Coastal Engineering

Coastal Engineering is a sub-division of the civil engineering profession and it deals with constructions in the coastal areas and studies activities on the shorelines. A coastal engineer helps plan and implement structures to prevent damage caused by floods, manages pollution in nearby marine areas and generally deals with improving and developing coastal areas. Storms and severe rain can sometimes cause damage to buildings and the environment, a coastal engineer will look at the structure of these buildings and look at the environment and put in place defences to preserve the coastal shorelines. Coastal engineers also help with dredging to keep a secure and safe route for vessels entering or leaving harbours. It is essential for our coasts and shorelines to be protected and the coastal engineer is vital to this. Due to the ever-changing weather and the shift in the climate, it is more important than ever to ensure our coastal property and environment is protected against damages caused by storms, floods and natural erosion from the sea waves, as well as harmful pollution to the wildlife within these areas. Coastal Engineers deal with these issues and implement defences to protect against harmful and sometimes irreversible damage caused by nature.
