  1. Timing Belt Conveyor from mk serves as Load Handling Device
    7 August 2023

SEW-EURODRIVE has established efficient and flexible processes to achieve its vision for Industry 4.0. SEW’s new design for automated guided vehicles at its main U.S. location includes integrated timing belt conveyors from mk. These vehicles serve as mobile workbenches for mounting individual gearboxes.

Classic interlinked conveyor technology is the most efficient way to automate processes in mass production. In customised production, however, the requirements are ever-changing – with “lot size one” being the key word. This is where the flexibility of automated guided vehicles can be put to good use.

At its American headquarters in Lyman, South Carolina, SEW-EURODRIVE has built a flexible production facility that is optimised for precisely such custom production – where classic conveyor technology is combined with flexible workstations. The autonomous vehicles drive through the hall independently, picking up pre-assembled gearboxes from a belt conveyor and taking them to the workers, who can then continue mounting them on the vehicle itself as if they were at a mobile workbench. The vehicle then travels to the next station and transfers the gearbox back to a belt conveyor. It is thus possible to mount individual gearboxes, with efficient and flexible processes.

Through its “MAXOLUTION System Solutions” business segment, SEW offers scalable and future-proof system solutions in the field of mobile and rail-guided conveyor technology. As an overall solution supplier for automated guided vehicle systems, it focuses not only on the vehicles themselves but also on all the services associated with them, from system planning to commissioning and servicing. The vehicles and system components are produced at SEW-EURODRIVE’s headquarters in Bruchsal, Germany. Alongside SEW’s world-renowned modular system for gearmotors and electronic products, it also engineers autonomous vehicles based on an innovative modular technology and software system. This system makes it possible to configure individual vehicles while keeping complexity low.

Timing belt conveyor from mk makes the ideal load handling device

To autonomously pick up and then set down the gearmotors with a belt conveyor, the vehicles need an appropriately powered load handling device. “We had initially considered a chain conveyor that we could integrate into our vehicles,” says Aaron Bronner. However, working with the conveyor technology experts at the mk Technology Group (mk), the team found a better solution. “We decided on a dual-line timing belt conveyor instead of a chain conveyor,” says Ulrich Klein, one of the field representatives at mk who assisted with the project. A timing belt conveyor is more economical and requires less maintenance than the chain conveyor in the original plan. Furthermore, the timing belt has a higher contact area than the chain. That also provides greater stability for the product on the vehicle, even when navigating sharp corners or making abrupt (emergency) stops. The ZRF-P 2010 timing belt conveyor from mk was the ideal solution for the project: it can safely carry the maximum load of 160 kg, and the drive variants available also allow for reverse operation (in both directions).

Because mk uses SEW drive technology as standard, integrating the drive was not a problem. The experts at MAXOLUTION programmed the controller and coordinated it with the overall system.

  2. Easy Product Handling with Vacuum Belt Conveyors
    6 June 2023

Belt conveyors with vacuum function for conveying goods in fixed positions without gripping or pallets.

Do your products tip over or float on the belt conveyor at high accelerations? Do your short cycle times not allow you to stop and handle the products with a gripper? Do you want to coat, scan, label or laser your products on their base? Do your products have to be continuously elevated or bridge a gap?

When transporting with a vacuum belt conveyor, products are fixed to the belt conveyor by a vacuum. This means that the products can, for example, be accelerated quickly or transported vertically, overhead or alongside the conveyor. Intermittent handling tasks can also run continuously with vacuum belt conveyors.

Vacuum belt conveyors are typically used to secure lightweight/large-area products at high accelerations or speeds. Goods of this type are often transported in the packaging, consumer goods and paper industries, or in battery production.

mk offers all of its belt conveyors and timing belt conveyors as vacuum belts. Only the conveyor frame and the belt are modified to implement the vacuum function. Unlike the belt conveyor, the timing belt conveyor has a positive drive mechanism that allows it to run without slippage. If an image processing system is used, the individual images can be matched to a specific distance travelled.

Our engineers will design all the necessary components, from the belt conveyor and suction line to the pump. Alternatively, you can request a complete vacuum belt conveyor that you can integrate into your production environment.

