Inert Gas UV Curing System

Increasingly, UV curable inks and varnishes are used for food packaging applications. Conventional UV ink chemistry can lead to an unacceptably high level of contamination caused by incomplete cross-linking due to the presence of oxygen. Uncured monomers and photoinitiators can also migrate through the base material causing contamination of the contents.

Reducing the level of oxygen significantly improves surface cross-linking with a commensurate reduction in odour. Specially formulated inks can also reduce the causes of initiator migration. GEW have developed a simple method of oxygen removal with a new design of system.

GEW’s e-System inert

GEW have developed a compact system in which a sealed curing chamber is built around a small idler roller. Oxygen is purged from the chamber using nitrogen gas, which is introduced in a controlled manner via a “nitrogen knife” at the web inlet and via an injector in the curing chamber. An oxygen sensor within the chamber continuously monitors the oxygen level, which is displayed on the control unit in parts per million.

Controlling the oxygen level within the curing chamber is simply a matter of adjusting the nitrogen flow rate until the desired reading is achieved. For critical applications an alarm can be set to activate should the oxygen level exceed a user-defined limit. As an additional feature, the idle roller can be water-cooled to provide superior web temperature control. This reliable system is both frugal on nitrogen consumption and simple to use.

UV-Set Newspaper Printing

Traditionally, newspapers have been produced with un-coated paper and printed with cold-set inks that dry by absorption into the substrate. The demand in recent years has changed to newspapers in combination with colourful supplementary sections and direct advertising printed on gloss-coated material. This type of work would normally require separate investment in a dedicated heat-set press and / or the installation of a large and expensive drying oven.

However, cold-set presses can be easily upgraded with a compact GEW UV curing system to enable production of high quality work on both coated and uncoated papers. Printing can be either UV or a combination of cold-set and UV. This enables the printing presses’ capacity to be expanded and more efficiently used in the newsprint area, allowing the glossy supplements to be printed during the day when the press would normally be standing idle.

GEW can offer this solution in both water- and air-cooled formats, and recently fitted a water-cooled system to a Harris M300 cold set press in Scandinavia. This enables the machine to run comfortably in excess of 30,000 impressions per hour when in UV-set mode.

Laboratory (Bench Top)

The GEW Mini Laboratory Unit is a robust, well-specified, stand-alone bench top UV curing unit for laboratory or low volume production environments. CAD designed, the unit is manufactured to the highest construction standards using extruded aluminium sections and a stainless steel mesh belt. With constant UV lamp power, the curing dosage is simply controlled by varying the belt speed. An effective air-cooling system keeps the whole unit cool even after many hours of continuous operation at full speed. All parts are guaranteed for 12 months.

The unit's capability can be extended to include inert gas UV curing with GEW’s optional sample holder. The holder, constructed from machined aluminium and quartz glass, enables the testing of UV inks, varnishes and silicone coatings on board, sheet and film under an inert atmosphere of nitrogen. The sample is placed in the sample tray where it is secured by clips. The lid with its quartz window is clamped onto the sample tray by two ¼ turn quick-release fasteners and a gastight seal is achieved. Oxygen is then purged from the curing zone by the injection of inert gas (typically nitrogen) and the entire assembly is passed through the Laboratory Unit to complete the test. This method allows the lowest cost solution without the need of an expensive liquid nitrogen supply.
