  1. Small, Fast and Temperature Stable Thermal Circuit Breakers With Hot Wire Principle

    Thermal circuit breakersare ideal for protecting loads against overcurrent. However, bimetals reach their limits in applications requiring a very fast thermal disconnection. There is a solution for these applications: E-T-A's 1410 circuit breaker with hot wire principle.

    The trip time of thermal circuit breakers depends on the level and duration of the overcurrent and the ambient temperature. Therefore, they only provide a delayed disconnection compared to magnetic circuit breakers, i.e. in case of small overcurrents, it takes notably longer until the faulty circuit is disconnected. This makes thermal circuit breakers the ideal protection device for loads such as motors, transformers and supply lines, as they can handle short, non-hazardous overcurrents without being damaged. If the overcurrent continues for too long, the circuit breaker reliably trips. This helps prevent undesired early or nuisance tripping. The delay also ensures that high current peaks of motors, transformers or magnetic valves do not lead to a disconnection.

    BIMETAL, FUSIBLE AND HOT WIRE PRINCIPLE

    The bimetal is the conventional trip element in thermal circuit breakers. Complementing bimetals, also fusibles, hot band or hot wire tripping elements are used. Hot wire tripping elements are very effective as they help realize thermal circuit breakers with very fast trip curves. Additionally, they are temperature-insensitive due to their high operating temperature of about 300 °C.

    THE 1410 WITH HOT WIRE PRINCIPLE

    E-T-A's 1410 series are single pole, thermal circuit breakers with current ratings up to 10 A, for AC 240 V and DC 28 V rated voltages. The tripping element is a bistable hot wire element providing a fast and precise trip curve in the event of an overcurrent. All five 1410 versions are hardly bigger than a sugar cube. This means that they can be easily installed even in applications with small space requirements.

  5. E-T-A introduces a low-cost CAN-bus controlled decentralised electrical power distribution system

    E-T-A Circuit Breakers has introduced a new, simplified, low-cost, decentralised electrical power distribution system, each module offering up to 10 outputs rated up to 8A/10A per channel. E-T-A PowerPlex Compact provides localised monitoring, control and reliable protection of safety-critical electrical circuits, at the same time offering reduced cabling costs and build time. Communication with the PowerPlex modules is via CAN-bus using SAE J1939 based protocols. Each localised module will handle up to 60A, providing programmable control based on up to 12 digital and 3 analogue inputs as well as programmable overload protection.
    Currently available as a 12V DC version, E-T-A PowerPlex Compact is straightforward to install and can be used for applications such as battery monitoring of split charging circuits, undervoltage monitoring and control, remote operations based on level and flow sensors, responding to limit switches in tail lifts, dimming of lights and for timed controls. It will switch loads and protect them and the electrical harness against overcurrent and short circuits. Featuring high-end power semiconductors with integral protective elements for switching and protection, there are no mechanical components such as relays which may be subject to wear, vibration and shock.
    One or more PowerPlex modules are positioned as required around a vehicle to facilitate the local connection of loads, switches and sensors. Each module can collect sensor data from level and temperature sensors, for example. E-T-A PowerPlex is an open system featuring two CAN-bus communication channels which enable control via an E-T-A touch panel or keypad(s), if required, to enable load switching, and monitoring and display of data from analogue and digital sensors.
    The initial programming of each module via a cable linked PC is straightforward, using configuration software supplied with the product. It enables, for example, the linking of inputs and outputs, programming of timer functions and activation of dimmers. The current ratings for overcurrent protection of the load circuits and time characteristics can also be programmed.

  6. New compact E-T-A plug-in type circuit breaker optimises overcurrent protection and power distribution

    Thermal-magnetic circuit breaker for automation in industrial applications and buildings

    E-T-A Circuit Breakers, quality designer and manufacturer of a broad range of electro-mechanical and electronic products for circuit protection, has introduced a new compact thermal-magnetic circuit breaker type 2216-S, increasing its plug-in mounting product range for automation in industrial and buildings applications. The single or double pole E-T-A 2216-S enables cost-effective integration of protection against overcurrent in a control cabinet or in a local area.
    With an overall width of 12.5mm and a depth of only 70mm, the type 2216-S occupies very little space in the control cabinet. The new circuit breaker has specifically been designed for side-by-side, snap-in installation in new E-T-A rail-mountable sockets - the 80plus (with screwless PT connecting terminals) or the 81plus (with screw terminals). The sockets allow time-saving power distribution and signalling by means of plug-in type jumpers. In addition, coding pins ensure ease of allocation between breaker and socket according to the “lock-and-key principle”. The dimensions of type 2216-S with socket meet the requirements of the DIN 43880 standard (built-in equipment for electrical installation).

