Binary alloys of copper and tin are called bronzes and can contain up to 12% tin. Tin content ranges from 4% to 8% in wrought materials or higher if the alloy is used as cast. Alloys containing the higher tin level are particularly suitable for severe operating conditions.

Due to their excellent resistance to corrosion and bio-fouling, copper alloys are widely used in many marine applications including piping systems, heat exchangers, storage tanks, ships hulls and cladding for offshore structures. Aluminium bronzes have high strength combined with good resistance to oxidisation and corrosion particularly in marine environments. They are hard, strong constructional materials that are very resistant to wear. Additional nickel improves corrosion resistance and strength. Additional silicon improves wear resistance and strength.

Copper nickel offers excellent corrosion resistance, especially in marine salt water environments. The main, wrought copper-nickel alloys chosen for sea water service contain 10 or 30 percent nickel. They also have important additions of iron and manganese which are necessary to maintain good corrosion resistance.
