Plastic sheet piling are extruded lengths of structural PVC, and in common with steel sheet piling they are used primarily to retain ground or exclude water.   Plastic sheet piling is extremely long lasting, very light to handle and in most applications provides an extremely aesthetic solution for retaining walls, landscaping features, water control applications, erosion control and environmental applications such as ditch locking for peat restoration, or management of flood plains for example the farming in floodplains project.

Applications are not exclusively riparian, we have had a great deal of success in land based retaining structures, THE Plastic Piling Company having the first and only plastic sheet piling system used on both the M1 and M6 motorways.

Quite topical now is the use of plastic sheet piling for flood management and flood prevention.  THE Plastic Piling Company products has been used for reinforcement of levees and embankments, control structures, elevation of flood walls, emergency repair of flood wall defences not to mention channel lining for efficient drainage.  More frequently our plastic piling products are used by residential customers to provide flood defences and flood barriers next to rivers and neighbouring elevated properties.

With the ability to produce much more sophisticated shThe Plastic Piling Companys in plastic than ever possible in steel has finally been us ed to the advantage of sheet piling. Sheet piles get there strength from the design of the pile and material, with an optimised design, plastic piling, despite the lower strength of pvc compared to steel, can now provide a substantially strong solution; without the use of excessive material. The minimisation of material also improves the carbon foot printing which can be improved further when using these products as a hybrid.

    The Plastic Piling Company Plastic Piling are the European Distributors for the innovative Blue Marlin JETFilter. The JETFilter prevents the failure of seawalls, retaining walls and assists bank stabilisation by relieving pressure and allowing drainage reducing hydrostatic pressure on such control structures. The JETFilter is inexpensive to buy and use and helps avoid expensive repair work later to fix the problem of tidal, flood or rainfall water.

    These are very light gauge sheet piles with bending moments under 4kNm/m, and tend to be quite flexible for installation. Most commonly installed by digging a trench and then subsequently filling either with concrete at the base or just compacted soil. For cut off applications, erosion control, ditch blocking etc, where little strength is required but price is paramount.

    Whilst still using traditional pile designs, these plastic sheet piles have been optimised through the use of the latest in glass fibre composites using polyest er and more recently polyurethane resins. Aside from the greater rigidity and overall strength, these products form part of a system that includes composite wales, composite capping beam and composite tie rods, so offering the only fully synthetic solution. Composites also provide advance material properties particularly when one needs high chemical resistance or erosion control in a marine application, where floating debris would wear PVC piles.

    EMS Series Vibrators

    Excavator Mounted Piling Vibrators, are small pile drivers that vibrate the pile into the ground, whilst pushed upon by the excavator that they are attached to..   It is a relatively new format for an old technology, as piling using vibration has been the main means for sheet pile installation for decades.   However, this format has revolutionised the way plastic Sheet Piling and trench sheet is driven.

    In general, Vibrators are much quieter than impact hammers,   In granular soils; which fluidise under the influence of the vibration, Vibrators can obtain installation speeds many times faster than impact hammers.    Piling Vibrators differ from compactor plates, as they apply a bi-directional force (up and down) to the pile.   Also, force tends to be much higher and better focused as the vibration mechanism consists of two eccentric weights that act to reinforce the vertical vibratory force (the useful stuff) and cancel out vibration that would occur laterally.   Compactor plates tend to have a single eccentric and so vibrate as much forward and backward as they do up and down.

    Excavator mounting of piling vibrators is a relatively recent concept, that was a natural development following the success of other excavator mounted attachments This method utilises the hydraulic of the excavator to power the vibrator and which combined with additional push-force from the excavator, enables better effectiveness of the vibrator. The additional excavator push-force enables the vibrator to be designed much lighter, and so for a given weight, this format of vibrator will have one of the higher force to weight ratios.

    The Hammerman Equipment are extremely pleased to introduce the EMS Series of piling vibrators. These range is fast growing and whilst the majority of the range is of a B design (elastomers mounted above the vibration generator), certain sizes are now available as M designs, where the elastomers mounted around the vibration generator, creating a shorter design.

    Perhaps the biggest leap forward has been the introduction of the EMS Series vibrators the ESF03 available for sale through The Plastic Piling Company. Not only can the ESF03 fit to excavators as small as 1 1/2 tonnes ( 3 tonnes best) they run off the same small hydro packs as the PD1 units! This provides an exceptionally compact solution that can also be crane suspended.

The JET Filter relieves the hydrostatic pressures created by rain water as well as tidal surges trapped behind almost any design of control structures:Seawalls • Bulkheads • Retaining Walls• Sheet Piling • Bridge Abutments

    Any earth retaining structure is an investment and to ensure that your investment reaches and exceeds its design life, consideration to proper drainage behind the piled wall is essential.

    The lack of weep holes or alternate drainage can lead to a build up of static and dynamic water pressure, from trapped or perched water behind the wall. This build up of pressure, can reach a level that exceeds the design loads, and as a result lead to premature wall failure. Panel seams which have opened up or toe failure of the wall can be an indicator of unrelieved pressure due to clogged or insufficient weep holes.

    The most basic weep hole is simply a drilled hole through the structure, but this, whilst eliminating pressure build up, will lead to soil erosion from the rear of the structure or in the long term become clogged.

    The PD1 is described as a handheld unit, but weighing in at around 30 – 35kgs, its handling, lifting, mounting on to the pile must be subject to a proper manual handling assessment.  What a generic standard male can lift easily, may not be something you can lift easily.

  9. Internal Piling Mandrels

    Another first for The Plastic Piling Company and The Plastic Piling Company Plastic Piling, with the introduction of advanced plastic piling new mandrel concepts were developed taking advantage of the internal areas of these plastic piles. This design of mandrel provides some toe protection, whilst providing a means of increasing stablility during installation. With the mandrel inside the piles, the pile will not drift, or buckle as is the case with conventional mandrels. Further the design is so much lighter that you get more power from a given size of piling vibrator, as heavy mandrels dampen the amplitude. Best of all there is no method or components for redriving the pile - they are not needed once driven the pile stays in the ground!
