A beautifully engineered, lightweight building alternative to glazing.
Made of a copolymer extruded into thin films, this durable material can achieve light transmission up to 95%.
At 1% the weight of glass, you can watch the bottom line of your project shrink as we reduce the size of steel and foundations required to support this ‘floating’ system.
Systems range from cable supported single layer to insulated multi foil cushions. Cushions range from two to four layers – depending on the required insulation.
ETFE cushions are filled with air using an Air Handling Unit (AHU). This unit’s job is to maintain the pressure in the system between 200-300 pa depending on the size of the roof. The AHU is very efficient consuming power equivalent to a 100w light bulb.
Widths of panels are up to 3.5m, while lengths are infinite.
Economically priced dynamic covered spaces.
Architects and designers are using ETFE single layer systems to create dynamic all weatherproof spaces. Because ETFE is lightweight, there is great cost savings to be had by reducing the size of the supporting framework and foundations.
The demand for economically priced materials to cover walkways is increasing, making ETFE very popular. Typical installations for single foil systems include bridging existing building, such as schools, to create dry space and covering walkways in shopping centres and transportation hubs.
With this system, there is no requirement for an air handling unit. Because the actual material has a slippery surface, dirt and algae do not stick to it, making maintenance minimal.
As ETFE is flexible, curvature can be introduced in the design of your covered space to create dramatic focal points that are functional.
A smart system that is both practical and beautiful.
It’s a particularly sunny day, the glare is noticeable and your space is heating up. If your roof was glazed, you would have to accept and work around it. With Intelligent Printing, you get to control how much natural sunlight you allow into your space.
So how does it work?
Intelligent Printing features at least three layers. The top and middle layers are printed or fritted with an offset pattern (usually squares). By altering the air pressure in the individual chambers within the cushion, layers are brought close together providing maximum fritted coverage, or separated to maximise natural light transmission.
This system can be automated by the addition of light sensors installed on the roof of the building. This allows the end user to set light levels that are maintained by the smart air handling unit and automatically adjusted. As the position of the sun moves through the seasons, an Intelligent Printing ETFE system can react and respond – that’s why we call it intelligent.
Better acoustics made easy.
Here comes the rain again… An ETFE cushion filled with air looks and acts a bit like a drum. When rain falls on the outer surface of the cushion, a drumming sound can occur. In most instances, this sound is not an issue, but for some applications (such as over a library or a quiet work space), this may be a key design consideration. Our solution is the addition of Architen Acoustic.
Architen Acoustic is a rain suppression mesh installed over the surface of the ETFE cushions. The fabric stops reverberation and it also absorbs some of the rain falling from the sky. The result is a ‘drum free’ quieter space beneath the ETFE system.
The addition of the rain suppression mesh reduces sound by up to 10 decibels.
Fresh air for comfort.
No one likes a stuffy hot space. One way to introduce fresh air and release heat is through Architen Ventilation. Architen Ventilation is an engineered system comprising hinged ETFE panels incorporated in the design of the ETFE system.
Actuated panels can be manually opened or sensors can be connected to the Building Management System to automatically open when heat levels get too high.
As an option, opening panels can contribute to the building’s fire strategy. In this case, this system is triggered by the fire alarm/temperature setting, which can open the hinged panels for smoke ventilation.
Updates to your smartphone or tablet.
You’re on holiday at the beach. Back home the weather forecast predicts heavy wind with rain rapidly turning to snow. No worries, everything is in control.
Installed sensors for wind and snow allow your ETFE system to ‘think on its feet’. It reacts and responds by adjusting pressure in the system. This allows it to resist sudden environmental changes such as wind and snow.
Architen Control offers remote monitoring with text/email updates detailing how your system is performing in various weather conditions.

Long gone are the days when fabric structures were only used in large unheated spaces. Thermal is a high performance system capable of meeting the strict thermal values of an insulated conventional roof, while retaining the virtues of sculptural form and clear span spaces.
The technology behind Thermal is the use of multi-layers, ‘sandwiched’ together forming the external envelope for virtually any building. The layers include: an outer membrane identical to a normal tensile roof; an insulated multi-foil membrane suspended beneath the outer layer; and a lightweight inner lining giving the underside of the system a smooth elegant appearance.
By overcoming the thermal limitations usually associated with fabric, Thermal becomes viable as a building material in areas previously ‘off-limits’ to membrane construction. Thermal meets Part L and can achieve U-Values up to 0.18.

Perfect for projects where the acoustic performance of a space is important.
Ecoustic is a high density synthetic soundproofing membrane. This fire rated fabric provides the opportunity for lightweight tensile fabric structures to incorporate an acoustic lining which follows the curvature of the structure.
The ability to include an Ecoustic liner enhances the acoustic performance for demountable structures erected for festivals or temporary events.
In addition to Ecoustic fabric, a rain suppression layer can be added over the top of any existing tensile structure. This layer dampens the sound caused by rain. Both options are perfect for permanent, temporary and demountable tensile structures.
The size of modular panels can vary to suite installation methods and the weight of panels while the joining and sealing process allows for individual alignment without affecting the acoustic sealing or finish.
For tensile fabric structures where energy reduction is important.
LowE fabric is treated with a calibrated application of a metallic aluminium liquid, having it work a bit like a thermos.
In the winter, heat rises to the tensile fabric roof and then is reflected down. In the summer, it effectively increases the efficiency of the air conditioning by reflecting the cool air back into the space.
On the outside, while the fabric heats up on a sunny day, solar gain does not penetrate the fabric – keeping the space below the canopy cool.
LowE works for both permanent or temporary structures (double skin or triple skin). LowE can be calibrate to conserve a level of fabric translucency, thereby maintaining natural light into the building.
The E in LowE stands for emissivity. This relates to the ability of its surface to emit energy by radiation.