Benefits of the vacuum belt conveyor

    • Fixed position transport without gripping or pallets
    • Secure transport of lightweight products at high accelerations – no tipping over or floating
    • Products can be transported overhead or alongside the conveyor
    • Products can be processed or checked while moving

Basic structure of a vacuum belt conveyor

The conveyor frame is equipped with suction fittings for a vacuum pump (e.g. industrial vacuum cleaner or side channel blower). This creates a vacuum inside the conveyor frame. The conveyed products are gripped through holes in the slide bed and in the belt located above it, and then conveyed with the belt.

  3. NEW Tension Plug S
    5 October 2022

Tension plug S – the new addition to the mk range

mk is expanding its range of connecting elements with an additional tension plug designed to form strong and conductive connections between aluminium profiles with no obstructing edges.

The tension plug S creates strong, quick and easy aluminium profile structures with no obstructing edges. At the same time, the ribbing on the contact surface ensures that the connections are conductive (ESD).

The new connector was specially developed to connect mk series 40 aluminium profiles on the face side. The connector requires little installation work: two screws for initial assembly, loosen and tighten one screw to move. The tension plug is mounted in the central bore of the aluminium profile using an M8 thread. The aluminium profile can then be positioned in the T-slot of the second aluminium profile and fixed and released by tightening the 45° threaded pin.

Thomas Berg, development engineer at mk, explains the benefits: "This technology simplifies installation, thus saving a lot of time and money. Our new tension plug is a cost-effective, attractive, and also solid example of connection technology".

In terms of load capacity, the tension plug S can certainly compete with a lightweight angle bracket. But, unlike the angle bracket, the tension plug has no obstructing edges. This makes it very easy to create structures that are not only functional, but also meet the highest design standards. In addition, one T-slot remains completely open allowing panelling, for example, to be inserted into the slot.

The chain runs on wear strips to ensure low wear and can be operated at speeds of up to 50 m/min and system lengths up to 40 m with just one drive.

The system is extremely flexible and efficient with chain widths of 44 mm to 295 mm and a large selection of drives, bends, cleats, side rails and other accessories. Gentle transport and exact positioning using workpiece carriers is also available as standard. Versaflex has been used very successfully by an mk subsidiary for many years in various industries; it transports a wide variety of products reliably to their destination.

The many benefits of Versaflex include economical realisation of complex track designs with simple and fast configuration and commissioning.  It is suitable for all industries and is both user friendly and low maintenance. Versaflex can be quickly adapted to new production and environmental conditions saving energy and space. Accessories, side rails and such like can be attached in the slots on the conveyor frame profile.

The conveyor chains are made from the material POM and are available in a wide variety of designs for virtually all applications – with an adhesive surface for inclines, with steel covering for sharp-edged parts or flocked for transporting very delicate items. In addition, a large number of different cleats are available – rollers in a wide range of dimensions for accumulating products, or flexible cleats for implementing clamping conveyors. Furthermore, chain links with embedded magnets can be used to transport magnetisable parts.

Areas of application for Versaflex include primary and secondary-packaged products from, among others, the food, pharmaceutical, chemical or consumer goods industry. Also for the transport of workpiece carriers in assembly lines e.g. of the automotive industry and for the linking of machines in the manufacturing industry.

To ensure the precise positioning of products, workpiece carriers can also be transported on the A08 system. The system is 85 mm wide (chain width 83 mm) and is designed for products weighing up to 10 kg per carrier. The carriers have a standard width of 150 mm and are guided by side rails and positioned exactly in three levels in the locating stations. So the products are fixed, buffered and transported gently, safely and accurately. The workpiece carrier can be customised and equipped with individual fixtures. The locate station can be freely positioned without changing the side rails. A positional accuracy of ± 0.1 mm can be achieved by lifting the workpiece carrier off the conveyor chain.

  5. Very long conveying path for non-stop assembly
    30 August 2022

    Task

A production line requires an infeed conveyor for assembly stations. The workers process the products continuously. In order to achieve the required throughput, several assembly stations are built next to each other. As a result, the belt conveyor has to be particularly long.

