DMS technologies

At DMS technologies we understand the difficulties of working with power in the field. Man-portable equipment is only helpful if it is usable. We will work with you to discuss, for example, what weight is acceptable, carrying arrangements and if the equipment can be housed within a trolley style case. With our extensive experience of extreme environments, we can also work with you on suitable handles, connectors and leads. The packs can be smaller with a link cable to increase overall capacity, giving the same or better performance in units which are easier to handle. Cables can be designed to store in the case, either in a recess or, where required, in a lid mounted pocket. Cases can be stackable to aid both transportation and space reduction. We are able to offer various re-charging solutions compatible with the application which can include, for example, a combination of mains voltage, on-board vehicle and photovoltaic systems.

Varley Red Top & Varley Lithium Batteries at the LAA Rally Sywell with Wessex Light Aircraft.
    September 2015

The LAA Rally at Sywell proved to be an excellent opportunity to introduce to the light aircraft and microlight community Wessex Light Aircraft as a distributor for the Varley Red Top and Varley Lithium ranges of 12V batteries. The Varley Red Top 8, 15 and 20 sealed lead acid versions have been used in light aircraft and microlights for many years, but with the increasing demand for lighter weight smaller batteries DMS technologies has introduced a range of lithium ferrous phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries. Before introducing the new batteries to the aviation market we carried out tests with a range of motorsport users, on both 4 and 2 wheels. Furthermore, technical staff from both the LAA and the BMAA visited DMS technologies’ premises in Romsey, Hampshire, where they gained first-hand knowledge of the company’s design and manufacturing capabilities. This also gave the LAA and BMAA engineers the opportunity to discuss technical aspects of the new batteries. The new lithium batteries, all nominal 12V, are available in 3 capacities 2.4Ah (Li-3), 5.5Ah (Li-5) and 16.1Ah (Li-16) and weigh 0.5kg, 1.1kg and 3.2kg respectively. The Li-5 is proving to be the most popular model capable of starting engines up to 180hp and ideal for engines such as the D-Motor and Rotax 912”. Designed originally with motorsport in mind great attention was paid to minimising the effect of shock and vibration as well as ensuring the optimal power transfer to the terminals. The LiFePO₄ is also an intrinsically safer chemistry with improved safety compared to other lithium options. 8. Working with MWC Communications
    28 October 2019

The Client MWC Communications is an organisation focussed on providing reliable connectivity wherever, whenever. Whether for a permanent network solution, a construction site or other remote location, or even a fleet of vehicles that need on-board connectivity, MWC specialises in providing the solution. Opportunity MWC Communications’ objective is to deliver instant internet access anywhere. The team already had a range of hardware that could be installed on site to provide connectivity, however this requires power and, often, an installation team. What they needed was a quick, portable solution that was easy to setup and could be in place for maybe two hours to a few months. MWC engineers were familiar with Peli products for storing and transferring equipment. They understood that they could, with some design change, keep the connectivity equipment in such a case but with the additional benefit of a “Plug & Play” facility. Another issue they were faced with was how to integrate a battery that allowed the units to be truly operational anytime, anywhere. Furthermore, the unit had to be easily transportable internationally. Solution DMS technologies was approached due our expertise in integrating custom design batteries into portable rugged cased systems. A housing was designed to secure the connectivity equipment within the case, wired to provide both internal and external connection points. With various DC voltages required, a suitable PSU along with DC/DC converters were installed for both mains and battery operation. www.dmstech.co.uk There are currently 3 models in the range, each with a mix of connections including LAN Power over Ethernet (PoE), cellular, WiFi, LAN & WAN depending on the model. For the ‘Classic’ and ‘Maxi’ models continuous operation was specified even when powered by batteries alone. Therefore two battery packs were designed Incorporating a hot-swap capability, discharging consecutively instead of concurrently to maximise runtime. While lightweight batteries were specified, the use of lithium was discounted due to the transportation issues of batteries above 100Whr. Instead, the use of high capacity NiMH cells was recommended, balancing weight and energy density with simple transportation requirements. Battery features (HD4 Maxi) • 2 off 24V 9Ah NiMH batteries • 30 hrs run-time in normal operation • “Push-to-test” state of charge • Hot-swappable without connectivity interruption • 16hr recharge time from fully discharged batteries

  9. DMS technologies now supplies the Ultralife range of Deep Cycle Lithium batteries
    28 October 2019

We have recently taken on a range of batteries manufactured by Ultralife, these are 12V lithium (LiFePO4) batteries that offer a direct, drop in replacement to standard lead acid batteries. On a like-for-like basis these new batteries will give significant weight savings without the need to make adjustments to equipment. But what might prove to be the most important benefit is that lithium will last significantly longer than conventional lead acid batteries used in industrial installations, up to 10 times longer in certain applications. Furthermore, an existing lead acid battery charger can be used to re-charge these new lithium batteries in a much quicker re-charge time than conventional lead acid types. It is the internal battery management system that allows these batteries to be used as a drop in replacement alternative to AGM or GEL batteries. The integrated management system monitors the current, voltage and temperature of the battery and the cells. When the battery is used outside of the recommended operating parameters it will react and isolate the battery from the system maintaining safety. When the source of the error is removed the system resets so that the battery can be used again. LiFePO4 is also an intrinsically safer chemistry with improved safety compared to other lithium options. 10. Life Expectancy of Auxiliary Batteries for Ambulances
    28 October 2019

As the UK supplier of Lifeline batteries into ambulances services we recently undertook investigations with a leading and top performing service regarding their performance. We found that the Lifeline GPL-31T batteries last a minimum of 3 years between replacements. We know that ambulances are tough applications for batteries – unpredictable discharge and charge regimes are the norm with paramedics understandably concerned with other issues around battery care. According to David Claxton, DMS technologies’ Marketing Manager “We specialise in batteries for tough and extreme environments and, although not unexpected, even we were a little surprised by the strong performance of the Lifeline product in such a demanding and essential application”. 3 year performance means that the services using Lifeline only actually change the batteries once. They are installed by the converter, replaced 3+ years later, and then recycled when the vehicle reaches end of life at around 6 years. If your batteries aren’t lasting 3 years then please get in touch on 01794 525400. We know that in the public sector a balance between CAPEX and OPEX is key and believe Lifeline can really deliver cost savings.