    Three characteristic curves for perfect adjustment to loads and lines

    The single or double pole circuit breakers E-T-A 2216-S are available in different current ratings from 0.5A to 16A. Auxiliary contacts are optionally available (change-over contacts) for initiating alarm circuits and subsequent switching operations or for status indication of the main contact. Type 2216-S has been designed for voltages up to 240 V AC and for up to 50 V DC (single pole version) or 80 V DC (2 pole version). Three different trip curves are available, allowing perfect adjustment to the load and line requirements. The instantaneous F1 curve for DC circuits corresponds to the standard A characteristic of circuit breakers. The fast trip curve F2 and the medium delay curve M1 are suitable for both AC and DC applications. The F2 curve corresponds to trip characteristic B and the M1 curve corresponds to the C characteristic to IEC/EN 60898/1 (DIN VDE 0641-11). The new circuit breaker type 2216-S will carry approvals to IEC EN 60934, UL 1077 and UL 508 and is therefore suitable for international use.

  8. E-T-A offers innovative ‘push-in’ terminal block technology

    E-T-A Circuit Breakers, quality designer and manufacturer of a broad range of electro-mechanical and electronic products for circuit protection, has extended its range of terminal blocks with the sockets 80plus, for direct line insertion without tools, and the 81plus. Both can be populated selectively with the pluggable E-T-A thermal-magnetic circuit breaker 2216-S or with the pluggable E-T-A electronic circuit overcurrent protector REF16-S. The new one-way and side-by-side mountable sockets offer a space-saving overall width of just 12.5mm and can easily be snapped onto a DIN rail.

    The new E-T-A 80plus is the first socket made by E-T-A with ‘push-in’ technology for direct line insertion. This means that rigid, flexible or compressed wires can be pushed directly into the terminals without any additional tools. The new socket type 80plus has a 6mm² supply terminal, two 4mm² load output terminals and three 1.5mm² signalling terminals.

    For the new E-T-A 81plus, all terminals are fitted with screw terminals for multi-lead connection: the screw head taking a standard or Phillips screwdriver. The clamps are made of top quality copper alloys ensuring maximum contact forces in minimum space. The type 81plus has a 10mm² supply terminal, a 10mm² load output terminal and three 2.5mm² signalling terminals.

    For both types, plug-in type jumpers allow time-saving power distribution and signalling. In addition, so-called coding pins allow customer coding of the current rating of each of the slots: devices with higher current ratings can no longer erroneously be inserted, so that any hazards caused by wrong current ratings are excluded. An integral retaining clip ensures a tight and reliable fit in the socket even under harsh shock and vibration conditions.

    The new plug-in type 80plus can be combined with the new type 81plus with screw terminals: for instance, the 81plus can be used as a supply terminal while socket 80plus is used for power and signal distribution. Accessories are identical. Both new E-T-A sockets have been designed for voltages up to AC 277 V and DC 80 V.

    Once the sockets have been installed, the E-T-A types 2216-S and REF16-S can easily be plugged in. The single or double pole E-T-A 2216-S enables cost-effective integration of protection against overcurrent in a control cabinet or in a local area for automation in industrial and buildings applications. The REF 16-S provides selective protection for 24V DC load circuits powered by switch-mode power supplies, offering a combination of active electronic current limitation in the event of a short circuit and overload disconnection at typically 1.25 times rated current.

    Even the exchange of devices, e.g. when a higher current rating is required before the system is brought into service, is straight forward thanks to the E-T-A plug-in design: simply by pulling the device out of the socket and putting in the new circuit breaker. This can really save time for many users, all the more so as the devices feature hot-swap capability allowing them to be exchanged when the system is live.

