IMERYS Pigments for Paper and Packaging
IMERYS Pigments for Paper & Packaging is a global leader in supplying high quality white pigments for the world’s paper industry. We mine minerals from high quality reserves and process them to develop solutions that improve both our customer’s product performance and their manufacturing efficiency.
With a unique and comprehensive portfolio of both kaolins and carbonates, IMERYS Pigments for Paper & Packaging is perfectly positioned to deliver advanced multi-pigment solutions to its global customer base.
Advanced technological expertise, comprising an in-depth knowledge of minerals and the specific properties they provide to the paper producer’s end products allows IMERYS Pigments for Paper & Packaging to form long lasting partnerships with its global customers.
IMERYS is the global leader in kaolin and offers the most comprehensive range of kaolins for the paper industry. We draw upon reserves in Cornwall, UK; Middle Georgia, US; Rio Capim Caulim, Brazil; and Pittong, Australia. From filler clays to engineered kaolins for coating, Imerys continues to add value to paper.
New production and process control technologies can facilitate the manufacture of coating kaolins to meet the needs of global papermakers. Proprietary on-line instrumentation used during kaolin production has now made it possible to commercialise a new generation of products.
Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC) is produced through mechanical grinding of naturally occurring calcium carbonate rocks. The majority of Imerys production sites use high brightness marble as the raw material but, at some sites, locally available limestone or chalk is used.
GCC in-pigment formulations provides good rheology and high brightness at low cost. IMERYS Pigments for Paper & Packaging has the multi-pigment formulation knowledge to select the best partner pigments to complement GCC, playing to its strengths and avoiding its weaknesses.
Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is a mineral pigment used throughout the world for paper production. It is valued for its high brightness and light scattering characteristics in paper filling and coating applications.
Most of the PCC produced throughout the world comes from satellite PCC plants at paper mill sites. The two main raw materials required are quicklime and carbon dioxide. In most cases, carbon dioxide is available from a mill flue gas source. Imerys produces a range of PCC products characterised by specific particle shape, particle size distribution, and optical properties. Imerys’ process control systems ensure a consistent, high quality product that meets customers' precise specifications.
