Fabric Ribbons

Since the invention of typewriter, various fabrics and chemical compounds have been used for making ribbons. In the early days of typewriter, mainly silk, cotton and wool was used primarily and in 20th century Nylon and Rayon were also added to this list. But the performance of fabric ribbons such as cotton and silk has been far better and due to this reason, they remain the preferred choice of most professionals. Obviously, ink holding capacity of each material varies from another one and until very recently silk ribbons displayed the best quality and had very long life. Indeed, some typewriter ribbons made of silk were noticed to work even after 10 years or more of typing. With the recent increase in price of silk, fabric ribbons have become a rarity but are still loved by all typists of their salt.
