Optical fiber

Optical fibres transmit light between two ends of the fibre and are widely used in fiber-optics communication where they are much more superior than wire (copper) cables in transmitting over longer distances at higher bandwidths. It’s not just speed that makes optical fibres so efficient, but also their resistance to outside noise like radios and motors. On top of this, specially designed fibres are also used for a variety of other applications, like fiber optic sensors and lasers. There are three types of fibre optic cable commonly used and these are single mode, multimode and plastic optical fibre (POF). Optical fibres span the long distances between local phone systems and provide the backbone for many network systems. Other users of optical fibre include cable television services, university campuses, office buildings, industrial plants, and electric utility companies.
