Interior Designers

Working in interior design requires architectural knowledge, good project management skills and above all, a focus and aptitude for creative design. Interior designers will often start with a blank canvas, developing and agreeing ideas with the client that fit their requirements and those of the end users of a room or building, to design attractive and welcoming internal spaces. Their role may involve working with architects and structural engineers to suggest structural alterations that improve the efficient and functional use of the space. The interior designer may draw up detailed plans, often using computer-aided design (CAD) software; and will work with a team of designers to implement the agreed design. They will employ colour schemes and lighting that are appropriate for the use of the space in question. Attention to detail is required in sourcing and selecting furnishings, fixtures and fittings that are both functional and aesthetic, and blend well with the overall vision. Interior designers may work in a wide range of internal spaces, including domestic, commercial and leisure settings. Where they operate primarily in individuals’ residential properties, they may be focused more on appearance than on structural alteration.
