Zoom Lenses

Zoom lenses have the ability to vary the focal length, and therefore the angle of view as opposed to a fixed focal length lens. A true zoom lens, also called a parfocal lens, is one that maintains focus when its focal length changes. A lens that loses focus during zooming is more properly called a varifocal lens. Varifocal zoom lenses are convenient, cost effective, and useful for a range of applications meaning you do not need to purchase a number of different lenses. They are more complex than fixed focal lenses and are also heavier and larger, with some compromise on image quality and loss of resolution at the extreme end of their focal range, so these factors need to be taken into account when choosing a varifocal zoom lens. Parfocal lenses offer a superior image resolution even when zooming but are higher in price.
