For us, as an industrial silencer manufacturer, we need to know about flowrate, up-stream pressure, up-stream temperature, connection size and type, and noise level required. With this information, we can begin to provide you with a positive, high performing solution.

Is there a distinction between sound absorption and soundproofing?

Is there a distinction between sound absorption and soundproofing?

The problem with working in a noisy environment is the physical toll it can take. The noise can cause a lot of health concerns. Some are temporary, while others are permanent. To prevent any of this from affecting people on your site, it is necessary to invest in the right tools. It could be a discharge silencer or something similar. As a company that has been designing and supplying these utensils for years, we can help if you are having trouble.

In our line of work, two phrases frequently show up. These are sound absorption and soundproofing. Not surprisingly, people can easily confuse them.

Anyone that has had a problem with noise might go looking for a soundproofing solution. Hospitals, halls, theatres, restaurants, schools, and businesses can all struggle to manage sound. For some, it will be the noise inside the room they have to minimise. With others, the noise will be coming from somewhere else. As a result, it will need to be blocked from entering or leaving a space.

Soundproofing is typically a general term. It is one that encircles every interior acoustic solution. But in reality it is one of two approaches to control sound in an environment. It is specifically about the action of blocking sound waves. As for sound absorption, you use materials like silencers to absorb it inside a space. The two are very different. We will explain why here.

Sound absorption

Managing noise via absorption can be an efficient method of lowering the noise and echo in an area. Products to achieve this often feature soft materials that are capable of soaking sound waves up when they hit them.

You may be dealing with immoderate sound in an office. Or, there can be a disturbing echo in your facility. It could even be a classroom with bad speech intelligibility. But, some carefully positioned sound absorbing utensils can help you overcome the noise issues.

The term ‘sound absorption’ is one that you hear less frequently. However, it is probably the method that is used most of the time.

Soundproofing

Here you use sound insulation materials to prevent noise from exiting and entering rooms. An alternate name would be sound blocking. Mainly, these materials are heavy and solid. The action of physically stopping sound waves demands that your solutions be dense enough for reflection. You also need to keep the sounds in one space.

When someone has issues with noise, soundproofing isn’t always the way to go. Saying this, there are certainly circumstances where it is an appropriate method. Radio/TV studios, cinemas, and theatres need it because it stops sounds from travelling. It can limit them to locations where people expect the noise.

There you have it, a close look at sound absorption and soundproofing. One method absorbs sound whereas the other blocks it. It is really that simple.