  9. E-T-A electronic circuit protectors now ATEX approved

    E-T-A Circuit Breakers, quality designer and manufacturer of a broad range of electro- mechanical and electronic products for circuit protection, has now obtained ATEX approval for special versions of its ESX10 and ESX10-T electronic overcurrent protection products for automation applications. Designed to reduce costly downtime and danger to personnel on production lines, the ESX10 can be plugged directly into an E-T-A Module 17plus power distribution socket which is mountable on a DIN/EN rail, while the ESX10-T is for direct rail mounting. The ATEX-approved 3G category of ESX10 and ESX10-T are intended for the use in Ex zone 2, making them particularly useful for applications in process control in the chemical, petroleum and gas industries.The compact E-T-A ESX10 and ESX10-T Electronic Circuit Breakers are just 12.5mm wide and both provide electronic overcurrent protection for 24V DC (and 12V DC ESX10-T only) control circuits with load currents from 0.5A to 12A. In the event of overload or a short circuit, the faulty load will be disconnected electronically by means of a mosfet in the output circuit of the protector. They provide the best possible protection for loads, such as controls, sensors, transformers and solenoid valves, which are fed by switch-mode power supplies or battery-buffered power supplies.The E-T-A ESX10/ESX10-T provide active current limitation to 1.8 or 1.5 times its rated current. This allows capacitive loads of up to 20,000μF or lamp loads to be switched on without affecting other loads on the power supply. At the same time, this electronic active current limitation responds much faster to overload or short circuit conditions than switch-mode power supplies: it will shutdown electronically a single faulty output, while allowing all other load circuits connected to the same SMPS to continue working as normal.

     
    Status indication is provided by a multicolour LED plus an integral short-circuit proof status output or potential-free signal contact. In the event of an overload or short circuit, the load circuit may be re-activated by a manual ON/OFF button, or, as an option, electronically via a re-set input. The ON/OFF button also allows manual disconnection when starting up a system or during maintenance.

  10. E-T-A electronic circuit protector saves space and installation time

    E-T-A Circuit Breakers, quality designer and manufacturer of a broad range of electro- mechanical and electronic products for circuit protection, has introduced a new electronic circuit protector providing active current limitation for selective protection of load circuits powered by 24V DC power supplies in industrial and building automation applications. The new E-T-A REF 16-S is a single pole overcurrent circuit protector with a purely electronic trip characteristic taking up just 12.5mm width in a control cabinet. Like the recently introduced E-T-A 2216 it fits the E-T-A 80plus and 81plus sockets, reducing wiring and installation time. Type REF16-S allows a cost-optimised integration of overcurrent protection into a compact decentralised control cabinet.

    Like the recently introduced E-T-A 2216, the E-T-A REF16-S has specifically been designed for side-by-side, snap-in installation in new E-T-A rail-mountable sockets - the 80plus (with screwless PT connecting terminals) or the 81plus (with screw terminals). The sockets allow time-saving power distribution and signalling by means of plug-in type jumpers. In addition, coding pins ensure ease of allocation between breaker and socket according to the “lock-and-key principle”. The dimensions of type REF16-S with socket meet the requirements of the DIN 43880 standard (built-in equipment for electrical installation).

    Selective load protection by the E-T-A REF16-S is available in current ratings 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 6A and it only disconnects the faulty path in the event of an overload or short circuit in the load circuit without any repercussions on the 24V DC supply. Thus voltage dips are prevented in the event of a failure in one single circuit, without leading to a failure of all loads connected to the switch-mode power supply.

    Type REF16-S limits the short circuit current to typically 1.25 times rated current and disconnects the faulty path after 800ms at the latest. However, inrush current peaks or peaks during normal operation will be tolerated. It is therefore no problem to switch capacitive loads up to 20,000µF. In the event of an overload the integral power MOSFET disconnects promptly from 1.25 times rated current.

    A multi-coloured LED provides visual status and failure indications. Signalling can optionally be made available by an integral short-circuit-proof status output or auxiliary contacts. Remote operation is also possible via a remote reset signal or a remote control signal ON/OFF. The manual ON/OFF button on the device allows intentional start-up of individual load circuits.

  11. New E-T-A low-cost and space-saving thermal circuit breakers

    E-T-A Circuit Breakers, quality designer and manufacturer of a broad range of electro- mechanical and electronic products for circuit protection, has introduced a new, low-cost family of miniaturised thermal circuit breakers. Unlike standard fuses, the E-T-A 1657, 1658 and 1659 single-pole circuit breakers are easily and quickly reset after tripping due to overcurrent. Between them they offer a choice of current rating and tripping characteristics, blade or screw terminals, thread-neck or snap-in mounting, and button or auto reset. Watersplash protection for the actuator button is offered as an accessory.

