear assembly.
