Linemen are electricians who are involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of high voltage power lines and distribution systems that deliver electricity from the generating source to end users. As well as handling such electric power transmission and distribution systems, they may also install and maintain telephone, cable television and fibre optic lines. They may also be known as linesmen, powerline technicians, electrical lineworkers or electrical distribution workers. While electrician is the term used to describe tradesmen who deal with electrical wiring within buildings, power linemen’s work is largely outdoors. The duties involved often involve working at height with live power lines, so health and safety and PPE (personal protective equipment) wear is vital to avoid electrocution. The energy supply, telecommunications and cable and engineering industries all have need of linemen on a permanent or temporary basis.