    Ideally suited for the protection of motors, transformers and cables in a very wide range of industrial and consumer applications, all circuit breakers in the family feature a trip-free, snap-action mechanism ensuring reliable and automatic disconnection in the event of an overcurrent, even with a blocked actuator button. Each model has different dimensions and different characteristics. Between them they offer a full range of current and voltage ratings for the protection of AC and DC loads.The new E-T-A 1657 is a single-pole, thread-neck mounting R-Type TO CBE with EN 60934 and other international approvals. The type 1657 can be specified for applications in a choice of current ratings from 5A to 20A for use on 250V AC or 32V DC, with blade or screw terminals. Featuring a manual reset button, the body measures just 29.1mm x 22.5mm and 14.4mm in width. The type 1658 can be specified with a thread-neck and push-button actuation or a flush head with auto-reset functionality. It is available in a choice of current ratings from 5A to 30A for use on 240V AC or 28V DC with blade terminals. The body measures 32.0mm x 27.0mm and 14.0mm in width.   12. New Three-in-One X3130 Appliance Inlet Module

    E-T-A Circuit Breakers announced the availability of its new X3130 Appliance Inlet Module. The X3130, integrated with E-T-A’s double-pole 3130 thermal circuit breaker, combines a C14 appliance inlet module, rocker switch and resettable overcurrent protection in one compact package.  This three-in-one device allows design engineers to streamline the number of components in their designs - cutting installation time by 66 percent - and reduce the overall cost and size of the equipment.

    Available in current ratings up to 15A and AC 240V, the new X3130 solution provides protection from harmful overloads and potential short circuits. It has a C14 appliance inlet module (to IEC 60320) and is designed for screw-type mounting which reduces the chance of accidental removal of inlet from equipment by users.
     
    The X3130 Appliance Inlet Module is approved to UL, VDE and CCC and, in combination with the 3130-FA.A thermal circuit breaker, is designed for use in applications where the equipment and power cord are packaged separately  – primarily in medical, office, laboratory, floor care and professional audio equipment applications.

    Designed for standard 4-pole automotive relay sockets (to ISO 7588), the E-T-A Electronic Standard Relay ESR10-P ISO Maxi is suitable for 12V DC on-board electrical systems, is rated to 50A and offers remote re-setting in the event of an overload trip. The ESR10 is suitable for a wide range of 12V DC systems, for example switching and protecting motors, lamps and magnetic valves in road, construction, agricultural and rail vehicles as well as for work and leisure boats, and for industrial applications in process and automation. The solid-state design of the E-T-A ESR10 relay offers wear-free switching and is unsusceptible to shock, vibration and dust.     E-T-A Circuit Breakers, quality designer and manufacturer of a broad range of electro-mechanical and electronic products for circuit protection, has introduced the first track-mountable electronic circuit breaker with physical isolation offering worldwide approvals. The new E-T-A ESS31-T mechatronic circuit breaker provides overcurrent protection against overloads and short circuits for whenever the current in a 24V DC control circuit might exceed the current carrying capacity of the conductor or the rated value of a component.


    The E-T-A ESS31-T is a fully featured circuit breaker for equipment protection with an electronic-hybrid trip characteristic, which is approved as a UL 1077 supplementary protector and also to EN/IEC 60934, for fixed current ratings from 0.5A to 12A. It ensures globally certified protection of equipment in control cabinets and field components,  and protects 24V DC control circuits in cabinets designed in accordance with UL508A.


    Featuring a single trip curve for all types of loads, the ESS31-T enables protection of a wide range of 24V DC switch-mode powered automation and safety equipment. In the event of a failure, the ESS31-T will shutdown electronically a single faulty output, while allowing all other load circuits connected to the same power supply to continue working as normal.  It ensures a controlled stoppage of the machinery and allows efficient troubleshooting: after the problem is solved, the load output can be simply re-activated by a press of the ON/OFF button.In applications with long load lines or small cross section cables, the ESS31-T typically disconnects an overcurrent of 1.2 times the rated breaker current within 500ms, with final physical isolation after 5 seconds. In the event of a low resistance short circuit in a load path, disconnection will occur after 100ms. High short currents or capacitive in-rush currents of electronic modules are limited by the integral current limitation of the circuit breaker, preventing wear of the mechanical contacts or switchgear. This minimises the need to regularly replace mechanical components and reduces machine downtime, while saving on maintenance and service costs. The E-T-A ESS31-T is just 12.5mm wide and features status indication, visually by a multi-coloured LED and the ON/OF switch position, as well as by integral signal outputs.

    The globally unique and innovative accordion-style seal and the version with a water splash cover exclude machine failures and product rejects on grounds of dust or water ingress. Compared to conventional dust and water splash protection solutions, these two versions of 3120-N do not only seal the actuating area. The rubber gasket encloses the bezel and tightly presses to the panel, so that the mounting cut-out is also protected.

