High resolution micro-OLED and LCD displays feature in industrial NED modules

Westerham, United Kingdom, 10th October 2023. Display solutions and embedded systems provider, Review Display Systems (RDS) has announced the availability of a range of immersive Near Eye Display (NED) modules. A range of high-performance micro-OLED and micro-LCD displays featuring ultra-high resolution, high brightness, high contrast and low power consumption are available in NED module solutions.

Near eye display solutions are increasingly being used in wide range of industrial display systems such as inspection equipment, remote control systems, microscopes, electronic view finders, thermal imaging, medical diagnostic equipment and defence systems.

The current line-up of NED modules available support a range of micro-OLED and micro-LCD displays from 0.32-inch to 1.35-inch diagonal screen size, with pixel resolutions ranging from 800 x 600 pixels up to 3552 x 3552 pixels, and brightness specifications from 1800cd/m² up to 20,000cd/m². MIPI and RGB interfaces feature throughout.

The NED module solutions feature three different optical module types which include Birdbath, Pancake and Waveguide designs which support different applications and usage. These modules differ in how they project the image from the display source to the user’s eye.

    - Birdbath optics consist of a curved mirror that reflects light from the display into the user’s line of sight. This solution has the advantage of being low-cost and lightweight. Although birdbath optics are not the thinnest technology, it has excellent display performance and supports dioptre adjustment.

    - Pancake optics uses a flat mirror to fold the light path from the display to the user’s view, creating a thin and compact design. Pancake optics use very high resolution and bright displays, which can increase cost and power consumption.

    - Waveguide optics uses a thin transparent lightguide to transmit light from the display to the user’s eye through internal reflection. Although complex, Waveguide optics can achieve a very slim and lightweight design.

Justin Coleman, displays division manager said, “Although the consumer market for virtual and augmented reality is one of the fastest growing market segments for Near Eye Displays, the continued design and development of near eye display technology is finding many new and potential industrial applications. Near eye display systems offer several key advantages over traditional full-size displays including extremely compact size, high portability and very low power consumption.”

Near Eye Display optics, which are also often used in wearable equipment, create a high resolution, large field of view display image for one or both eyes. Near eye applications enable the human eye to perceive a virtual display image that appears much larger, at a greater distance, and in a highly compact physical environment.

Near Eye Display module solutions featuring micro-OLED and micro-LCD technology are now available from Review Display Systems.

Touch supplier AMT develops new Force Touch technology featuring piezo-electric elements

Display solutions and embedded systems provider, Review Display Systems (RDS) has announced the introduction of Safe Touch solutions from leading touch supplier AMT. Safe Touch products employ a newly developed AMT touch technology known as Force Touch.

False actuations and erroneous inputs on touch screen displays can present a serious problem for many applications employing touch-based graphical user interfaces. Harsh and wet operating environments can also introduce challenges for touch-based display systems and equipment.

Measuring actuation force - AMT’s Force Touch technology operates by integrating a piezo-electric element into the rear of the touch screen. By measuring the change in capacitance and voltage generated, the actuation force applied to the surface of the touch panel can be determined.

Direct touch inputs - this internal mechanism helps to prevent and protect against accidental touch inputs, electrical noise, and water contact. 22. Rugged & Reliable Touch Solutions for Transport Systems & In-Vehicle Applications
    3 May 2023

Support for UV and corrosion resistance with extended temperature specification

Westerham, United Kingdom, 2nd May 2023. Display solutions and embedded systems provider, Review Display Systems (RDS) has announced the availability and support for a wide range of PCap touch solutions for in-vehicle and transportation applications from leading global touch solution supplier AMT.

Transportation systems, vehicles and vessels are operated in a wide range of terrestrial, subterranean, atmospheric, and marine environments. The display and touch technologies used in these systems need to provide dependable operation under a wide range of operating environments and conditions.

Operating environments will present challenges that include temperature extremes, temperature change, magnetic and electrical noise, mechanical shock and vibration, ultraviolet radiation, and liquid/fluid substances. These factors all pose potential threats to reliable and consistent touchscreen operation.

    Temperature immunity

User displays employing touchscreen interfaces must provide reliable and stable operation under temperature extremes while also coping with rapid temperature variations. Touchscreen solution provider AMT develops and supplies PCap (projected capacitive) touch panels that are specified to an automotive standard operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, and a storage temperature range of -50°C to +90°C. Temperature change is tested with thermal cycling of -40°C (30 minutes) to +85°C (30 minutes), for 100 cycles.

