CMM and CNC Machining

Get CMM & CNC Machining All In One – Conduct Quality Control Before Production Starts – Save Time & Increase Throughput!

Manufacturers employing CMM face a bottleneck problem. That’s because CNC machines outpace CMM. In the time it takes the CMM to the collect metrology data needed to verify the quality of a given part, the CNC machine may have already produced several more parts. And if the part turns out to be out of spec, chances are the manufacturer is now stuck with a whole batch of worthless parts.

But, DATRON CNC machines have CMM capability built in. By virtue of our optional Z-Surface Probe or the Renishaw TP20 6-way, kinematic, touch-trigger probe system, the manufacturer gains the ability to perform production and quality control on one machine without ever moving the part. In fact, in a shorter period of time they can perform quality control twice – once before the machining starts and again after the machining is completed.

Here’s how it works. The operator sets up the blank (or a batch of blanks) on the machining table. The integrated probe, mounted beside the machining spindle, pneumatically extends to scan the blank. At this time, the first instance of quality control takes place – stock size is automatically (without operator intervention) checked to verify that it is suitable for the job at hand and any irregularities in surface topography are compensated for dynamically. This is done when the scanning data is fed into the control software and the machining parameters are adjusted to account for variance in the surface topography.

Now the machining begins. DATRON CNC machines can mill, drill, rout, thread mill and engrave at ultra high speeds with maximum feeds of 1,000 inches per minute. The shear speed of our 60,000 RPM spindle evacuates chips, and the heat associated with them, from the cutting channel. This results in lower machining forces and less vibration – which facilitates high feed rates and improves the quality of the cut and surface finish.

When the part is completed, the probe extends for the second round of quality control and takes on the role of a true CMM. This time it scans in the X, Y, and Z co-ordinates, finds hole centers and bosses, measures critical elements and feeds collected data into ISO 9000 information chain.

Dental implants to replace natural teeth provide a means of comfortable chewing and a means of minimizing bone loss. Often abutments are fixed to the jawbone with a metal bone screw. Ethanol Coolant Eliminates The Need for Bathing Finished Parts in Environmentally-Dangerous 'Trike' (trichloroethylene)-based Solvents:

Ethanol is a form of alcohol that results naturally through the sugar fermentation process and is environmentally friendly. It also happens to be an ideal coolant for high-speed, micro machining because a thinner-than-water viscosity allows the ethanol to quickly cover and cool more surface area on fast-moving micro tooling. The low evaporation point of ethanol makes it an efficient cooling solution and also eliminates the need for disposal and recycling, as well as their associated costs. UID Marking

The UID or Unique IDentification program is a mandate by the Department of Defense (DOD) that calls for specified “tangible assets” to be marked so that they can be tracked through their “useful” life. Therefore, there has been a rise in the need for marked tags and nameplates made from metals and plastics.

Success In Engraving Nameplates and Signage

Conventional engraving for signage can be performed by any one of four basic methods – all of which result in the removal of material from the surface of a workpiece. This page outlines each of the three engraving methods, common materials and the technology available for increasing efficiency and quality of the end product.

The pantograph is a manually operated machine that removes material using a rotating tool or diamond scribe. The tool is connected by levers to a stylus that is moved manually by the operator. The operator uses the stylus to trace a template of each letter. Because the tool follows the motion of the stylus, each letter must be precisely positioned to reflect the actual layout of the work. While pantographs are still used widely to engrave small plates at shopping mall stores like Things Remembered, they are generally considered an inefficient and outdated technology for industrial or 3D engraving. This is because the process requires and operator who is tied to the machine for the duration of the process. Not only is this costly in terms of labor, but the quality of the end product is dependant upon the skill and experience of an individual operator and may vary from shift to shift or part to part. Skilled pantograph operators are truly craftsmen of a dying art form. As a result, it is becoming increasingly hard for manufacturers to find qualified operators – and what they may save on the cost of equipment is usually offset by the cost of labor. Additionally, since the process is extremely taxing from a physical and ergonomic standpoint, employers are vulnerable to the added costs of workman’s compensation or disability.

Rapid prototyping is the name given to a host of related technologies that are used to fabricate physical objects directly from CAD data sources. With DATRON machines, parts made through rapid prototyping may be used directly in many final applications. Rapid prototyping-generated parts may well offer a direct solution to application problems having material requirements ranging from plastics and graphite, to aluminum and other non-ferrous metals.

For Rapid Prototyping, PrimCAM’s comprehensive and user-friendly interface allows novice and experienced users to to get the results they want in just minutes. PrimCAM’s short learning curve and powerful features make it the suitable CAD software for use on the production floor as well as in the design office. Whether you need to design parts in the included CAD package or convert CAD files, PrimCAM is the software of choice for 2½ D applications. PrimCAM is an icon driven, intuitive tool path generator for CNC controlled machining centers. The intention of PrimCAM is to offer a very user-friendly interface. PrimCAM features an integrated CAD package with no external CAD software necessary and the user can import various file formats such as .dxf and .bmp files. Primcam includes an integrated database for the management of tools, materials, cutting feed rate tables, machine controls and more. This allows for automatic control of RPM and feed rates from the material and tools chosen. Tool path calculations change with any CAD geometry alterations. A part library management system allows the user to pick and place standard or common tool path profiles. PrimCAM also contains a graphic simulator, where NC programs can be emulated and provides a manufacturing time calculation. Primcam is Windows 9X, NT, and 2000 compatible.

CNC Machines for Rapid Prototyping:

While DATRON milling and engraving machines are ideal for 24/7/365 industrial manufacturing, there are physical characteristics that lend themselves to rapid prototyping. R&D groups are generally operating in more of an office environment than on a plant floor. So, Datron’s small footprint and quite, fully-enclosed machining area really fits the bill. That said, once engineers have developed a part on the DATRON machine, they can begin manufacturing it immediately – because the same equipment that produces the prototype is rugged enough to run parts (even in batches) virtually non-stop.

Adapter Collets

The limit stop rings are used to fasten the tools shafts in the automatic tool change. To push the rings on the 6 mm and 8 mm shanks we recommend the DATRON insertion tool.
