Modems
A modem is a network hardware device that enables a computer to transmit data via, for example, telephone or cable lines. Computer information is stored digitally, but when it is transferred via a telephone line it is transmitted into analogue, it is the modem that converts between these two forms. Modems, short for modulator-demodulator, are distinguished by their build and where the processing takes place (i.e. the modem itself or the PC). If the processing takes place in the modem it is called a hardware ”controller-based” modem, this type of modem has the best power and performance. If the processing takes place in the PC, the modem is a Controllerless or Winmodems modem. There is a third option, a Softmodems which is a Software Modem and relies on the PC to do all the work. Modems are essential for anyone who uses their computer or phone to send and share information – be it for business or pleasure.