    Solution from mk

For this task, a modular belt conveyor measuring approximately 42 m in length was constructed with a modular belt over 85 m long. The conveyor runs at a low speed of approx. 2 m/min. This allows the workers to work on the product comfortably without stopping. The side of the conveyor is completely covered with creep zone protection and a protective guard so that the workers can work safely on the conveyor. It can transport a total load of up to 700 kg. A second drive with a motor was used on the infeed end to ensure smooth running. The conveyor has been optimised for just-in-sequence production by marking sequence areas with white chain links and lasering the corresponding sequence numbers into the chain.

    Benefits for the customer

    • Extremely long conveyor

  6. Complete conveyor technology for car seat assembly
    30 August 2022

    Task

An automotive supplier is building a complete new production line for assembling seats and benches. Various production steps are required, such as feeding the upholstery and assembling the seat occupancy sensor and seat heating system. Each car seat is configured individually. Therefore, production and delivery must take place just-in-sequence, i.e. in the order in which the next vehicle is assembled. In order to be able to produce the large number of seats required, several assembly stations are built next to each other. Very long conveying paths are necessary to maintain the sequence of the seats.

    Solution from mk

A combination of GUF-P 2004 belt conveyors, KGF-P curved belt conveyors, MBF-P 2010 modular belt conveyors and Versamove plus pallet transfer systems was created for the production line. The contact surface of the belt conveyors and modular belt conveyors are printed with sequence areas and numbers so that all components can be assigned a fixed position. This allows the different seat parts to be deposited and processed in the required order. The pallets in the Versamove system are fitted with RFID chips on which the respective sequence number can be marked. Thanks to the modular mk design, the conveying paths were able to extend up to 45 m in length. They were transported in smaller sections before being assembled and commissioned at the customer's site.

All conveying paths are equipped with their own controllers and connected to the customer's higher-level system, in which faults are recorded and displayed centrally. The sides of all the conveyors are also completely covered with creep zone protection and a protective guard.

  7. Rack system for use in ISO-5 cleanroom
    30 August 2022

    Task

A specialist in cleanroom intralogistics is developing a decentralised warehouse in accordance with cleanroom class ISO-5 for a customer in the electronics industry. The decentralised warehouse requires a rack system that meets the particle-reducing storage requirements. It should be possible to store highly sensitive electronic components for semiconductor production in transport containers across multiple levels of shelves. The different container types will be deposited and removed fully automatically by a 3-axis linear system. A frame for a semi-automated transfer station with a lock gate is also required.

    Solution from mk

Four different racks of up to 12 m in length and with up to 50 storage compartments across 5 levels were manufactured. The frame, the mounts and the lock gate for the transfer station were also produced.

In order to meet the cleanroom requirements, the design was based around the mk cleanroom profile mk 2040.96 with a cross-section of 40 x 40 mm. The profile has a smooth surface and is closed on all sides, which ensures easy cleaning. In addition, mk’s typical corner radius of 1 mm ensures that the profiles are connected to each other with almost no gaps. The aluminium profiles were rough sawn, i.e. without anodising, and drilled to fit the connecting elements. Once the profiles were ready to assemble, they were then chemically cleaned, anodised and cleaned again.

The profiles were connected using internal tension plugs to eliminate obstructing edges during construction. The holes for the tension plugs were covered with appropriate plugs so that no pockets of dirt formed. Open profile ends were also fitted with end caps. The racks can be aligned and fixed to the floor using levelling feet.

    Benefit for the customer

    • Designed to ensure low particle content by using cleanroom profiles
    • Easy cleaning due to easily accessible surfaces with no obstructing edges

  8. Container replacement system for automated material flows
    30 August 2022

    Task

An automotive supplier for lighting technology and electronics requires further automation of its existing processes to keep its location competitive for the future. The customer wishes to improve the flow of materials at the injection moulding machines to allow for more efficient and flexible use of the machines. Small load carriers (SLC) containing multi-layer workpiece holders must be supplied to a robot workstation, filled and then removed again by a space-saving solution. To be filled by the robot, the containers must be positioned exactly and stopped without damaging the sensitive workpieces. In addition, it must be possible to buffer several SLCs so that this process can run independently for a period of time.