    Easy actuation

    Thanks to freely accessible rocker actuators and large push buttons, the breakers can conveniently be operated even if fitted with actuator guards or water splash protection.     The 3120 circuit breaker/switch combination has been one of E-T-A’s best-selling products for many years. Based on feedback we received from our customers over the past few years, we launched a new enhanced generation, the N design, in July 2019. Thanks to e.g. freely accessible rocker actuators and large push buttons, the new breakers can always conveniently be operated, even if fitted with actuator guards or water splash protection. In addition, the globally unique accordion-style seal for the rocker-actuated version excludes machine failures and product rejects caused by dust or water ingress.

    Important to know: Identical mounting cut-outs and performance data allow quick and easy interchange of the breakers, supported by unchanged approval data.

    The SPR10-T is a solid state remote power controller and is suitable for DC 12 V and DC 24 V applications. A special feature of the SPR10-T is that it combines switching and protecting functions in a single device. In addition, it offers status indication by means of LED and status output.

    Reliable switching operation with overcurrent protection 

    Unlike conventional electronic and mechanical relays, the SPR10-T provides integral overcurrent protection. An additional external overcurrent protection element is not required. In the event of a failure, only the faulty path is disconnected and the fault is indicated at the device or at the status output; all other circuits remain unaffected.     E-T-A in times of the Corona crisis

    E-T-A takes the Sars-CoV-2 virus disease, the so-called “Corona virus”, very seriously. For quite a while, we have been busy with prevention and planning to be prepared in the best possible way. All measures taken till yet have proved their worth. They ensured that we have not had any infections so far and that our business operations can continue nearly without any restrictions.

    The measures we determined at E-T-A include:

    • The subject of corporate infection protection and health is placed on the highest level, i.e. with the management board.
    • We installed an interdisciplinary crisis committee to plan and implement preventive action and possibly required emergency measures.
    • Our staff is continuously kept informed via various channels about current developments of the infection, preventive measures and recommended procedures, partly also as binding instructions.
    • Internal communication ways are kept short to advise temporary absences of employees.
    • We established comprehensive stand-in arrangements.
    • We observe the hygiene regulations issued by the Federal Centre for Health Education.
    • We cancelled all national and international business trips into the risk zones as defined by the Robert-Koch-Institute until further notice.
    • We limit internal meetings to the minimum and to virtual meeting rooms and conference calls.
    • We transfer all jobs which are not attached to a certain place to home offices.

    Currently, no one can seriously forecast the future development of the number of infections nor the effects this will have on our staff and on the staffs of our suppliers and partners. At the same time, we will do our utmost to keep up the availability and performance of our products and services in the accustomed quality.

    Power saving and reduced fuel consumption also with a monostable design

    In the event of a power disruption, the electro-mechanical MPR20 will at once go into its original state due to its monostable design. Monostable means that only one switching status is stable – which is normally the OFF condition. The ON condition can only be achieved by excitation of the coil. 

    The specific design with an electronically activated coil reduces the holding power by the factor 10. Reduction of holding power by 80 % and of the pull-in power by 50 % allows direct connection to the controlgear and provides additional cost and environmental advantages in spite of a monostable design.

    An E-T-A classic with a new look

    E-T-A’s 3120 circuit breaker works as an ON/OFF switch in machinery and devices. It also provides reliable disconnection in the event of an overcurrent. After tripping due to an overcurrent, the user can easily and quickly reset the 3120-N to resume operation. Time-consuming replacement of fuses is eliminated. Now, the well-proven classic presents itself with a new accordion-style seal.

    Enhanced uptime of equipment and machinery

    The new innovative bellows-type seal offers IP65 degree of protection. Even fine dust or water jets will not cause any damage. Failures or machine downtimes are prevented.

    Compared to standard PVC splash covers, the new E-T-A accordion-style seal not only protects the actuation area, but it also protects the mounting hole with an all-round rubber lip.

    With regard to environmental influences, the new accordion-style seal has quite a few advantages. Conventional splash covers made of PVC become yellow when exposed to the sun. They also become brittle and can crack due to environmental influences. The silicone seal, however, is unsusceptible to ozone and ultraviolet light. Acids or oils cannot damage the new seal either. This is very positive, because discoloured or dirty splash covers often block the visibility of the rocker and its position.

    Easy actuation

    The new seal of E-T-A’s 3120-N series leaves the rocker actuator easily accessible. Switching the device is simple, even when the user is wearing gloves. And what is more: Due to the freely accessible rocker actuator, the switching condition (ON or OFF) can always clearly be discerned.
