Compression Testing

Compression testing is a frequently used tool across many industries. It is designed to establish the behaviour of the material being tested when placed under a load. The results of compression tests might include data on the compressive force or crush resistance of a particular material; as well as its ability to recover after a specific compressive force is applied and/ or held over a defined time period. Compression testing may be extended to the point at which the material breaks; or may be done to a predefined limit. Data is gathered as the material is depressed and begins to deform; and the results are plotted as a stress-strain graph. This can inform on the elastic limit, proportional limit, yield point, yield strength and (for some materials) the compressive strength. Concrete, metals, plastics, ceramics, composites and cardboards might all be subjected to compression testing to ensure that the material in question is fit for purpose when applied in a particular way. Compression testing is used across a range of industries including the aerospace and automotive, construction, cosmetics, electrical and electronic, medical device, packaging and paper and board industries, amongst others.