    Solution from MK

MK designed several compact container replacement systems to meet these requirements. A frame made of Series 40 aluminium profiles contains GUF-P 2000 belt conveyors located on two levels, connected by short lifts. The empty SLCs are fed to the robot on the upper level. There they are separated and centred so that the robot can position the workpiece holders and intermediate layers in the containers, as well as the workpieces themselves. The filled SLCs are lowered by the short lift to the lower level, where they are removed from the workstation and stopped at the end of the conveyor without any shocks to the workpieces. The system has the capacity to buffer three containers per level. Since some injection moulding tools can mould different parts simultaneously, it is possible to place multiple conveyor lines next to each another and thus provide the robot with multiple SLCs in parallel. This allows you to separate the parts into different SLCs based on type.

  10. Three-Axis Handling with Tray Re-circulation System
    5 November 2020

mk have designed a fully automated system for a customer who required a palletiser with a connected tray recirculation system.  This custom solution uses cost-effective standard components and adapted special functions which allows pallet trucks to be used to feed Euro pallets into the system.

The palletiser which de-stacks the filled trays from the Euro pallets then feeds them into the recirculation system. They are then conveyed to an index station, where a customer-provided robot removes the workpieces from the trays. The empty trays are conveyed back to the palletiser, where they are stacked on empty pallets and made available to be transported away. The system is able to recognise and handle different tray types and different stack heights on the pallets. Crucially, the machine is also built from components that are as tough as possible and are able to operate autonomously for up to 14 hours.

mk used their extensive profile range for the transport system with feeding and removal of pallets via heavy-duty roller conveyors. Alignment of tray stacks was achieved using pneumatic positioning units with approach angle attachments. A 3-axis palletiser gantry, consisting of LZR 2005 linear modules with a rotating gripper and balancing stroke compliments this. A tray recirculation system, consisting of KTF-P 2010 chain conveyors, was combined with lifting units. Finally, an index station and device is utilised to hold down the trays so the workpieces can be removed by a customer-provided robot.

  11. A GUF for all purposes
    24 June 2020

An overview of the diversity of mk’s belt conveyor variants.

With the rise of industrial automation, belt conveyors have taken on most of the transport tasks involved in production processes. Nowadays, wherever you look, you’ll find belt conveyors in all different designs and versions.

Belt conveyors are suitable for almost any industrial application in which piece goods are to be transported without any particular requirements in terms of their orientation or positioning. All different shapes and dimensions, packaged or unpackaged, light or heavy, can be transported using a belt conveyor.

For these applications, mk offers a huge range of standardised, modular belt conveyor systems, also called GUF. The design options are virtually unlimited: any width from 50 mm to 2 m, any length from 300 mm to 20 m, loads of up to 350 kg, and speeds of up to 80 m/min.

Thanks to a compact design using aluminium profiles, the conveyors are easy to integrate into existing production lines, even complex ones, and to adapt as necessary. The profile system makes the design highly flexible, and lateral profile grooves provide ample options for mounting attachments and accessories.

In addition to straight segments, belt conveyors are available in double-line, inclined and curved versions. Special designs are available for clamping, scanning, vacuum and magnetic applications.

The right system for any application

mk developed a standard straight belt conveyor in the mid-1970s. Today, innumerable further developments later, it forms the heart of the portfolio of mk conveyor technology. Over the years, versatile belt conveyor series of all different sizes and weight classes have been created. The perfect conveyor can be configured for virtually any type of goods, transport or environmental conditions.

Small Conveyor GUF-P Mini – The smallest series, GUF-P Mini, is particularly well-suited to transporting and separating small components with low volumes and weights. It is available in widths of 75 to 150 mm and in lengths of 360 to 5,000 mm. Thanks to its minimal installation height, this conveyor is ideal for use in complex systems where space is at a premium. Since the belt recirculation is integrated in the conveyor frame, the conveyor can be placed directly on the machine bed.

Compact Belt Conveyor GUF-P 2045 – The extremely compact GUF-P 2045 series is perfect for integrating into systems with limited space available for installation. The ø 50 mm drive roller combined with the weight-optimised, 45 mm tall conveyor frame profile produces a conveyor that is extremely flat and without any obstructing edges. A total permissible load of 15 kg accommodates most of the products typical in the packaging and injection moulding industries.

Versatile Belt Conveyor GUF-P 2000 – The GUF-P 2000 series is the all-rounder for light- to medium-weight goods based on the mk 2000 profile. It is extremely versatile thanks to the large assortment of available drives, tails, stands and belt types. This series is characterised by a low height of 50 mm and a compact ø 53 mm driving roller as well as a wide variety of different belt types. Furthermore, the system is available with an optional stationary or rolling knife edge.

