Management Consulting is the practice of trying to help organisations to improve performance. To do this, the business consultant analyses existing organisational problems and the development of plans for improvement. The two main reasons for a management consulting service are to gain expertise that is missing in-house or to gain a third party, ‘outside’ perspective. In addition to this, management consultants are usually aware of industry ‘best practices’ and can transfer this knowledge from one industry to another. The biggest management consultant companies are Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC), Ernst and Young (EY) and KPMG. The most common areas of management consultancy are Strategic management, Operations management, Industrial Engineering, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Industrial Psychology, Organizational Psychology, Organisational Development and Project Management.
