Absolute Encoders

Absolute encoders, also known as absolute shaft encoders and shaft angle encoders, are electro-mechanical devices that indicate angular positions. However, they are also able to convert linear movements into rotary movements. For example, by a belt, pinion or winch. Absolute encoders create a digitally encoded signal that is unique to each measured increment. Even if there is a malfunction or power failure, the position can still be read accurately. The two main types of absolute encoders are single-turn absolute encoders and multi-turn absolute encoders. Both types are available in shafted or hollow shaft designs. With a variety of different interfaces available and the crucial benefit that all absolute encoders will remember a position, it makes them useful throughout the industry as an accurate way of measuring position rather than relative movement.