Sturdy Belt Conveyor GUF-P 2041 – Based on the mk 2251 profile, the sturdy GUF-P 2041 series was developed for high belt loads of up to 150 kg and for conveying goods up to 1200 mm wide. It uses an 85-mm driving roller that affords highly efficient transmission of the motor’s power. The series is available with a virtually unlimited selection of different belt types, including designs with cleats and side walls, and numerous combinations of drives, tails and stands, with knife edges and drum motors as options.

Heavy Belt Conveyor GUF-P 2004 – The GUF-P 2004 is the largest series, based on the mk 2004 profile, and features a 105-mm roller. Capable of handling a total load weighing up to 200 kg and measuring up to 2,000 mm wide and 20,000 mm long, this torsion-resistant conveyor frame provides easy transport of particularly heavy loads and bulky goods. It can be complemented with accessory components such as side rails and stands.

Double Belt Conveyor DGF-P 2001 – The dual-line DGF-P 2001 series is particularly well-suited for transporting small work piece pallets. It’s very small idler rollers allow it to transport even short pallets, for example those used in assembly systems in the electronics industry. The belt runs entirely on wear strips, which allows for a maximum weight of 15 kg per section.

  12. Belt Conveyor for PPE Masks
    24 June 2020

mk were asked to deliver a large number of conveyors to a long standing customer in a short time frame. The conveyors were needed for a plant that needs to produce up to 100 PPE masks per minute in a fully automatic process. As the demand for such plants is extremely high due to the spread of the coronavirus, the conveyors needed to be delivered quickly as well as being easy to put into operation. The mk conveyors needed to convey the masks to separate production steps within the plant, such as folding, bonding and supplying nose clips. The masks are then disinfected in subsequent steps. The conveyor had to be designed for a three-shift operation.

Together with the customer’s design team, mk employees configured a conveyor consisting of as many standard components as possible, but which still satisfied the necessary cleanliness requirements. The best-selling mk GUF-P 2000 conveyor was the best solution for the job. The highly standardised belt conveyor can be quickly delivered and is easy to integrate, which enabled mk to deliver 40 conveyors in just a few weeks. The conveyor is also reasonably priced thanks to the high level of standardisation. An FDA-approved belt was used in order to keep the masks free of contamination. mk constructed the belt conveyor with low-maintenance, indirect drives with timing belts to ensure that the three-shift operation runs reliably and without malfunctions.

  13. Periodic Table
    21 April 2020

2019 was the international year of the periodic table, marking the 150th year of the table of elements.  To mark this milestone, mk Profile Systems worked closely with Warwick University to create a giant periodic table sized at 3.6m x 2.7m x 2m with its structure based on both the 25 and 40 series of the mk aluminium profile system.

The benefit of using mk’s comprehensive profile system was that it requires no welding, abrasive grinding or painting unlike a steel structure.  However the profiles are sturdy and combine high load capacity whilst retaining an attractive design.

The 25 series profile is ideal for light duty frames and show cases but by incorporating the 40 series, which is ideal for exhibit pieces, this provides additional strength to the display piece.

Initially on display at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition in London at the start of July 2019, the table will then be used at other shows/events.

The idea for the structure came from Warwick University, a long standing customer of mk Profiles, and then mk assisted with the design to ensure that the vision became a reality.

Once all of the profiles and associated components had been delivered to Warwick University the students set to work assembling the structure and then adding the elements. This included 1064 LEDs with 9 LEDs for each element; the elements each have their own micro controller with individual addresses, then each of the six main blocks has a 12C routing board to address the (up to) 24 elements. The routing boards connect to a central hub which in turn links to the control panel that has its own controllers, 126 in total.

  14. Implement any track layout efficiently – KMF-P 2040 curved modular belt conveyor.
    21 April 2020

mk rounds off its portfolio of modular belt conveyors by adding curved segments

mk Profile Systems’ existing portfolio of straight and incline (vertical) modular conveyors has been expanded to include curved segments. These segments are based on the same system and are available in various layouts and angles. The different versions allow you to adapt the track layout to your existing production conditions. Moreover, the various belt widths from 164 to 1005 mm offer excellent ratios of usable width to total width, which allows you to use the conveyors even in locations where space is limited. The system's modular design allows you to combine the segments with straight and incline conveyors to achieve virtually any three-dimensional track layout.

