Founded in 1979, Hardmetal Engineering is one of the leading engineering companies in Europe working specifically with hard metals. We specialise in producing a wide range of wear products, piece parts and punch die sets in a variety of different materials for a broad spectrum of industries. We are experts in close tolerance working (normally within 4 microns) on Kovar, Tantalum, Titanium, Tool Steel, Brass, Copper Tungsten, Tungsten Carbide and sintered materials.

Tungsten Carbide

We use Tungsten Carbide everyday in a variety of products, for use in a number of different applications throughout many industries. It is an incredibly versatile and useful material due to its unique properties which are outlined on our website: When evaluating or finding equivalents of Tungsten Carbide grades the important criteria is to specify two of three factors. Binder content, hardness or grain size.

Inconel

Inconel

There are many different varieties of Inconel’s, each has a different composition, but all are generally nickel, with chromium as the second element. Inconel alloys are corrosion and oxidation resistant and therefore are well suited for usage in extreme environments. When heat is applied to Inconel it forms a protective oxide layer through passivation. Inconel retains strength over a wide temperature range, an advantage for high temperature applications. Depending on the alloy, Inconel's high temperature strength is established either by solid solution strengthening or precipitation strengthening.

Super Duplex

Super Duplex

Super duplex is a stainless steel with a dual phase microstructure, it is made up of roughly 50% of austenitic and 50% of ferrite. Super Duplex is highly resistant to a variety of corrosion types, including chloride stress, cracking or fatigue. This strong material has a low coefficient expansion and high thermal conductivity, and its levels of resistance to corrosion make it an ideal material to use for a variety of applications. Super Duplex provides good workability properties and ease of welding.

Tantalum

Tantalum

Tantalum is a rare, shiny, grey, dense metal. Its highly ductile properties mean it can be turned into wire. Its chemical properties are very similar to those of niobium. Tantalum has a high level of corrosion resistance due to the formation of an oxide film. It has high conductivity for both heat and electricity. The metal has a melting point of 2998 degrees Celsius, exceeded only by Tungsten and Rhenium. Tantalum is one of the twelve refractory metals (metals with very high resistance to heat, corrosion and wear), although only five are frequently used, including; Tungsten, Molybdenum, Rhenium and Niobium.

Titanium

Titanium

Titanium was discovered in Cornwall, where Hardmetal Engineering based, by William Gregor in 1791, it was named after the Greek Titans by Martin Heinrich Klaproth. It is the 9th most common element in the Earth crust. Pure Titanium is a silvery-white, glossy, hard, light metal. Two of Titanium most useful properties are high corrosion resistance and the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal. Unalloyed Titanium is as strong as some steels, but 45% lighter. It is ductile and becomes malleable when heated. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in concentrated acids.

Tool Steel

Our tool steel can be hardened, tempered or coated to suite any manufacturing requirement.We use superior quality tool steels that have excellent wear and abrasive resistance properties. Tool steel refers to a variety of carbon and alloy steels that are particularly well-suited to be made into tools. Their suitability comes from their distinctive hardness, resistance to abrasion, their ability to hold a cutting edge, and/or their resistance to deformation at elevated temperatures (red-hardness). Tool steel is generally used in a heat-treated state.

Spark and Wire Erosion

Spark and Wire Erosion are two different Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) processes, which we use on a daily basis. Electrical discharge machining is a machining technique principally used for hard metals and metals that are difficult to machine using traditional methods. EDM normally operates with materials that are electrically conductive. EDM is designed to erode (remove) intricate depressions or contours from pre-hardened steel negating the requirement for heat treatment to soften and re-harden the steel. We use this method on many different types of metals and alloys, such as Titanium, Tool Steel, Tungsten Carbide, Tantalum, Super Duplex and Inconel.

Here at Hardmetal Engineering we specialise in machining Tungsten, Nickel and Chrome Carbide products. We manufacture various Tungsten Carbide components designed for the oil industry, including;

Our experience within this industry has taught us how valuable product life is. We would usually make suggestions from a variety of available Carbides, the most suitable material for harsh working environments such as subsea and/or continual wearing.

We have over 30 years of experience of subcontract machining and are accredited to ISO 9001:2008. We are a UK based precision engineering company who specialise in manufacturing compact bespoke parts machined from hard metals. Our machinery, tooling and equipment is geared up to working with some of the hardest materials on the planet, and our extensive expertise in this area are second to none. We are conscious that considerable research, development and testing are required on any renewable product application and we are able to provide support from conception and product design to prototype parts, small batches up to larger production runs.