    UV resistance

Transportation systems and infrastructure equipment are often operated extensively in outdoor environments, and as a necessity need to be able to withstand prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. A system that is unprotected and subjected to extended UV (ultraviolet) radiation can cause yellowing, hazing, and material degradation. AMT PCap touchscreen solutions have been successfully tested to strict industry standards including accelerated UV ageing and weathering standard ASTM G154 Cycle 1 - 1,000 hours, and environmental conditions standard MIL-STD-810H Pro 1 - 1,000 hours.

    Ambient light

Light reflection in high ambient light environments can impact display image clarity and visibility. Optical bonding is used to eliminate internal air gaps which reduces internal reflections and refraction effects. AMT also offers touch panels with a Low-Reflective (LR) design, to aid and assist improved image legibility in bright light conditions.

    EMC and noise immunity

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is important in all transportation applications. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations require all devices installed on aircraft to pass certification to DO-160 Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment. Employing suitable integration and firmware adjustment, AMT PCAP touch solutions can meet DO-160 Conducted RF Emission at 150KHz to 152MHz and Radiated RF Emission at 100MHz to 6000MHz test standards. AMT’s hardware and software design solutions enable excellent electromagnetic immunity for all transportation applications.

    Designed for purpose

Operator displays on public transport systems will often adopt dual-screen redundancy designs to mitigate against unexpected failure circumstances. A dual-screen operator display can incorporate two touchscreens using just one piece of integrated cover glass. The electric fields generated between the two projected capacitive (PCap) touch screens have the potential to interfere with each other. AMT have conducted many internal tests and used different signal frequencies to mitigate the problem of interference and ensure dual-screen applications can be successfully deployed.

    Leading touch solutions, local support

Developing and manufacturing touch screens and controllers, AMT is firmly established as a leading global touch solution supplier. AMT can design, develop, and supply an extensive range of PCap touchscreen solutions for diverse transport industry applications including trains, buses, electric vehicles, construction plant, commercial aircraft, utility vehicles and marine craft.

A wide range AMT PCap touch solutions, peripheral components and engineering support are now available from Review Display Systems.

  23. e-Paper displays feature low power Bi-stable display technology
    18 April 2023

Plastic-based display substrates enable rugged, durable solutions

Westerham, United Kingdom, 18th April 2023. Display solutions and embedded systems provider, Review Display Systems (RDS) has announced the availability of a range of monochrome and colour e-Paper displays from leading display manufacturer, Holitech Technology Corporation.

Review Display Systems can support and supply a wide range of monochrome and colour e-Paper display panels in sizes from 1.54-inch to 31.2-inch. Segment and dot matrix types, with a range of different resolutions are available.

Ideal for low-power applications, e-Paper displays use a bi-stable display technology where no applied power is required to maintain a display image. The display image will be retained when all power sources are removed. An e-Paper display will only consume power when the display image is being changed or updated.

The internal structure of the display includes a layer of transparent electrophoretic liquid which contains microcapsules or micro-cups. Each micro-cup contains white particles with negative charge, yellow particles with negative charge, magenta particles with positive charge, and cyan particles with positive charge. When different voltages are applied, the different colour particles migrate to the top layer and become visible to the observer. All the colour pigments are in each individual pixel, this helps to eliminate light attenuation, and ensures paper-like readability in all lighting conditions and viewing angles. Colour mixing techniques can enable a colour spectrum of 32K colours.

Bi-stable e-Paper displays can help to significantly reduce system power consumption and extend the lifetime of battery-power products. Substantial power savings can be achieved when using an e-Paper display when compared with an equivalent-sized TFT LCD display.

Holitech e-Paper displays operate as reflective mode displays, therefore in bright, ambient light environments, the display image will appear brighter with enhanced levels of colour saturation. Users of e-Paper displays are not subject to the same eye fatigue that can be experienced when using TFT LCDs for a prolonged period of time. The need for an LED backlight is eliminated, which also reduces power consumption when compared to transmissive TFT LCD displays.

e-Paper displays are comprised of an ink layer laminated to a flexible, plastic film substrate. Plastic-based e-Paper displays enable the completed end product to be substantially lighter and thinner than products using glass-based display substrates. The use of plastic-based e-Paper displays can also provide a more rugged and durable display solution while glass-based TFTs can be susceptible to extreme shock, vibration, and physical impacts.

Holitech e-Paper displays are suitable for use in a wide range of innovative and unique applications including battery-powered devices, handheld equipment, wearables, medical systems, retail pricing displays, IoT devices and many more.

The Holitech e-Paper display product range is now available from Review Display Systems. For further information, design assistance and technical support contact Review Display Systems at info@review-displays.co.uk or call 01959 563345.