Modular belt conveyors can support very heavy loads, even with low belt widths, because of their positive drive mechanism. In addition, the guides along the sides of the conveyor can absorb lateral forces, which allows workpieces to be moved diagonally. A further benefit is that liquids from the goods being transported can drip through the chain, making cleaning of the modular chain belt quick and easy.

Modular belt conveyors are extremely sturdy and can be used for virtually any transport application. They are more wear resistant than solid belts and can also be used for applications where goods with sharp edges must be transported or where ambient conditions are harsh.

    Benefits Include:

    – Variable track layouts with just a single drive

    – Maximum usable width with low total width

    – Lateral movement of goods

    – Various speeds at no additional cost

    – Low maintenance and wear

    – Extremely high intrinsic safety

    – Wide range of accessories

  15. An overview of mk’s product portfolio for working under cleanroom conditions
    22 May 2019

An overview of mk’s product portfolio for working under cleanroom conditions

Working under cleanroom conditions has largely become the industry standard in the fields of electrical and medical technology as well as in the pharmaceutical, food and semiconductor industries. Due to the increased use of microelectronics in the automotive sector and the resulting rise in demands for technical cleanliness, cleanrooms are also set to become more common throughout the automobile industry and its suppliers in the future. A cleanroom facilitates the manufacturing and packaging of highly technical or particularly sensitive products, while at the same time offering suitable environmental conditions for a wide range of research and development work.

Cleanrooms are defined as a room in which the concentration of airborne particles is kept to a minimum. The air purity is classified according to cleanliness classes and the equipment in a cleanroom must fulfil the strict requirements of the respective particle purity class. This means that gaps, holes and rough surfaces must be avoided in order to facilitate removal of particle deposits and thereby reduce contamination.

In a cleanroom environment, constructions such as machine frames, protective device guards, workstations or work platforms must meet the relevant requirements of the room’s cleanliness class. To meet these requirements, mk offers a comprehensive portfolio of cleanroom profiles and corresponding accessories.

    Aluminium cleanroom profiles

mk cleanroom profiles feature a smooth, flat surface that prevents dirt from accumulating. The typical mk edge radius of just 1 mm ensures smooth connections between profiles, with virtually no gaps or spaces. Thanks to its clean, smooth design, a construction made of cleanroom profiles has the added advantage of having a high-quality, attractive appearance.

A range of profiles are available with one to four closed sides and rectangular cross sections of 40 x 40, 40 x 80, 80 x 80 and 50 x 50 mm, as well as two round profiles with a diameter of either 28 mm or 40 mm.

Traditionally, the open system slot is one of the most important product features in aluminium profile technology. It gives engineers the necessary flexibility to construct an infinitely adjustable profile frame. In cleanroom profiles this slot is closed, but it can be partially or fully opened if needed. The opened slot can then be used to attach connecting elements or to mount other attachments.

    Connecting elements

In order to ensure proper cleanroom-standard connections between profiles, a connection must be created with as few obstructing contours as possible. It must be easy to clean properly with no unnecessary edges or corners where particles might accumulate.

The mk cleanroom fastener is the perfect component for this job. It is made of stainless steel and connects Series 40 cleanroom profile components cleanly without any twisting. The anti-twist device is clipped into the face of a profile fitted with a threaded insert and tightened through a ø10 mm drill hole in the opposing profile. The hole is then sealed cleanly with a plug or sticker.

Likewise, the tension plug with thrust part is also suitable for use in a cleanroom as it does not need to be inserted into the face of a profile. It is simply inserted into the opened slot in a cleanroom profile and tightened through a ø10 mm drill hole in the opposing profile. The hole is then likewise sealed with a plug or sticker.

It’s easy to mount attachment parts with the stainless steel swivel-in nut 1. The spring sheet fixes the nut into the opened slot in the cleanroom profile so that it can also be used in a vertical position. In addition to this, the ESD function ensures that the connection is conductive.