There are many different applications within the Oil and Gas Industry from exploration to drilling and pumping where hard and exotic materials are commonly used. This is partly due to the hostile subsea environment that they operate in and the length of time the components are required to perform without any issues, but also because of the accuracy and tolerance that can be achieved and maintained in hard materials. Many of the components used in these applications are made from Tungsten Carbide due to its superior strength and stiffness, excellent reliability and abrasive wear resistance. Silicon Carbide is also common in certain applications.

Our products and bespoke designs have a variety of applications within the Nuclear Energy Sector, both Nuclear Fission and Fusion extensively use hard and exotic materials that we are experts in machining. This is partly due to the hostile temperatures that they operate in and the length of time the components are required to perform without any issues, but also because of the accuracy and tolerance that can be achieved and maintained in hard materials. Many components, such as radiation shields, used in these processes are made from Inconel due to its superior heat resistance strength and stiffness, excellent reliability and abrasive wear resistance.

Your design will be constructed from the finest grade hard metals, to ensure performance in their chosen application. The Renewable Energy Sector extensively uses hard and exotic, this is partly due to the environment that they operate in and the length of time the components are required to perform without any issues, but also because of the accuracy and tolerance that can be achieved and maintained in hard materials. Many components, such as wave energy transmission, used in these processes are made from Tungsten Carbide due to its superior resistance strength and stiffness, excellent reliability and abrasive wear resistance.

Made in a combination of hardened steel and various carbides depending on the specific application. Our punches and Dies are machined to exact tolerances and polished surface finish requirements. They are generally used in metal shear applications and compression of pre-sinted carbon and ceramic powders. There are various types of Dies and Plugs that we manufacture, including:

Nozzles and Seaming Rollers

Nozzles and Seaming Rollers for the Canning, Packaging, and Paper Industries.

Our nozzles are made in Tungsten Carbide and Steel, with varying bore sizes and profiles. They are used in several industries, mainly for spraying internal surfaces of metal food canisters. The nozzles have to perform consistently over long periods spraying abrasive liquids. The rollers cut and roll the lips of tin cans; the nozzles are used to finely distribute glue for sealing cans and for packaging and paper industries. Both are manufactured from extremely hardwearing materials, such as Tungsten Carbide to ensure a good lifetime.

Moulding Dies

Moulds can be designed from a component 'blueprint' or finished drawing to fine tolerances and polished surface finishes.
Moulds are typically fabricated from hardened steel, aluminium, and/or beryllium-free-copper alloy, depending on the customers’ requirements. The selection process is normally dictated by batch size and cost. Typically, steel moulds cost more to fabricate, but their longer life expectancy will compensate for the higher initial cost over a higher number of parts made before needing to be replaced.

Made, re-sharpened and re-furbished in carbide and steel for paper and metal cutting applications Hardmetal provide a large range of businesses with industrial paper cutting blades. Standard carbon steel blades have poor wear resistance, which is costly to customers. They are penalised in terms of down time, replacing them and the replacement cost itself, our customers benefit from hard wearing metals which are fabricated especially to provide superior wear life expectancy.

Hardmetal manufacture a range of manifolds and valve bodies for a variety of pneumatic and hydraulic applications. We primarily serve the Automotive, Marine, Oil and Gas, Aerospace, Cooling and Heating sectors, although our knowledge and capabilities can be applied to a host of different industries. We generally working with Aluminium, Brass, Stainless Steel and Plastic, our focus is on cost reduction through lean manufacturing. We use state of the art machines like the AgieCharmilles 30P Wire Cut EDM mill-turn to produce high quality products quickly.

Wire Drawing Dies

Wire drawing dies and floating plugs

Complex and standard shape dies and plugs for the steel and plastic industries. We can machine them to very fine finishes and tight tolerances. At Hardmetal Engineering we manufacture adjustable wire drawing dies; they are produced with highly-polished, specially-shaped holes through which wire is drawn to reduce its diameter.

When selecting wire drawing dies, wire material and drawing parameters are important specifications to consider. For hot drawing, cast-steel dies are used, whereas for steel wire drawing, a Tungsten Carbide die is used.

The brochure update includes some more information on our area of expertise; precision engineering and an interesting article on Inconel used in a different industry. However the main focus for this version of the brochure are the new pages on spark and wire erosion and an updated capacity list.

The main new improvements centre around the purchase of our two new wire cut EDM machines. The AgieCharmilles 20P and 30P will be installed in the first week of September, marking the completion of our summer investment program. The Wire Cut 20P and 30P are 30-50% faster than our current machines and they allow us to cut larger work pieces, at steeper angles and to closer tolerances, making our prices even more competitive and reducing lead times.