    Closure strips and end caps

As an alternative to cleanroom profiles or as a retrofit solution, the system slot of a standard profile can also be sealed with closure strips. This also acts to prevent the accumulation of dirt. Aluminium closure strips sit seamlessly in the slot after being hammered. Closure strips are available in a range of different coloured plastic, providing visual highlights and/or drawing attention to the supply lines that might be located beneath the strip.

Plastic end caps are used to seal the face of a profile. The end cap is fastened to the profile simply by inserting it into the end, thus creating a clean closure and an attractive appearance. End caps also protect against sharp-edged cut surfaces.

    GUF-R 2000 cleanroom belt conveyor

To complete the construction kit for cleanroom-standard factory automation, the product range also includes a certified belt conveyor system for use in cleanrooms. The GUF-R 2000 cleanroom belt conveyor has been optimised on the basis of the GUF-P 2000 conveyor system to ensure the lowest possible levels of particle emissions. Furthermore, the conveyor uses a surface-cooled smooth-surface motor that produces very little air turbulence during operation. The conveyor is particularly easy to clean thanks to its large, smooth surfaces. The system version with the AF drive has been certified by the Fraunhofer Institute IPA with an air cleanliness class of 4 in accordance with DIN ISO 14644-01 standards. Its modular design and anodised accessories, such as side rails and conveyor stands, make the belt conveyor highly versatile. Series 50 closed cleanroom profiles and stainless steel levelling feet are used to set up the conveyor. As a result, it is easy to integrate into existing cleanrooms.

  17. Interlinking for Canister Transport with a Bridge
    15 February 2019

Interlinking for Canister Transport with a Bridge

When a customer came to mk saying that they needed to achieve continuous transport without complicated stopping and turning for their production line, mk said no problem!

Two machining stations in a plastic canister production process needed to be interlinked and the solution had to cope with inconvenient spatial constraints: Empty canisters needed to be conveyed along a curve and past another machine so that they could be brought back to the original feed height at the discharge point, where they were allowed to accumulate. The canisters were transported standing and transverse to the conveying direction, and they needed to have the same alignment at the end of the interlink that they had when they entered. Each canister weighs about two kilogrammes. The interlink needed to run reliably in a two-shift operation. Additional spatial constraints regarding the length and height of the interlink had to also be observed.

mk devised a transport system built from the mk modular construction kit. A KMF-P 2040 curved modular belt conveyor was used to feed the products in. This allowed the canisters to be transported in the correct position without complicated stopping and turning. Two ZRF-P 2040 timing belt conveyors with a timing belt equipped with longitudinal grooves serve as the incline. They were positioned at an upward incline of about 30°. The canisters travel between the two lines. The high friction of the timing belt and gentle clamping between the lines ensure that the canisters are transported upwards. A closed-loop controller is used to precisely synchronise the two timing belt conveyor lines so that there is no offset. A GUF-P 2000 belt conveyor serves as the bridge, while two additional timing belt conveyors transport the canisters downwards again. An additional belt conveyor with an end stop is used as the discharge and removal station. The entire frame is built using the mk profile construction kit.

    29 November 2018

Protective Enclosure made from 40mm Aluminium Profiles

A toothbrush manufacturer has used mk Profile Systems’ 40 series profile to create a protective device guard for their packaging area.  The toothbrushes were already in their primary packaging, so there were no sanitary requirements but the protective guard is located in a typical cleanroom.

The guard, which was all made from the mk 40 series profile, was made entirely to the bespoke specifications of the customer. The profiles were anodised, the cut edges are blank and closed with sealing caps. The profile slots are closed with sealing strips.

An mk ZRF-P timing belt conveyor was also incorporated into the protective guard. It was crucial to ensure that the enclosure allowed easy access to the interior to allow for maintenance work to be carried out.  This was done by incorporating two maintenance doors also out of the 40 series profile, with a locking mechanism for the doors being provided by the customer.

Different panelling made from powder-coated sheets, Makrolon and powder-coated perforated sheets were used, again as per the customer’s requirements.

Finally, the enclosure was mounted on levelling feet, which can easily compensate for uneven floors.

The customer has a perfectly tailored solution to their guarding requirements with integrated conveyor technology, all from one single source. mk Profile Systems offers over 250 different profiles across their 25mm, 40mm, 50mm and 60mm ranges.  Their extensive conveyor range covers over 20 standard conveyor systems for all all types of goods in nearly all factory environments.  The modular nature of the mk system means that all elements of the system work in conjunction with each and can easily be adapted or added to at a later date.

  23. mk's Accumulating Pallet Recirculation System used by Leading German Appliance Manufacturer
    6 December 2016

The accumulating pallet recirculation system SPU 2040 enables cost-effective and dynamic feeding, buffering, positioning and separating of workpiece pallets (WT). In this application the SPU provided the perfect solution for transporting the housing of dishwashers for a leading German white goods manufacturer.

When linking multiple cycle or changeover times the SPU 2040 allows a countercyclical operation with automatic recirculation of the workpiece.  A flat top chain carries the workpieces on the WT to the assembly plant.  After removal of the workpieces the empty pallets are safely carried over the return roller and then conveyed back on the underside of the conveyor.  They are then once again available at the starting point of the conveyor waiting to be loaded with new workpieces.  A second conveying level and devices for lifting and lowering with complex control elements are no longer required.  No additional manual or automated loading of pallets in necessary either.

In this particular application the SPU will equalise and buffer each dishwasher housing carrier between two machines through the process of becoming a welded unit and a fully assembled unit.  There is also a requirement to stop the carriers for optical inspections via image processing and for mounting further components.

Although the SPU is available as both a single and dual lane solution, due to the size of the dishwasher housing (approximately 800 x 600 x 400mm) a double lane solution was provided in this instance.  Additionally the carriers consist of two parts, to ensure navigation around the return roller.

The SPU 2040 is very compact in comparison with other systems on the market so meant low space requirements for this appliance manufacturer. It also offers the benefit of good ergonomic properties for workers who place or remove the dishwasher housing from the system.

Due to the proven mk modular design the SPU 2040 is adjustable so can be further enhanced or adapted as the white goods manufacturer’s production requirements grow or need adapting.

  24. Cost Efficient Automation with Accumulating Pallet Recirculation System
    13 October 2016

Space-saving and dynamic buffering and linking with the SPU 2040

mk has expanded its portfolio in the field of automation: The new, accumulating pallet recirculation system SPU 2040 is integrated into the transfer systems range. It enables cost-effective and dynamic feeding, buffering, positioning and separating of workpiece pallets (WT).

When linking multiple workstations with different cycle or changeover times, the SPU 2040 clearly demonstrates its strengths: It allows a countercyclical operation with automatic recirculation of the WT. A flat top chain carries the workpieces on the WT to the plant. No additional manual or automated loading of pallets is necessary either.

The SPU 2040 is very compact in comparison to other systems on the market. This means not only low space requirements, but also good ergonomic properties for workers which place or remove the components on the system. The SPU 2040 is ideal for example in the automotive industry, to use in measuring systems or supply in welding units. Also in the plastics industry, for automotive suppliers or manufacturers of machine tools for grinding or turning machines, the SPU 2040 is highly suitable.

Due to the proven mk modular design and variable workpiece pallets, the SPU 2040 is adjustable so also offers flexibility. As single lane, dual lane or double lane solution it can be used for workpieces with different weight distribution. In addition to the modules like WT, transfer line, drive, return and frame, stoppers and separators as well as different protective device guards are available.

    ¿

The year 1966 witnessed it all: The Beatles coming together for the last time, the "Wembley goal" during the World Cup Final, and the premiere of Star Trek. And in Troisdorf, Hans-Josef Kitz was laying the foundation of his own mechanical engineering company.

As a young entrepreneur Hans-Josef Kitz started this first production facility over half a century ago in a garage that was attached to his parent’s house. One of the first designs by Hans-Josef Kitz included a celery washing machine for a farmer from the neighborhood. In the early years, as a contractor, he built machines and components for local companies. During this time, more and more of his own products were developed. And then in 1972 he developed his first standard conveyor. Even to this day, conveyor technology is a central pillar of mk’s business.

The wealth of ideas and power the company has is evident in its global position 50 years after its founding. The mk Technology Group, which was developed from Maschinenbau Kitz GmbH, is currently in the European and American markets. It is among the leading providers of mechanical modules, components and system solutions for factory automation – a branch with good prospects for the future due to the globalized effort to modernize production facilities and improve processes.
